SILK LEAF
History:-
 Julian Melchiorri is an inventor, engineer and entrepreneur based in London.
 Julian is the founder and CEO of Arborea a biochemical technology company based at
Imperial Innovations and part of the European Institute of Technology Climate-KIC
Accelerator.
 Melchiorri subsequently enrolled in a Master of Science from Imperial College of London
and a Master of Arts from Royal College of Arts called "Innovation Design Engineering"
program. Over this period, Melchiorri cultivated his interest and skills in biotechnology,
biomimicry and biomaterials through intensive laboratory experimentation aiming to
harness nature’s efficient technologies to solve major environmental and social issues.
CONT……
 Over the last century, our constantly growing population is burning fossil
fuels and destroying plant life, basically forcing a change in the
atmosphere and climate, reverse-terraforming our planet; while world's
population is constantly growing, the availability for resources such as
food, energy and water are decreasing. Having this constant issues in
mind, Melchiorri founded Arborea, a biochemical technology company
where scientists and engineers makes revolutionizing "Bionic Leaf"
technologies to produce sustainable materials while cleaning-up the
atmosphere from CO2. Arborea mission is to help solve resource scarcity
and global warming on a massive scale by utilizing the oldest and most
important chemical process on Earth, photosynthesis.
 Internationally known for his visionary ‘’Man-made Leaf’’ technologies,
Melchiorri proposes radical environmental solutions for industrial and
urban settings through an innovative exploitation of biotechnologies,
robotics and materials to convert waste and pollution into valuable
resources.
 Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light
energy into chemical energy that can later be released to fuel the organisms'
activities. This chemical energy is stored in carbohydrate molecules, such as
sugars, which are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water – hence the name
photosynthesis
PHOTOSYNTHESIS:-
SILK LEAF:-
 In a period where global carbon emission and urbanization are
growing exponentially the need for creating sustainable solutions for
the indoor and outdoor urban environment arise.
 Following Melchiorri’s biomimicry approach to bring the efficiency
of nature's technologies into the man-made, he conducted laboratory
experimentation in order to make photosynthesizing materials and
explore their possible applications.
 Silk Leaf is the first outcome of this exploration path.
It is the first prototype which introduces the potential impact that
photosynthesizing materials could have on our everyday life.
 It is made of a biological material mostly composed by silk protein
and chloroplasts. Silk Leaf absorbs CO2 and produces oxygen and
organic compounds that have photosynthetic ability of the stabilized
chloroplasts inside silk protein. Any visible light and water is needed
to enable the reaction.
Cond….
 Having the necessity to provide water to the chloroplasts to enable the
photosynthesis, another embedded technology to deliver water to the
chloroplasts has been introduced, inspired to how natural leafs work.
 The water can also remove chemical residues and sugars through osmosis,
introducing the idea to collect it for energy generation.
 The level of oxygen generation could be optimized depending on many factors,
from the material composition to the quantity and efficiency of chloroplasts into
silk. Recent scientific publications shows nano-bionic interventions on
chloroplasts increasing their photosynthetic efficiency by 49%. This and other
research on genetic modification could allow a dramatic improvement of their
efficiency.
SYNTHESIS OF SILK LEAF:-
MATERIAL REQUIREMENT
1 SILK PROTEIN
2 CHLOROPLAST
3 WATER

5 CO2
SILK:- Silk protein which have great structural optical and biological properties Silk is a
protein produced by Bombyx mori during spinning of cocoon. Basically it is mostly
composed by silk protein which is a protein extract from silk fibers which have
outstanding biological stabilization properties and also stabilize chloroplast inside the
protein matrix and also introduced another technology in order to deliver water to these
much he throw it to chloroplast in order to activate the photosynthetic process.
SILK PROTEIN:- Silk protein which have great structural optical and biological

the photosynthetic process.
COCOON SILK FIBRE
CHLOROPLAST:-
 Chloroplasts are organelles that conduct photosynthesis, where the
photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll captures the energy from sunlight,
converts it, and stores it in the energy-storage molecules ATP and NADPH
while freeing oxygen from water in plant and algal cells
ADVANTAGE:-
1)Artificial Leaf's could be used in many applications were the level of
CO2 are high or Oxygen is needed.
2)Inside ventilation systems, free form surface for interiors, together with
the lighting.
3)Space exploration ...
4) ) The many benefits of Oxygen and CO2.
5) The low energy consumption
