American Satire Examples Of Satire
In the Netflix mockumentary series, American Vandal, created by Dan Perrault, the main character Dylan Maxwell, an 18–year–old senior at Hanover
High School was held responsible for performing vandalism on 27 cars causing $100K worth of disfiguring. Everybody believed that Dylan was in
charge of the destruction, despite the fact that he claimed innocence. Instead, they thought Alex Trimboli, the "eyewitness," Ms Shapiro, the Spanish
teacher and everyone else that claimed he was behind the vandalism were speaking the truth. They put Dylan as the prime suspect based on his past
with Ms Shapiro and furthermore because they believed he was capable of committing such crime. The examples of satire that the creators used were
humour, exaggeration and irony. A diversion was utilised to make the show enjoyable for young people, yet with the use of satire, they could influence
teenagers to appreciate the show while accepting a genuine message about how a false allegation against anyone could destroy their lives. Many of
the people in the show were biased against rebellious teenagers which was something that Dylan was known for being. In the mockumentary, Dylan
Maxwell was accused based off his image, his past, as well as his lifestyle. A significant number of the students that were requested to share their
opinion said that what Dylan had to state did not make a difference since he was imbecilic and so forth. The thesis of the show is never to prejudge a
person based on their past.

Satire In A Modest Proposal
A Modest Proposal, an excellent example of a satirical essay written by Jonathan Swift in the seventeenth century. This essay presents an issue of the
poor people (mostly females and children's) begging every person on the streets of Ireland for an alms. To counter this issue, the author through the
means of satire presents his own proposal in such a way that it would disgust and enrage the readers (specifically the merchants and landlords). He
suggest that poor people might ease their problems by selling their fatten children for eight shillings, at the age of one, as a food to the rich landlords,
who, as the author points out, "have already devoured most of the parents" anyway by achieving success at the expense of the lower class people. The
author states that his proposal would solve the problem of overpopulation in the country, it would greatly lessen the number of papists, whom he
addresses as their biggest enemies and it would also...show more content...
The author's main purpose of presenting his proposal with gruesome ideas was to draw the attention of the wealthy people of Ireland, who are capable of
bringing the change in the society, but have done nothing to help the situation. The author's intent is to motivate these wealthy people to find a
workable solution for these issues.
In this essay, the author addresses this issue of poor people and build on his proposal with the use of ethos, pathos, logos, and a strong and demanding
voice. He establish his credibility in this essay by referring to his American friend in London and by possessing goodwill towards the people of Ireland
and by convincing them that he

A satire is a piece of work that is designed to ridicule or tease a group or organization, generally for the purpose of being humorous. "The
Importance of Being Earnest," a play by Oscar Wilde, is a satire, ridiculing class, gender, and marriage. This essay will describe some points from
each of these sections, as well as give a brief synopsis of the play these examples come from. The Importance of being Earnest includes three acts,
with seven major characters. In act one, we start with a conversation between Jack (a notable bachelor) and Algernon (an in debt bachelor, with a laid
back temperament), in which we learn both have made up 'friends,' who are often sick, as to escape from wherever they live whenever they want. We

Gwendolyn and Cecily act as friends until they learn that they are supposedly engaged to the same person. Then they learn neither of them are engaged
to anybody named Ernest, and are friends again. In act three, we discover Jacks history, including that he is Algernon's elder brother. In the end, despite
several lies, arguments, and much turmoil, everybody gets married. There are many examples of satire referring to class. One of the first is the 'fact'
that the side of the street you live on affects how 'fashionable' you are. This is an example of satire because it is not true, and is ridiculing high
class people by pointing out how shallow that they can be. Another example is the statement that sugar is a low class food item. This is a satire for
the same reason as the first example. A third example of class related satire is that high class people always talk about other peoples business. This
ridicules high class people for being churlish and not allowing for other peoples privacy. In all, "Earnest" points out how snobbish and shallow Mr.
Wilde thought high class people are. There are also many examples of gender based satire. The first of these is that only men can have a Bunburry.
This is not true and shows that men think themselves more sophisticated than women. A second example of this type of satire is that women marry
for a name. This is a satire because it ridicules women for being shallow. A final example of gender related satire is that women are

