AUTHOR:JACQUES DERRIDA INTERVIEWED BY EVA MEYER
Through the article related with the interview between Jacques Derrida and Eva Meyer, they had
mentioned the distinction issues regarding to the terms in the relation of architecture and
deconstruction. Jacques Derrida, the French philosopherwas stated that the concept of deconstruction
have resembles itself as an architectural metaphor which influenced by the history philosophy from
Platonic to Heidegger. The philosophy had examines on how it built to provide the specific angle of
vision which could support the building. However, it is not clarified as the essence of deconstruction,
said by Jacques Derrida as it is not simply which indicate the technique of reversed construction. He
had mentioned that architecture is treated as pieces of written work which reflect a certain way of living
that act as a language to communicate with the meanings.
I am totally agreed with his statement on clearly express the essence of designing an architecture by
understanding on how it approach the design to the selected site thus obtain the particular significance
through the design philosophy. Therefore, the architecture itself could plays an important role on
transporting important message by an architect. For example, the Petaling Street is built by the
Chinese community that bring the essence of Chinatown through the typical Chinese shop houses.
Even today, those shop houses are kept well to be part of the attractions in urban city, Kuala Lumpur
to maintain the history and cultural sense of the community which imitating their lifestyles.
To be concluded that “architecture must create places where desire can recognise itself and where it
can live forever” said by Jacques Derrida had emphasize the important spirit for an architecture based
on the theory of deconstruction that could situated naturally to the place from where they come from.
This could encourage the world architects to design their building to stand out itself without only kept
in its visible form of the place but develops the significance itself. And I do really felt that designing an
architecture without the spirit of itself could not be a good architecture that bring the essence and
meaning of a place.
