This National Park is home

It was established in 1981
and it is named after the
Hemis Monastery, founded in
1630 by Lama Tagstang.
4. Hemis, Ladakh is the world's snow leopard capital.
The International Snow Leopard Day (ISLD) is celebrated every year on 23rd of October to protect and
conserve the snow leopards and preserve the beautiful wildlife of the Himalayas.
It is believed to have 400 to 700 snow leopards spread across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand,
Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
5. Hemis National Park does not receive much rainfall throughout the year, as
it is located in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas.
Hence, the park is dotted with dry forests, with fir being present at lower
altitudes.
6. The park is home to 16 mammals
species and 73 bird species.
some of important species are bharal
(bleu sheep), shapu (Ladakhi Urial),
Himalayan Marmot, Himalayan Mouse
Hare and the main attraction, the snow
leopard.
Other animals which one can spot inside
the park are Eurasian Brown Bear, Red
Fox and Tibetan Wolf.
It is home to a wide variety of birds,
with some of the famous ones being
golden eagle, lammergeier vulture, robin
accentor, streaked rosefinch, red-billed
chough and fire-fronted serin.