Satire On Drugs
The drug abuse is the most serious issue not only in United States but other parts of the world too. The statistic has shown that 24.4million of
American including teens from age of 12, had used an illegal drugs. The primary purpose of drug is a medicine which is to cure diseases, but people
in United States nowadays, have misused the usage of drugs by consuming them without recommendation or supervision from the expert. People use
drugs as a solution to reduce stress, to relieve the boredom, for enjoyment and also to forget all the dilemmas they have. Besides, drug also can act as an
energy booster. For example, when students take drugs, they able to stay up all night to study and complete all of their assignments while for athletes
they able to perform well during the competition and at the same time to stay fit. Sometimes, people use drugs as they are curious how the taste of
drugs is and want to experiment the feeling of drugs. They think by taking drug only once will not give any bad consequence to them. It is true for

Effectively ushering change in society or pointing out faults that have existed and gone unnoticed can be a daunting task for any social commentator.
Often, blandly protesting grievances or concerns can fall upon deaf ears and change can be slow or non–existent. However, Jonathan Swift in his
pamphlet A Modest Proposal, uses clever, targeted, and ironic criticism to bring the social state of Ireland to the attention of indolent aristocrats. He
accomplishes such criticism through satire, specifically Juvenalian satire. Swift's A Modest Proposal stands as an example of the type of satire that
plays upon the audience's emotion by creating anger concerning the indifference of the voice created. He complements such criticism with sophisticated,

This fact arouses anger, in that the audience realizes the proposer seems indifferent to the fact that he is proposing to murder thousands of children.
Contrastingly, such morally unconventional solutions would not exist in a calmer, straight forward Horatian satire. Yet, even in evaluating how anger
is emotionally imposed on the audience due to the absurdity of the proposal, it's impossible to disregard the role of humor. There are obvious
elements of humor throughout the proposal and amusement in the very nature of the proposal is expected. However, any sense of humor abruptly
disappears at the heart of the critism. When the proposer begins stating "I can think of no one objection that will possibly be raised against this
proposal" the humor stops and the voice of Swift, as well as sharp criticism, begins. Although humor may be an integral part of the proposal and
certainly a partial indication of the use of Horatian satire, the fact that humor isn't present throughout the whole proposal suggests that the use of
hilarity is secondary. Rather, this contrast of humor and emotionally imposed irritation only helps to emphasize the role of anger. This is especially
evident when one considers the irony that litters the humorous proposal. Swift's development of the absurd proposal

Jonathan Swift, in his essay "A Modest Proposal", effectively utilizes an extended metaphor in order to convey his message that we must take
action against widespread poverty. The satirical point employed suggests that poor children be eaten in order to decrease the surplus population,
and is efficacious due to the fact that in such a terrible state of affairs, cannibalism can be logically defended as a viable solution. Swift's essay,
written in 1729, clearly precedes the existing social programs in effect throughout much of the first world. However, the ominous reality is that
Swift's essay can just as effectively be used as a comparison, albeit a figurative one, to modern day society, if our current welfare spending continues.
Implicit within Swift's essay is a call for radical change to the inaction towards the poor that existed in his 18th century society. Though his call was
thoroughly addressed by nearly every global government, the poor class has not shrunk in any way due to this, and in fact, government assistance has
only worsened the problem. One must only examine the nature of the welfare state to see the oppression inherent within it. By definition, the welfare
state is a means of giving assistance to those who do not produce an arbitrary amount of recorded capital for themselves. There is absolutely no
encouragement to work, no obligation for productivity. Rather, the Heritage Foundation reported that only two of 80 tested welfare programs in
America had

