AUTHOR: DIANA ARGREST & MARIO GANDERLSONAS
In this book, the authors recognize between the present interest in communication theory and
semiotics. Semiotics is the exploration of the distinctive frameworks of linguistic signs and the rules
representing their conduct inside the framework. In contrast, communication theory manages the
utilization and impacts of sign to be included as the transmission of a message
At first, the authors introduce ideology that concerned with theory in a strict sense, as opposed to the
adaptive ‘theory’. Ideology in a way alludes to reality, but it only offers an illusion of this reality. In
restriction of ideology, they also propose a theory of architecture, which is necessarily placed outside
ideology that explains the relationship between society and the built environment. As they
mentioned, it had been a continuous struggle between the theory and ideology where ideology major
focus on preservation of existing social system and their institution. In their opinion, many ‘ semiotic
theories of architecture’ actually provide essential tools for the production of knowledge on
architecture. When semiotic becomes an important tools for architecture theory, it would be used to
clarify between the notion of communication and signification.
The authors view semiotics such an approach to extend the comprehension of the production of
significance in architecture. They also recommended semiotics ought to be imagined as a feature of
a bigger project, and not just as an unmediated importation of concepts from an outside discipline.
In this manner, semiotics may be valuable as a weapon against ideology, which permits the
propagation of the economic and political business as usual. The authors hope that critical theory,
gave to the generation of information on architecture and lo the scrutinize of ideology, will supplant
this adaptive norm. Taking everything into account, I learnt the route on the most proficient method
to accentuate the principle issues and applying the linguistic analogy to engineering in the future.
