Explanation About Total number of Ayat (verses) in Al Quran (Click Here)
❖Scholars have different opinions about the number of the Quranic verses.
❖But this conflict is just about “numerating” the verses.
Here are some points about the difference:
a) Some scholars numerated the long sentences as 2 or 3 verses, while some others regarded
them as 1 whole verse.
b) Besides, Shafii scholars regarded “Bismillah r- Rahman-ir-Rahim” as a part of each sura and
didn’t numerate them. But the Hanafi scholarsregarded each “Bismillah r- Rahman-ir-Rahim”
as specific verses, so counted them.
c) It’s the same about the hurooful muqattaa (some secret letters which are written in the
beginning of some suras like ”Ya sin, ha mim”.) Some scholars numerated them as specific
verses, while the others not.
The number of the verses according to Scholars:
➢ Ibn-i-Abbas (RA): 6616
➢ Nafi (RA): 6217
➢ Shayba (RA): 6214
➢ Scholars of Egypt (RA): 6226 18
Dr. Jameel G. Jargar
➢ Zamahshari (RA) (the genius Eloquence Scholar of the Arabic language and literature): 6666.
➢ Bediuzzaman, mujaddid (the reformer) of the 13 century, also has the opinion of 6666 verses.
➢ Ibn-i Huzeyme (one of the big imams) made the following explanations on “6666” issue while
handling the “Quran’s miracle of number” topic of his book titled “An Nasih wa’l Mansuh”:
1) 1000 verses about Promising (wa’ad)
2) 1000 about Threat (wa’id)
3) 1000 Command (amr) verses
4) 1000 Forbiddance (nahy) verses
5) 1000 Information and Story verses
6) 1000 Warning and Example verses
7) 500 verses about Ruling
8) 100 verses about Invocation and Glorification
9) 66 “nasih and mansuh” ("the Abrogating and Abrogated") verses
Totally there are 6666 verses in the Quran
Consequently, the expression “Quran has 6666 verses.” is based on the mentioned points.

But Today, All Accepting the Opinion of Al Kufa that
Al Quran Consist of 6236 verses.
(6236 verses followed in the present discussion )
❖ Total number of verses in Al Quran is 6236 with the “Bismillah r-
Rahman-ir-Rahim” not included except for Surah Al Fatihah.
❖ With “Bismillah r- Rahman-ir-Rahim” included the total number
of Quranic Verses are 112 + 6236 = 6348.
Scholars after the Prophet Muhammad (‫)ﷺ‬ have done
additional division of the Qur’an (i.e. Manzil, Juz and Hizb)
for the convenience of reading/memorization (recitation)

Explanation About number of Ruku in Al Quran (Click Here)
❑ There are 540 Ruku in Al Quran. (Click Here)
❑ This subdivision is not part of original revelation but adopted later-on to facilitate
completion of Al Quran on the 27th night of Ramadan (i.e. on Laylatul Qadr).
❑ The Ruku of The Holy Quran was not to be found in the time of Nabi Muhammad (‫,)ﷺ‬ nor
in the time of the Sahaaba (RA). Around 4 AH the Ulema of Bukhara, Russia divided the
entire Quran into 540 Ruku for Taraaweeh purposes.
❑ The Equation is as Follows:
❑ When devising these Ruku the Ulema made sure that Ruku contained Ayat of the
same topic and theme; because the Hafiz goes into Ruku after reciting it in one
Raka'at of Taraaweeh Salaah.
❑ After further study found that Al Quran has Actual 558 Ruku. (Click Here)
(558 Ruku followed in the present discussion)
1 Ruku per Raka'at x 20 Raka'at = 20 Ruku per Night of Ramadan x 27 Nights of Ramadan = 540 Ruku
Dr. Jameel G. Jargar
Bukhari recorded from Abdullah bin Masud, “Surah Najm was the first of the Surah
in which a prostration/Sajdah was revealed. The Prophet recited it in Makkah and
prostrated. Those who were with the Prophet did the same, except an older man
Umayyah bin Khalaf who took a handful of dust and bowed on it. Later, I saw him
killed as a disbeliever.