"A Modest Proposal" is a social commentary written by Jonathan Swift, he uses techniques such as irony, satire, and sarcasm to mock the Irish
government of his time. After reading Swift's essay half way through, one might not believe how graphic and shocking it's been written. He wrote a
letter suggesting they sell the children of the poor to the wealthy families, as this will provide food, clothing, and will decrease the population.
Throughout the letter he uses remarkable details as to how they should go about eating the children, treating them as livestock. The letter ends with a
completely different tone when the author explains the absurdity of his proposal and instead suggests something a bit more realistic and humane like
the wealthy should give up some of their luxuries. He uses a lot of thorough, literalized metaphors, and ironic and sarcasm techniques to a devastating
effect. A Modest Proposal has been judged as an excellent work of rhetorical brilliancy, and it acquires readers critical attention up until now Swift
exposes all the bizarre remarks and ideas he has been discussing about are all a humorous way to make fun of the way the government is run and

Incongruity: Examples Of Satire In Short Stories

social issues. This paper will identify what are satire and analysis three examples that satirize social issues in short stories. There are mainly three types

Satire In Mark Twain's 'The War Prayer'
Satire: a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony,
exaggeration, or ridicule. In the early 1900s, talk was all about war, but war was not all talk. The United States was involved in multiple wars, and
most people believed war to be a positive thing. Those with differing opinions were publicly shamed, and Mark Twain was not exactly shy about
flaunting his opinion at first. His personal views of the goings–on in the world can be found in his writing, and "The War Prayer" was no different. Mark
Twain's "The War Prayer" informs the reader of his negative views of war in multiple ways, and show how only dead men can speak out about their
opinions. This is shown with the double meaning behind the "age stranger" quote, the capitalization of Throne, and using his personal quote about dead
men.
In "The War Prayer", the term "age stranger" shows the reader the strange man who walked into the church was actually dead. The story is set in a
little town where the volunteer military men are heading off to war the next day, and this takes place during the church service. The entirety of the
town is congregated there listening to the preacher's war prayer from the Old Testament, and then "An age stranger entered and moved with slow and
noiseless step" (Twain, 1) and walked up to the front, pushed the preacher out of the way, and proceeded to inform the congregation of the unuttered

Irony in Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal
Rhetorical strategies are techniques, which are used to make one's writings more effective. The choice of rhetoric strategy depends on the type of
subject being discussed. The effectiveness of appropriate strategy is directly related to the mood, which is to be created and maintained. For example if
someone is criticizing the government, the tome is usually kept serious and Irony and satire are widely used in such writings. On the other hand while

Swift was not the only one who applied the technique of irony to convey his message more effectively, there were several other people who from time
to time have made use of satire with irony to comment on or oppose to certain views and ideas. Martin Luther King Jr. was the champion of human
rights who spoke extensively for the rights of African–Americans. He became an icon for the black community because of his highly emotional
speeches and his writings, which focused on the subject of equal rights for black men and women in the United States.
His "Letters from the Birmingham jail" are valued for their emotional content and their comments on his own activities. These letters cannot exactly
be termed satirical or ironical in tone. In fact compared to Swift's works, King's letters would probably appear polite. But there are certain portions
where he has used irony very effectively for example in his response to clergymen who had criticized King's activities, he said in his letter, "While
confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I

Examples Of Satire In Modest Proposal
Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift is an example of satirical writing. Satire means using humour to attack an idea or behaviour, ridiculing people or
institution to effect change. Modest Proposal was written in 1729 in order to shock English society to be more aware of the unjust of politics towards
the Irish community. Swift talks about the poverty–stricken Irish parents who cannot find close to decent jobs to support their kids, but they have to
spend their time begging at passer–by for something to be able to feed their kids, whom eventually grow up to become thieves or emigrants. His
solution to the extreme poverty is to render the children of Ireland from the poorer families and offer them to the richer families as food. By offering

