There are over 5000 Munjanad families spread across various regions in Kerala. Most Munjanad family members are Christians from various denominations, along with some Nairs, Ezhavas, and Brahmins. The researcher's discussions with professors and a church souvenir led them to start researching the history of the Munjanad Kingdom and its close association with Ayyappa and Sabarimala. As someone belonging paternally to the Munjanad family and maternally to the Manoor family, the researcher has a personal interest in this work.
2. In Kerala, there are more than 5000 Munjanad families
spread across Ranni, Konni, Erumely, Chengannoor,
Thiruvella, Changanacherry, Kanjirappally, Pala,
Thodupuzha, Moovattupuzha, Kottayam, Kannoor and
Vaynad. Most of the family members of Munjanad are
Christians, including Syrian Catholics, Syrian
Orthodox or Jacobites, besides a limited number of
Nairs, Ezhavas, and Brahmins. Some of the senior
members of the Zamurin Family of Calicut told me that
Zamurians were related to Munjanad Kingdom having
close relationship with Ayyappa and
Malikapurathmma of Sabarimala. So I started my
research on the History of Sabarimala, after my
discussions with the Professors of History &
Malayalam of Calicut University.
3. In Kerala, there are more than 3000 Manoor
Families spread across different parts of Kerala.
Maternally, I belong to Manoor Family of
Mavada, Pala settled at Chenappdy and then
Koratty, Kanjirappally. In my recent work on
the History of Ayyappa and Sabarimala, I
examined the Buddhist root of all families and
place names ending with ‘pally’ and ‘oor’or
‘ur’, including Manoor, Vellappally,
Kadakampally, Chuttilappally, Kannoor,
Thirur, Kodugalloor, Chenagannoor and etc.
4. I started my research on Ayyappa and Munjanad
Kingdom, after my discussion with the history
professors of Calicut University, especially Dr. M.
G. S. Narayanan on the basis of the 150th
Anniversary of Kanjirappally St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in 1979 and its Souvenir in which the
history of Munjanad Family had been discussed.
I came to know that Munjanad was not mere a
family but a Kingdom very much closely
associated with Ayyappa and Sabarimala and
Zamurians of Calicut. Since I belong to Munjanad
family of Kanjirappally paternally and Manoor
Family maternally, I am more interested in this
research work.