According to narrations and hadith, this is the first Surah which Prophet publicly
recited before Meccans and also the first one where a verse requiring prostration
(Sajdah) sent down. The hadiths regarding this are quoted in Bukhari, Muslim, Nisai
and Abu Daud thru narrators like Abdullah bin Masud, Zubair bin Muawiyah, Abu
Ishaq and Aswad bin Yazid.
In the initial period of his Prophethood, Muhammad PBUH tried to present
the message of Allah, but from the very beginning, he faced violent opposition from his
own tribe Quraysh. Those people of his own clan Banu Hashim who had heard the
Divine revelation knew very well in their hearts that how powerful this message was.
They all decided to oppose it, and whenever Prophet tried to recite it openly, they
started making loud noises so that no one could hear. Further, they propagate to
everyone else and to the visitors about Muhammad that he had gone astray and mad
and under the influence of some magic, therefore better not hear him; otherwise, you
could be bewitched. In these conditions, one day prophet stood near Kaaba in front of a
gathering of Meccans and started reciting this Surah. The power of this discourse was
such intense that no one could stop him until when he completed, he fell in prostration,
and that time every listener fell down in prostration with him.

Later those who were there and prostrated were condemned and ridiculed
by others of their listening and prostration. To save their face, they created
a story that when Muhammad recited
“So have you considered Lat and Uzza? And Manat, the third the other
one?” we heard that if he had said, “They are elevated goddesses: verily,
their intercession will be expected.” From this, we thought that
Muhammad had reverted to our faith and thus we prostrated with him. Ref.: 1

  • 18. Did you know? Explanation About Total number of Ayat (verses) in Al Quran (Click Here) ❖Scholars have different opinions about the number of the Quranic verses. ❖But this conflict is just about “numerating” the verses. Here are some points about the difference: a) Some scholars numerated the long sentences as 2 or 3 verses, while some others regarded them as 1 whole verse. b) Besides, Shafii scholars regarded “Bismillah r- Rahman-ir-Rahim” as a part of each sura and didn’t numerate them. But the Hanafi scholarsregarded each “Bismillah r- Rahman-ir-Rahim” as specific verses, so counted them. c) It’s the same about the hurooful muqattaa (some secret letters which are written in the beginning of some suras like ”Ya sin, ha mim”.) Some scholars numerated them as specific verses, while the others not. The number of the verses according to Scholars: ➢ Ibn-i-Abbas (RA): 6616 ➢ Nafi (RA): 6217 ➢ Shayba (RA): 6214 ➢ Scholars of Egypt (RA): 6226 18 Dr. Jameel G. Jargar
  • 19. ➢ Zamahshari (RA) (the genius Eloquence Scholar of the Arabic language and literature): 6666. ➢ Bediuzzaman, mujaddid (the reformer) of the 13 century, also has the opinion of 6666 verses. ➢ Ibn-i Huzeyme (one of the big imams) made the following explanations on “6666” issue while handling the “Quran’s miracle of number” topic of his book titled “An Nasih wa’l Mansuh”: 1) 1000 verses about Promising (wa’ad) 2) 1000 about Threat (wa’id) 3) 1000 Command (amr) verses 4) 1000 Forbiddance (nahy) verses 5) 1000 Information and Story verses 6) 1000 Warning and Example verses 7) 500 verses about Ruling 8) 100 verses about Invocation and Glorification 9) 66 “nasih and mansuh” ("the Abrogating and Abrogated") verses Totally there are 6666 verses in the Quran Consequently, the expression “Quran has 6666 verses.” is based on the mentioned points. Did you know? (1000+1000+1000+1000+1000+1000+500+100+66 = 6666) 19 Dr. Jameel G. Jargar