essay describes the aggravation at the ineptitude of Ireland's politicians, the hypocrisy of the wealthy people the English people's tyranny and the
degradation of the state of which so many Irish people live in. poverty seems to be a known struggle for most people in Ireland. So many parents
cannot manage to get a decent job in order to support themselves and their kids. They spend their days begging at passers–by for more or food. Now
the poverty drives the youth into a life of crime and slavery. When they are young, their parents struggle to get food on the table for them, and
when they grow up, they repay their parents by getting into trouble with the law. With that, their standards of living don't improve even when the
children grow up the cycle starts again. The modest proposal is an ironic attempt to 'find a fair, cheap and easy method for trying to help with the
situation of the starting families into a more 'useful member of the commonwealth'. Swift comes with a solution and argues that the best way to get
Ireland out of their degradation of poverty is to sell the children of the poor to a meat market at the late age of one, because converting adolescents
to food would not work because their flesh is considered tough and lean. By selling these children they combine the problems of overpopulation and
unemployment by sparing families the expense of having to feed another mouth, with the little money. But with one less mouth to feed and more
money they will be able to have enough to help them for a few days. He then argues with statistics by stating that 120 000 infants are born every year
in Ireland, 100 000 of those infants would be sold

Analysis Of Lord Byron's Satire
The Reasons for Byron's Satire
Satire mocks a person or an event by using humor, irony, and exaggeration for the purpose to expose the true identity of someone or something. In the
early 19th century, Lord Byron, also known as George Gordon, a leading figure in the Romantic Movement was heavily involved in satire because he
saw great poets such as Walter Scott, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, andWilliam Wordsworthbetraying their principles. The poets also lost their passion
towards the Romantic Movement. In addition, the usage of satire fits the personality of Byron because he always found his experiences in life
humorous and never lost touch with reality, which allowed him to grow as an influential poet. Furthermore, Lord Byron's mission was to use satire to
entertain his audience, make other Romantic poet sellouts look like fools, and expose public truths through humor.
Byron wants to entertain his audience by using his good humor and charm to project his emotions. Byron is genuinely a good person, but he
became intellectually dangerous due to the mistreatment he received from people in his early life. Moreover, his personality and attitude led him
to the creation of the antihero or the Byronic hero. This defines him as a rebellious, arrogant, and antisocial person. Byron's strong character helps
him express his feelings that will eventually unfold the truths in the world within his writing. Rössner quotes Byron describing his life by
expressing, "if I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth it has stuck in my throat and spoilt my palate forever" (264). Describing that if he was
born rich everything he knew and his prospective about life would have changed. We would never meet the famous Lord Byron that grew from his
hard pass to become an important person in the literature world. Furthermore, Byron, while in college, wrote his first satirical poem teasing his
critics. The turning point of his literary career is when he begins traveling. Byron gains new experiences and finds his calling towards literature;
people become enthralled by his poems. Over time, his popularity increased to a point where the aristocracy and the literary world of London adored
him. Ultimately, he found his voice in "Childe Harold's

Examples Of Irony In A Modest Proposal
Identify and close–read three examples of irony in "A Modest Proposal".
How does each instance criticize social perceptions of the poor? In 'A Modest Proposal' the author, Jonathan Swift utilizes techniques such as satire,
sarcasm, and irony to create a bigger picture to the reader. Within the poem, Swift not only presents a humorous approach to social and economic
issues but does so in a well–constructed and carefully composed manner. A closer reading of the text reveals a deeper critical analysis of the social
perceptions of the poor at the time. Through Swifts' use of irony, he creates a proposal that is so extremely absurd that some may believe the piece to
be genuine. By taking an issue and providing a corrupt and merciless solution, the writer uses a unique approach to catch the attention of the people of
Ireland and presents them a proposal they cannot ignore. Through the use of irony, Swift creates a poem that not only criticizes social perceptions of
the poor but also remarks upon the issue without directly addressing the reader.
Beginning with an examination of the subtitle, the stance of the narrator and his views of the poor are evident immediately. "...For Preventing the
Children of Poor People in Ireland, from being a Burden to their Parents or Country; and for making them beneficial to the Public." (Swift Para.1).
This example is a distinct instance of irony; in which Swift uses such long, elaborate sentence to summarize his main proposition. By referring to

