Amphibians & Reptiles By: Miss Harvey
What’s an amphibian? An amphibian… is born in the water. lives both on land and in the water. has gills when young, lungs as an adult. has webbed feet. is cold-blooded. has smooth, wet skin. has four legs or no legs. Lays many eggs. What are some amphibians? Frogs Toads Salamanders Caecilians Salamander
Red Salamander The Red Salamander… has a red-orange body with black sports, short legs and yellow eyes. eats mostly earthworms but also other insects, spiders and smaller salamanders. is about 3 ½ to 7 inches long. lives in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern parts of the US. can be found by cold clear springs under rocks and debris.
What’s a reptile? A reptile… is born from an egg on land. can live in the water or on land. has dry scaly skin. usually lays eggs. has ear holes instead of ears. is cold-blooded. has four legs or no legs. What are some reptiles? Alligators Snakes Lizards Turtles Tortoises
The American Alligator The American Alligator… is found in the southeastern part of the US, mostly in Florida. is one of two species of alligators in the world; the other is in China. can grow up to fourteen ft. long; in rare cases they can grow longer. has rough, boney scales. has about 80 teeth in their mouth but have about two-three thousand in their lifetime. egg temperature determines if a male or female hatches; males are only born in moderate temperatures, females are born in hot or cold temperatures.
But I thought Frogs & Toads were the same… Frogs and toads, although both are amphibians are not the same; they have some of the same characteristics but many differences: Toads Frogs Dry, Warty Skin Slimy, Smooth Skin Have a brain No teeth Have teeth in top jaws Amphibians Hatch from eggs Poison glands behind the eyes Bulging Eyes Young have gills, adults have lungs Lay eggs in chains Lay eggs in clusters Live in water Walk Jump Has a heart Has a backbone
