AUTHOR: JACQUES DERRIDA, EVA MEYER
In the interview ‘Architecture where Desire Can Live’ by Eva Meyer, Jacques Derrida, the French
philosopher behind the coining of Deconstruction, discusses architectural thinking and fundamental
architectural relationships with time.
Derrida dictates architecture should always be one with thought, and not as a separate entity nor a
metaphor. Theory and practice should never be separated as it‘degrades’ architecture to a mere technique of
representation of the thinking process, which would diminish the possibility of revealing the true potential of
architecture. Here, Derrida makes reference to the labyrinth, which is defined as a maze with an ultimate goal
at its end; hence, the end gives the path its significance and purpose. As he dictates, the way is never a
method. I agree with his statement as I personally feel that the way is infinite and is always susceptible to
change as long as an individual keeps thinking and exploring. This can be justified in line with Derrida citing
‘thinking is always a way’. However, the language ofthe way is specific, evolutionary and changes throughout
time. This is evidenced in architectural history by how architecture has evolved with time through stylistic
changes, butnevertheless, the dynamic language will always return to the fundamental elements ofhabitality.
Derrida also highlights the existential establishmentof place, in which he questions the origins ofthe
place. I am in mutual agreement with this statement as I believe that there is no definitive label on when a
place was officially recognized as a place, or how a place comes about. This is in line with another key point
which I find interesting – the mention of a new relationships between human and architecture. Derrida seeks
to highlightthat the style may be ephemeral, butthe true essence ofarchitecture can be embodied perpetually
despite the evolution ofform. I strongly agree with this as I can relate this statement to the study ofIse Jingu,
a Japanese shrine in the Mie Prefecture which is rebuilt every twenty years. The original design is retained
against the eroding effects of time. In a way, originality is preserved despite the changing of its vessel. The
body evolves but the soul transcends time.
In conclusion, the art of architecture will forever remain labyrinthine. In my opinion, its nature is
interpretative, and the way to understanding architecture is evidently complex and comparative to solving an
enigma of a lifetime, requiring patience and an open outlook to accommodate diversity in perspectives.