Satire Examples In Literature
Satire is a genre of literature that uses wit for the purpose of social criticism and mocks societal problems, such as in government, business and
individuals to bring attention to certain follies, vices, and abuses. ("Satire Examples and Definition." ) The use of such a literary form serves to bring
attention to issues in society that should be improved. Satire is diverse, complex and commonly characterized in 3 ways, Horatian, Juvenalian, and
Menippean. Tomorrow's Bird" and "We ate the Children Last" are more of the Menippean style as they attack the mental attitudes rather than specific
individuals or entities. (Mennipean Satire) Satire, when used correctly is not about what is written but what is implied. Illuminating things in human
nature that need to be improved, such as the pursuit of power and corruption as seen in "Tomorrow's Bird" and "We Ate the Children Last".
"We ate the Children Last", the author uses satire to bring to light how easy in human society it is to forget the ugly aspects of our society by ignoring
the issues and or hiding the problem away instead of dealing with the root cause.

Social Issues In A Modest Proposal
"As a result Ireland was desperately poor country, overpopulation, full, as swift said, of beggars, wracked periodically by famine, heavily taxed, and
with no say at all in its own affairs" by David Cody introduced in an introduction to A Modest Proposal. For the senior project I will be introducing the
topic of poverty and class issue during A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. In 1729, Ireland was poverty–stricken and well under the impression that
there wasn't people who were able to provide for themselves. The writer portrays a sense of sympathy and the need for a solution during the 18th
century. As a result, Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal claiming an indication that in order for families in Ireland to live a standard,
comfortable life style they would have to kill the children of the poor and feed them to Ireland's rich land–owners. This idea was brought up to view
the fear of overpopulation, limiting rights of the Irish and the effect of penal laws during the 18th century and in A Modest Proposal.
As Swift is satirically writing, he introduces an idea that brings up a religious aspect as well as a fear of over population in Ireland. Immediately,
Jonathan Swift conveys a plain argument that is supposed to help the people of Ireland; with the intention of killing the Irish's children so that they can
benefit the rest of the world. Furthermore, the writer speaks upon the matter at hand "there are more children born in Roman Catholic countries about

Examples Of Jonathan Swift Satire
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1667. As a young man, he felt bitter regarding the state of affair of the English society. His career as a
writer emerged with his work– "A Tale of a Tub" and "The Battle of Books". In the preface to "The Battle of Books" Swift remarks that "Satire is a sort
of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind reception it meets in the
world, and that so very few are offended by it".
Satires can be divided into two categories– personal and general. A personalsatire is an attack on a person or group of people whom the writer does
not like for personal or public reasons. So he ridicules those traits of his target that are objectionable. One of the famous personal satires is Dryden's
"Mac Flecknoe". In a general satire, the target is the vices of the mankind and not a particular individual. "The Battle of Books", "A Tale of a Tub"

In his works, he has targeted not the individuals but what he detested in his contemporary society or what he considered to be the general foibles of
human nature. In these satires, the speaker is not Swift himself but some persona that he has assumed for the occasion. In "Gulliver's Travels", this
person is Gulliver and Swift's chosen vehicle is the imaginary voyage. Gulliver is a fair representative of the contemporary Englishman. This character
has been employed by Swift for moral judgment and critical observations. Gulliver dwells upon the conflict between High– Heels and Low Heels; the
reader recognizes that this is a satirical account between Roman Catholics and Protestants. When Gulliver describes the rope dancing and creeping
under a string, we know that Swift is satirizing the sycophancy of the politicians in their effort to win royal

Satirical cartoon analysis Essay examples
Welcome, everyone to my session of the current affairs week conference.
Today I will be analyzing an Australian Political cartoon targeting a current issue– Tony Abbott and his Asylum seeker policy
I have chosen a relevant cartoon by Cathy Wilcox, published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 22nd of December 2013. I'll firstly outline the
cartoon's contextual information, after which I'll explore the satirical elements used by Wilcox to persuade the readers of her perspective. Finishing
with an evaluation of the cartoons effectiveness.
Firstly, to the context of this cartoon. The cartoon addresses the desperate and dangerous situation of asylum seekers arriving by boat toAustralia.

