WHAT IS POLLUTION?
Pollution is the presence of pollutant in the environment which involves the
physical. The presence of pollutants may be natural as well as by the activities of
humans.
Pollution brings biological and chemical changes in air, water and land which affect
the human life and other living oorganism in one way or the other
Types of Pollution
Air Pollution Water Pollution Noise Pollution
Soil/Land
Pollution
Radioactive
Pollution
Thermal Pollution Visual Pollution
1. AIR POLLUTION-REASONS
MOTOR VEHICLE INDUSTRIAL SMOKE FOREST FIRES FUEL COMBUSTION
AIR POLLUTION-CONTROL MEASURES
• use public transport
• control forest fire
• Strict regulation for motor companies to launch pollution-free vehicle
• use filters for chimney
• industrial chimneys should be at a height so that smoke can be released far
above from living Organism
• use of the solar cooking system and LPG instead of coal and woodfire
2.WATER POLLUTION-REASONS
• Radioactive Waste
• Industrial & Domestic Sewage
• Agriculture & Food Processing Waste
• Detergents-washing of clothes in rivers
• Release of Pesticides in surrounding water
bodies
WATER POLLUTION-CONTROL MEASURES
• Save water by turning taps off immediately after use
• do not throw paints and oil in water bodies
• use eco friendly detergent for washing cloth
• in agriculture over use of pesticide and fertiliser should be avoided
• do not litter the water bodies
• Try to clean the litter which you see on beaches or on the banks of river and lakes
3. NOISE POLLUTION-REASONS & CONTROL
MEASURES
REASONS
According to WHO noise above 65 decibel (dB) is
noise pollution.
• Traffic Noise- 100 (dB)
• Air Traffic Noise- 130 (dB)
• Construction sites- 110 (dB)
• Catering and nightlife- 100 (dB)
• Animals 60-80 (dB)
CONTROL
• Turn off appliances at home and offices
• shut the door while using machines having
high noise volume
• Follow the limits of noise level
• Plant more trees as they observe noise of the
atmosphere
• control noise level near sensitive areas like
school and hospitals
4. SOIL POLLUTION-REASONS
REASONS
• Agriculture Waste
• Pesticides
• Lead and other heavy metals
SOIL POLLUTION-CONTROL MEASURES
ADOPT THE FORMULA OF 3 RS-REDUCE,
REUSE AND RECYCLE
DO NOT DISPOSE OF NON BIODEGRADABLE
WASTE IN THE SURROUNDING AREAS
PLANT MORE TREES AS THEY HELP TO BIND
THE SOIL
5. RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION-REASONS
• Reasons
• Nuclear weapon testing
• Test on radiation
• Nuclear waste handling and disposal
• Defensive weapon production
RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION-CONTROL MEASURES
Proper disposal of radioactive material
Proper labeling of radioactive content
Putting ban on nuclear test
Proper storage of radioactive material
reusing of harmful waste in best possible method
6. THERMAL POLLUTION-REASONS
• What is thermal pollution?
• In simple terms, thermal pollution takes place when industry and human-made
organizations take water from natural resources that are to be used as a coolant. Then
the same water is ejected back into natural resources as hot water. This water which
suddenly mixes with the normal water changes the oxygen level and have a harmful
effect on the local ecosystem, aquatic plant, and living organism of water.
• Reasons-The following are the man-made sources responsible for thermal pollutions:
• Nuclear Power Plant, Coal-fired power Plant, Industrial Effluents, Domestic Sewage,
Hydro-electric power, Thermal Power Plant.
• Natural causes like volcanoes, geothermal vents, and hot springs under the oceans
and seas can trigger warm lava to raise the temperature of water bodies.
THERMAL POLLUTION –CONTROL METHODS
• The hot water should be released in surrounding water reserve only after getting
cold through cooling towers
• Artificial lakes can be constructed to collect the water for cooling purposes and
rreleasing the hot water back
• Industrial treated water can be recycled for domestic use or industrial heating.
7. VISUAL POLLUTION-REASONS
• Smog
• Fumes
• Buildings
• Wires
• Antennas
• Advertising
• Traffic signs
• Lighting
7. VISUAL POLLUTION –CONTROL METHODS
Avoid the excessive use of physical advertising
Avoid waste production
Reduce the use of cars
Use public transport or bicycle
Signs against littering
Only build buildings that fit into the surroundings
Concealed wiring
SOLID WASTE
• Definition:
• Solid waste is the useless and unwanted products discarded by society. It is
produced either by - product or the production processes or arise form the
domestic or commercial sector when objects or materials are discarded after use.
• Examples: waste tires, scrap metal, furniture and toys, garbage, empty aerosol
cans, paint cans and compressed gas cylinders, construction and demolition
debris etc.
Types of solid waste
Biodegradable
Biodegradable waste is
degraded with time in natural
ways by means of bacteria, air
and temperature.
Non-biodegradable
Non-biodegradable waste is
difficult to handle as it does not
get decompose by natural ways
Methods of solid waste
disposal
Incineration
Organic waste is burnt
Pulverisation
Waste is turned into
powder
Mechanical composting
Garbage is turned into
manure
Trenching
Garbage is buried under
the ground for
composing purpose
Controlled Tipping
Garbage is buried 4-7
feet deep in the soil
Disposal into Sea
Garbage is disposed off
into the sea
Filling of Low Lying
Areas
Garbage is dumped into
low lying arears
GREEN HOTELS
• Green hotel are environmentally friendly properties which tries to minimize the
negative impact on the environment.
• These hotels implement the energy and water conservation policies and tries to
reduce or recycle the waste.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE METHODS IN
GREEN HOTELS
Green hotels adopts the following practices to preserve the environment:
• They Install energy saving technology.
• They have started composting from kitchen waste
• Green hotels Implement water conservation methods
• They implement the 3 Rs system- reduce, reuse and recycle
• Green hotels Encourage guests to help in environmentally sustainable practices
• More trees are planted
• They support local sustainable business
• Green hotels adopts alternative energy resources
