EVENT: BIS Finance Academy – Public Spending Masterclass
This is an intensive two-hour masterclass, aimed primarily at policy colleagues. It
aims to provide a bite-size overview of key public spending and VFM concepts,
needed to make effective policy.
The purpose of the class is to take policy colleagues through the basics of finance,
including DEL/AME, budgeting and forecasting, internal processes, and business
case development. The masterclass may also be useful as part of the induction for
new finance staff

EVENT: BIS Finance Academy – Demystifying devolution: from Barnett
to Wales
• Mike Barbier from the BIS UK Devolution Team will introduce the basics, outlining the different
devolution settlements and how to work with the Devolved Administrations and Territorial Offices;
• The HMT Devolution Team will give a practical demonstration of the financial side, including the
risks from not considering devolution early in the process.
So if you’ve always wondered about the Barnett Formula, or want to learn about the recent Financial
Framework with Scotland, then come along to this event.

BIS Finance Academy – Finance Capability Development Programme
As part of the development of a Finance 2020 target operating model, we want to support organisations
to embed a Finance Business Partner model where appropriate. To do this we have identified the
business need for a structured programme of learning and development for staff within finance, budget
management or business partnering roles.
Course objectives
• Development or augmentation of core management and business partnering skills.
• Building effective relationships with customers and senior stakeholders.
• Communicating specialist knowledge in an accessible way.
• Taking a proactive approach to decision support and problem solving.
We have 36 places available and allocation will be made on a first come first served basis with the
opportunity to state a preference on location and cohorts depending on dates listed for the nine-
month programme.
Closing Date: 6th May
Initial attendance required: w/c 13 June or w/c 20 June
Cost: The cost of the programme is £2,320 per person which will need to be funded by individual
departments

NEW Dealing with Ethical Issues
The module on Dealing with Ethical Issues is taken from Ethical Issues for Accountants by David
Molyneaux. It brings together six true-to-life ethical dilemmas faced by chartered accountants, in
practice or business. Its goal is to bring ethical problems to life and to encourage debate and
understanding.

NEW LSE Public Events
The LSE Summer events programme is now online, with highlights including lectures by Sophie
Walker, Frances O'Grady, Sir David Chipperfield, Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw and Jeremy Corbyn.
Everyone is welcome to attend LSE's public events, where some of the most influential figures in the
social sciences can be heard. They are aimed mainly at the intelligent lay person who is interested in
policy issues. Events are generally free and open to all, with entry on a first come, first served basis –
unless otherwise stated.

The Great British Business Show is a free annual business exhibition offering
a wealth of opportunity, advice and information crucial for ongoing business
