1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
Ellie O’Neill
2. I think this still is very conventional of the
thriller genre as it introduces uncertainty to
the audience which is common for a thriller.
We can see that it is a body being dragged but
we can not see the face therefore by keeping
the identity of the victim unknown, this adds
mystery to the opening sequence which is
seen a lot in thriller films. Also, the lighting has
been changed slightly so that it is less bright.
This creates a grey tone to the lighting which
makes the shot look negative which is also a
common thriller convention.
3. This still shows an over the shoulder shot of
the killer wearing a hooded coat. This has
purposely been done to make sure the identity
is unknown to the audience for the same
reasons as the above still. This could be seen
as developing the convention of mystery in a
thriller as we have gone to the extent of
making the killer wear a hood so that the
audience really have no idea who the killer is.
4. This still of the twitter page could be seen as
challenging the conventions of a thriller as this
introduces a social network that focuses on a
teenage audience. The thriller genre usually
attracts a more mature, older audience as it is
a serious, in-depth genre. We wanted to make
it clear to the audience what the killer was
doing and who his victims are and by including
this shot, the audience can see that the target
victims are teenage girls. By including this shot
we have also widened the target audience as
this may attract a teenage audience which is
unconventional of the thriller genre.
5. The close up of the mouth in this still is very
conventional of the thriller genre as it makes
the audience feel uneasy. We made this shot a
close up purposely as throughout the opening
sequence they have been seeing the killer
from a distance and he has been very much
hidden but then we come to this completely
different shot which brings the audience more
or less face to face with the killer however we
have still managed to keep his identity
unknown which is commonly seen in thriller
films.
6. This still of the close up of the girl's eyes
reveals a clue to the audience. This is also
conventional of the thriller genre as vague
clues are given throughout thriller films to
slightly add to the audience's knowledge of
what is going on and in this case, who is
involved in the crime that is evidently shown in
the opening sequence.
7. It is conventional of a thriller to relate to the
action or horror genre. In this case, it could be
seen as relating to horror as the still shows the
killer washing blood off his hands which is gory
and gore is a key convention of horror. This
builds tension ready to shock the audience in a
highly similar way to what a thriller does.
