Shows you how to estimate the square root of a number without using a calculator.
You’ll find perfect squares until a perfect square is greater than your number. Call this h.
Then you’ll find the next lowest perfect square. Call this l.
The square root of your number n is between l and h.

1. Estimate Square Roots
● Also called find square root without a calculator
● Quick and dirty way to find an estimate (approximation) or
a square root
● Find goalposts, or endpoints
● High Endpoint (h)
● Low Endpoint (l)
● Square Root is between l and h

2. Estimate Square Root Steps
● Estimate the square root of a number (n)
● Start at 1 and keep squaring integers.
● 12 = 1, 22 = 4, 32 = 9, ...
● Once the square of your integer is greater than n, Stop
● This is your high value, call it h.
● Take the last squared integer before h, this is your low
value, call it l
● l < ⺁n < h

3. Estimate Square Root Example
● Estimate the square root of 40
● Start at 1 and keep squaring integers
● 12 = 1, 22 = 4, 32 = 9, 42 = 16, 52 = 25, 62 = 36, 72 = 49
● 49 is your high value, call it h.
● 36 is our l value
● 36 < ⺁40 < 49