Secondly, Wilcox uses incongruity through visual elements to further her views. Incongruity is most evident when focusing on the man sellinglottery
tickets to the refugees, with the prize being accepted into Australia. This lottery concept is bizarrely, yet intentionally associated with the refugees,
highlighting how they are manipulated with false promises. The facial expressions and symbols used enhance the cartoon's incongruity. The ticket
seller's immensely large grin suggests there is more to this lottery offer than meets the eye, alongside his remark "Get your lottery tickets here!" an
unusual phrase to hear in refugee areas. The sign written with Australia, $5000.... states the price of a lottery ticket though the ellipses imply that a
greater cost is involved. They are gambling with money as well as taking big risks with their lives with no guarantee of safely reaching Australia. The
refugees' anxious expressions show their realization of the dangers but their disparity forces them to take these risks. Finally, to the effectiveness of this
cartoon.
Overall the cartoon is very effective. It is eye–catching and it's use of parody and incongruities in conjunction with the visual elements effectively

American Satire Examples Of Satire

  • 1. American Satire Examples Of Satire In the Netflix mockumentary series, American Vandal, created by Dan Perrault, the main character Dylan Maxwell, an 18–year–old senior at Hanover High School was held responsible for performing vandalism on 27 cars causing $100K worth of disfiguring. Everybody believed that Dylan was in charge of the destruction, despite the fact that he claimed innocence. Instead, they thought Alex Trimboli, the "eyewitness," Ms Shapiro, the Spanish teacher and everyone else that claimed he was behind the vandalism were speaking the truth. They put Dylan as the prime suspect based on his past with Ms Shapiro and furthermore because they believed he was capable of committing such crime. The examples of satire that the creators used were humour, exaggeration and irony. A diversion was utilised to make the show enjoyable for young people, yet with the use of satire, they could influence teenagers to appreciate the show while accepting a genuine message about how a false allegation against anyone could destroy their lives. Many of the people in the show were biased against rebellious teenagers which was something that Dylan was known for being. In the mockumentary, Dylan Maxwell was accused based off his image, his past, as well as his lifestyle. A significant number of the students that were requested to share their opinion said that what Dylan had to state did not make a difference since he was imbecilic and so forth. The thesis of the show is never to prejudge a person based on their past. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Satire In A Modest Proposal A Modest Proposal, an excellent example of a satirical essay written by Jonathan Swift in the seventeenth century. This essay presents an issue of the poor people (mostly females and children's) begging every person on the streets of Ireland for an alms. To counter this issue, the author through the means of satire presents his own proposal in such a way that it would disgust and enrage the readers (specifically the merchants and landlords). He suggest that poor people might ease their problems by selling their fatten children for eight shillings, at the age of one, as a food to the rich landlords, who, as the author points out, "have already devoured most of the parents" anyway by achieving success at the expense of the lower class people. The author states that his proposal would solve the problem of overpopulation in the country, it would greatly lessen the number of papists, whom he addresses as their biggest enemies and it would also...show more content... The author's main purpose of presenting his proposal with gruesome ideas was to draw the attention of the wealthy people of Ireland, who are capable of bringing the change in the society, but have done nothing to help the situation. The author's intent is to motivate these wealthy people to find a workable solution for these issues. In this essay, the author addresses this issue of poor people and build on his proposal with the use of ethos, pathos, logos, and a strong and demanding voice. He establish his credibility in this essay by referring to his American friend in London and by possessing goodwill towards the people of Ireland and by convincing them that he Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. A satire is a piece of work that is designed to ridicule or tease a group or organization, generally for the purpose of being humorous. "The Importance of Being Earnest," a play by Oscar Wilde, is a satire, ridiculing class, gender, and marriage. This essay will describe some points from each of these sections, as well as give a brief synopsis of the play these examples come from. The Importance of being Earnest includes three acts, with seven major characters. In act one, we start with a conversation between Jack (a notable bachelor) and Algernon (an in debt bachelor, with a laid back temperament), in which we learn both have made up 'friends,' who are often sick, as to escape from wherever they live whenever they want. We also learn...show more content... Gwendolyn and Cecily act as friends until they learn that they are supposedly engaged to the same person. Then they learn neither of them are engaged to anybody named