2. Types of Narrative Structure
Open Vs. Closed
• Open: There are unanswered questions or loose ends
which need to be tied up at the end of the narrative
• Closed: There are no unanswered questions or loose
ends. The narrative is complete.
3. Single Strand Vs. Multi Strand
eg: Disney Films
• Single Strand: There is one narrative thread that runs
throughout the whole narrative.
• Multi Strand: There are different narratives threads
which sometimes coverage in the narrative eg. Soap
Operas
- Documentaries are mainly single strand
4. Linear Vs. Non-Linear
• Linear: The events in a narrative follow chronological
order (order of time)
• Non-Linear: Doesn’t follow chronological order. They
use flashbacks and flash forwards (often used)
- Finding Nemo is a closed, single strand, linear
narrative