  • 21. Did you know? 21 Explanation About number of Ruku in Al Quran (Click Here) ❑ There are 540 Ruku in Al Quran. (Click Here) ❑ This subdivision is not part of original revelation but adopted later-on to facilitate completion of Al Quran on the 27th night of Ramadan (i.e. on Laylatul Qadr). ❑ The Ruku of The Holy Quran was not to be found in the time of Nabi Muhammad (‫,)ﷺ‬ nor in the time of the Sahaaba (RA). Around 4 AH the Ulema of Bukhara, Russia divided the entire Quran into 540 Ruku for Taraaweeh purposes. ❑ The Equation is as Follows: ❑ When devising these Ruku the Ulema made sure that Ruku contained Ayat of the same topic and theme; because the Hafiz goes into Ruku after reciting it in one Raka'at of Taraaweeh Salaah. ❑ After further study found that Al Quran has Actual 558 Ruku. (Click Here) (558 Ruku followed in the present discussion) 1 Ruku per Raka'at x 20 Raka'at = 20 Ruku per Night of Ramadan x 27 Nights of Ramadan = 540 Ruku Dr. Jameel G. Jargar

Those who were with the Prophet did the same, except an older man Umayyah bin Khalaf who took a handful of dust and bowed on it. Later, I saw him killed as a disbeliever. 22 Dua ۖ ‫ا‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ْ‫َّل‬‫ب‬َََ‫ت‬ ‫َا‬‫ن‬َّ‫ب‬ َ‫ر‬ ُ‫ل‬‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬‫ا‬َ‫م‬ْ‫س‬ِ‫إ‬ َ‫و‬ ِ‫ت‬ْ‫ي‬َ‫ب‬ْ‫ال‬ َ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ َ‫د‬ِ‫ع‬‫ا‬ َ‫و‬ََْ‫ال‬ ُ‫م‬‫ي‬ِ‫ه‬‫ا‬ َ‫ْر‬‫ب‬ِ‫إ‬ ُ‫ع‬َ‫ف‬ ْ‫ر‬َ‫ي‬ ْ‫ذ‬ِ‫إ‬ َ‫و‬ْ‫ال‬ ُ‫ع‬‫ي‬ِ‫م‬َّ‫س‬‫ال‬ َ‫نت‬َ‫أ‬ َ‫ك‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ُ‫م‬‫ي‬ِ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬-2:127 ("Our Lord, accept [this duty] from us. • 23. In the initial period of his Prophethood, Muhammad PBUH tried to present the message of Allah, but from the very beginning, he faced violent opposition from his own tribe Quraysh. Those people of his own clan Banu Hashim who had heard the Divine revelation knew very well in their hearts that how powerful this message was. They all decided to oppose it, and whenever Prophet tried to recite it openly, they started making loud noises so that no one could hear. Further, they propagate to everyone else and to the visitors about Muhammad that he had gone astray and mad and under the influence of some magic, therefore better not hear him; otherwise, you could be bewitched. In these conditions, one day prophet stood near Kaaba in front of a gathering of Meccans and started reciting this Surah. The power of this discourse was such intense that no one could stop him until when he completed, he fell in prostration, and that time every listener fell down in prostration with him. 23 Dua ۖ ‫ا‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ْ‫َّل‬‫ب‬َََ‫ت‬ ‫َا‬‫ن‬َّ‫ب‬ َ‫ر‬ ُ‫ل‬‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬‫ا‬َ‫م‬ْ‫س‬ِ‫إ‬ َ‫و‬ ِ‫ت‬ْ‫ي‬َ‫ب‬ْ‫ال‬ َ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ َ‫د‬ِ‫ع‬‫ا‬ َ‫و‬ََْ‫ال‬ ُ‫م‬‫ي‬ِ‫ه‬‫ا‬ َ‫ْر‬‫ب‬ِ‫إ‬ ُ‫ع‬َ‫ف‬ ْ‫ر‬َ‫ي‬ ْ‫ذ‬ِ‫إ‬ َ‫و‬ْ‫ال‬ ُ‫ع‬‫ي‬ِ‫م‬َّ‫س‬‫ال‬ َ‫نت‬َ‫أ‬ َ‫ك‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ُ‫م‬‫ي‬ِ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬-2:127 ("Our Lord, accept [this duty] from us.