Ernest, and are friends again. In act three, we discover Jacks history, including that he is Algernon's elder brother. In the end, despite several lies, arguments, and much turmoil, everybody gets married. There are many examples of satire referring to class. One of the first is the 'fact' that the side of the street you live on affects how 'fashionable' you are. This is an example of satire because it is not true, and is ridiculing high class people by pointing out how shallow that they can be. Another example is the statement that sugar is a low class food item. This is a satire for the same reason as the first example. A third example of class related satire is that high class people always talk about other peoples business. This ridicules high class people for being churlish and not allowing for other peoples privacy. In all, "Earnest" points out how snobbish and shallow Mr. Wilde thought high class people are. There are also many examples of gender based satire. The first of these is that only men can have a Bunburry. This is not true and shows that men think themselves more sophisticated than women. A second example of this type of satire is that women marry for a name. This is a satire because it ridicules women for being shallow. A final example of gender related satire is that women are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Satire On Drugs The drug abuse is the most serious issue not only in United States but other parts of the world too. The statistic has shown that 24.4million of American including teens from age of 12, had used an illegal drugs. The primary purpose of drug is a medicine which is to cure diseases, but people in United States nowadays, have misused the usage of drugs by consuming them without recommendation or supervision from the expert. People use drugs as a solution to reduce stress, to relieve the boredom, for enjoyment and also to forget all the dilemmas they have. Besides, drug also can act as an energy booster. For example, when students take drugs, they able to stay up all night to study and complete all of their assignments while for athletes they able to perform well during the competition and at the same time to stay fit. Sometimes, people use drugs as they are curious how the taste of drugs is and want to experiment the feeling of drugs. They think by taking drug only once will not give any bad consequence to them. It is true for some people, but others when they...show more content... This money should be allocated for the development of a country, education and also employment. People who are under influence of drugs can act aggressively which means they can commit violence without consciousness and intentions. They are also willing to do anything such as rob, steal or at a certain point kill innocent people as they want money to buy drugs. As a result, the rate of crime will increase, the environment is not safe enough for the community to live in and it can disrupt people's routine lives. Moreover, it can give negative perceptions to the investors from other countries and they are not willing to invest or make a deal with a country that has high social problems. The consequence is, it can retard the economy growth of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Effectively ushering change in society or pointing out faults that have existed and gone unnoticed can be a daunting task for any social commentator. Often, blandly protesting grievances or concerns can fall upon deaf ears and change can be slow or non–existent. However, Jonathan Swift in his pamphlet A Modest Proposal, uses clever, targeted, and ironic criticism to bring the social state of Ireland to the attention of indolent aristocrats. He accomplishes such criticism through satire, specifically Juvenalian satire. Swift's A Modest Proposal stands as an example of the type of satire that plays upon the audience's emotion by creating anger concerning the indifference of the voice created. He complements such criticism with sophisticated, ...show more content... This fact arouses anger, in that the audience realizes the proposer seems indifferent to the fact that he is proposing to murder thousands of children. Contrastingly, such morally unconventional solutions would not exist in a calmer, straight forward Horatian satire. Yet, even in evaluating how anger is emotionally imposed on the audience due to the absurdity of the proposal, it's impossible to disregard the role of humor. There are obvious elements of humor throughout the proposal and amusement in the very nature of the proposal is expected. However, any sense of humor abruptly disappears at the heart of the critism. When the proposer begins stating "I can think of no one objection that will possibly be raised against this proposal" the humor stops and the voice of Swift, as well as sharp criticism, begins. Although humor may be an integral part of the proposal and certainly a partial indication of the use of Horatian satire, the fact that humor isn't present throughout the whole proposal suggests that the use of hilarity is secondary. Rather, this contrast of humor and emotionally imposed irritation only helps to emphasize the role of anger. This is especially evident when one considers the irony that litters the humorous proposal. Swift's development of the absurd proposal Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Jonathan Swift, in his essay "A Modest Proposal", effectively utilizes an extended metaphor in order to convey