The former director of inpatient psychiatry at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Sridhar Yaratha has treated adult psychiatric patients at Gateway Homes since 2006. Dr. Sridhar Yaratha utilizes a number of interventions to treat patients with generalized anxiety disorder. People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) may experience persistent symptoms that interfere with their daily lives, including difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, fatigue, or sleep disturbances. Anxiety disorder responds well to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a form of talk therapy that trains people to shift their thinking about specific issues in order to find relief. CBT relies on the principle that thoughts inform feelings and emotions. By reframing thoughts and beliefs, people can change their feelings and behaviors. Treatment for GAD might also include a regimen of daily exercise, breathing techniques, or progressive muscle relaxation to help people clear the tension in their bodies. In some cases, antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that provide immediate relief may be necessary to manage GAD symptoms.
