Imagine the Possibilities…
Fellowships, Gap Years, and Short-Term Opportunities

Why am I considering a fellowship, gap year, or other post-graduate opportunity?
Strengthen an application to professional school
	     Try something new
	     Confirm a career decision
	     Take a break
	     Travel and meet new people

What should I be thinking about as I decide what my experience will be?
What would make you most fulfilled? What “ideal” opportunities come to mind?
What knowledge and skills do you want to gain?
	      What are your goals?
What types of relationships or roles are most important to you?
Is geographical location or compensation going to be an important consideration?
What kind of environments do you envision thriving in?
Do you need to acquire additional experiences for professional school?
“Nine Domains to Find Your Fit”

What are different categories of options I might want to think about?
Teach: Teach for America, Citizen Schools, MATCH Schools
       Study: graduate program, fellowship
Work: job to expand skills, experience, knowledge…or just something different
       Research: clinical, basic science
       Fellowships: academic vs working
Intern: options in variety of careers
International: work/teach/study/research abroad, e.g. Teach for China
“Sky’s the Limit:” design an experience unique to you, your interests, your available time

Where can I find specific options to explore?
Internet: CC website, Duke departments, Google searches, Idealist.org
People: NETWORKING w/professors, Duke alums, friends, family, advisors, neighbors, former supervisors,
      LinkedIn groups, etc.
Job resources: eRecruiting (alums have access to Experience.com account after graduation), LinkedIn, pro-
      fessional organizations
Duke/Career Center events: Fall Career Fairs (Sept. 12, Oct. 18); Fellowship Week (Oct. 1-4); Graduate and
      Professional School Day

How could the Career Center help me with designing my experience?
Explore various options and develop effective search strategies
      Assist with resume/cover letter/statement review
      Mock interviews
      Networking preparations
Counseling appointments (30 min) or drop-in appointments (15 min)
