AUTHOR: FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
From ‘In the Cause of Architecture’, Frank Lloyd Wright discusses architectural integrity – ideals
derived from themes of individualism and simplicity outlined in his propositions of design.
Simplicity is a means in revealing integrity behind the design. Simplicity calls for the elimination of
redundant elements, and is often expressed in the absence of decoration, should itonly be used to justify the
aesthetics and form. Ornamentation is justified if its usage is understood thoroughly alongside the design
scheme as a whole. Upon discussing organic integrity, Wright stresses the importance of nature, citing it as
the purest form of inspiration. Without overcomplication, schemes should be conceived as organic entities
without worrying about the aesthetics of the end product, for it would be naturally dignified if executed with
careful proportion. Wright also celebrates democracy and believes that every individual has the right of
expression to his environment. Contrary to this, a fair majority however still seek comfortin the superficiality of
designwith no respectto nature orpersonalvalues, contributing no significance in upholding integrity indesign.
Hence, the nature of individuality is argumentative and perceived as a radical challenge towards the
conventional scheme. Wright is a firm advocate that individual characteristics articulate design, and dictates
that architects have a responsibility in creating architecture which is true to himself and which reflects his
principles.
In conclusion, I felt that Wright’s principles are paradoxical against his intentions of propagating
individualexpression;individualismis derivedfrompersonalvalues which is subjective, butare yetconstrained
by the framework of Wright’s theories. Perhaps Wright’s rationale serve as valuable guidelines, for example,
using nature to inform the design is widely encouraged and practiced in our architecture curriculum till today.
Nevertheless, Wright’s works and propositions remain exemplary in the pursuit of upholding architectural
integrity as he challenges our definition ofarchitecture instead ofconforming to the societal archetypical trend
of design.
