INTERNATIONAL WOMWN DAY
• women have also made significant contributions to

• Women are often primary caregivers in families,
responsible for raising children, taking care of the

• International Women's Day is celebrated annually on
March 8th to recognize the social, economic, cultural,
and political achievements of women and to advocate for
gender equality. The theme for International Women's
Day 2023 is yet to be announced.
• The origins of International Women's Day can be
traced back to the early 20th century when women in
Europe and the United States began to organize
themselves to demand better working conditions,
suffrage, and the right to participate in public life. The
first International Women's Day was celebrated on March
19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
• On International Women's Day, people are encouraged to take action to support
gender equality and to challenge gender-based discrimination and violence. This
may involve advocating for policies that promote gender equality, supporting
women's empowerment initiatives, or simply showing solidarity with women in your
community and around the world.
ABOUT WOMEN
• Women are members of the human species who identify as
female or are assigned the female gender at birth based on
biological sex characteristics. Women play a vital role in society
and contribute in numerous ways to the betterment of
communities and the world at large.
• Despite progress towards gender equality, women continue to
face systemic barriers in many areas, including access to
education, healthcare, employment, and political representation.
Discrimination and violence against women, including sexual
harassment, assault, and domestic violence, also remain
significant challenges.
• However, women have also made significant contributions to
society throughout history. Women have been leaders in fields

• Politics: Women have played important roles in politics, serving as elected officials,
leaders, and advocates for women's rights and equality.
• Social Movements: Women have been at the forefront of social movements and
advocacy efforts for civil rights, women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental
justice.
• Peace and Security: Women play an essential role in building and maintaining peace
and security in their communities and countries, often as advocates for non-violent
conflict resolution.
