The EducationUSA Academy 2015 Pilot Program will bring self-funded 15- to 17-year old students from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru to one of two host universities for a four-week academic program in July. Students will take intensive English language classes mixed with college preparatory content, covering material such as how to apply to U.S. colleges and universities, how to write a strong essay, U.S. professors’ expectations around academic work and classroom participation, strategies for taking required standardized tests, and much more. They will experience life on a U.S. college campus for four weeks, living in on-campus residence halls, eating meals in on-campus dining facilities, and socializing with American students. Academy students will also have the opportunity to tour at least five diverse U.S. college or university campuses during the program. The program will include fun activities such as picnics and volleyball games with American students. Academy students will attend university or community sports and arts events and visit local tourist sites such as state parks and museums. Students will apply directly to the Academy host institution of their choice and will pay their own tuition, travel and other program-related costs. The program cost will be less than $5000, including lodging and meals. Airfare is not included in the program cost. This is a pilot program for 2015, hosted exclusively by Syracuse University and University of Colorado Boulder, aimed at students from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. The program will be expanded to more U.S. institutions and to students from around the world beginning in Summer 2016.