his message that we must take action against widespread poverty. The satirical point employed suggests that poor children be eaten in order to decrease the surplus population, and is efficacious due to the fact that in such a terrible state of affairs, cannibalism can be logically defended as a viable solution. Swift's essay, written in 1729, clearly precedes the existing social programs in effect throughout much of the first world. However, the ominous reality is that Swift's essay can just as effectively be used as a comparison, albeit a figurative one, to modern day society, if our current welfare spending continues. Implicit within Swift's essay is a call for radical change to the inaction towards the poor that existed in his 18th century society. Though his call was thoroughly addressed by nearly every global government, the poor class has not shrunk in any way due to this, and in fact, government assistance has only worsened the problem. One must only examine the nature of the welfare state to see the oppression inherent within it. By definition, the welfare state is a means of giving assistance to those who do not produce an arbitrary amount of recorded capital for themselves. There is absolutely no encouragement to work, no obligation for productivity. Rather, the Heritage Foundation reported that only two of 80 tested welfare programs in America had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. "A Modest Proposal" is a social commentary written by Jonathan Swift, he uses techniques such as irony, satire, and sarcasm to mock the Irish government of his time. After reading Swift's essay half way through, one might not believe how graphic and shocking it's been written. He wrote a letter suggesting they sell the children of the poor to the wealthy families, as this will provide food, clothing, and will decrease the population. Throughout the letter he uses remarkable details as to how they should go about eating the children, treating them as livestock. The letter ends with a completely different tone when the author explains the absurdity of his proposal and instead suggests something a bit more realistic and humane like the wealthy should give up some of their luxuries. He uses a lot of thorough, literalized metaphors, and ironic and sarcasm techniques to a devastating effect. A Modest Proposal has been judged as an excellent work of rhetorical brilliancy, and it acquires readers critical attention up until now Swift exposes all the bizarre remarks and ideas he has been discussing about are all a humorous way to make fun of the way the government is run and how they are not serving their country. Afterwards he expresses a proper proposal of taking away some of the wealthier people's luxuries in order to help their economy. this essay explains the three techniques used in Swift's proposal, such as; Irony,Satire and Sarcasm. • 8. Incongruity: Examples Of Satire In Short Stories Satires in Short Stories If a short story is compared to a person, than satires are the gorgeous clothes worn on that person. Satires can make the story more vivid to attract the interest of the readers. Most of stories which use satires are reflect the problems in the real life. Therefore, they involve the social issues. This paper will identify what are satire and analysis three examples that satirize social issues in short stories. There are mainly three types of satire, and that are exaggeration, incongruity and parody. The forth story of Breaking Knees written by Zakaria Tamer uses incongruity to describe a unequal society in Syria which is preferential to the authorities. The thirty–ninth story of Breaking Knees written by Zakaria Tamer...show more content... People will always tell lies to calumniate the people who achieved success before them, this is relating to the humanity. This story uses exaggeration since in the real life, a stupid person cannot get success only depend on he or she is luck. "He went through on that purely superficial 'cram', and got compliments, too, while others, who knew a thousand times more than he, got plucked."(Luck,9) This is the using of incongruity. Compared with other people, Scoresby is so luck that he testing on the question he reviewed before. This sentence can prove the opinion of the narrator that Scoresby is lucky. "'Privately – his glory is an accident – just a product of incredible luck.'" (Luck, 14) This is the sentence that talked by Reverend and he wants others to believe him that Scoresby is a silly person. In addition, through "Well, sir, every one of them is a record of some shouting stupidity or other; and, taken together, they are proof that the very best thing in all this world that can befall a man is to be born lucky." (Luck, 27) In Christianity, people should believe that life is equal. "The clergyman at my left was an old acquaintance of mine – clergyman now, but had spent the first half of his life in the camp and field, and as an instructor in the military school at Woolwich." (Luck, 12) Trough sentence that clergyman said which is not proper for his identity, readers can know some of the words that he said may not certainly. That clergyman taught Scoresby a lot when Scoresby was in the school, but the Scoresby got famous and he as the teacher of Scoresby didn't achieve that famous. In people's mind, the people who have more intelligence should be more famous. However, in this story, the clergyman didn't become powerful and high status than Scoresby. Satire In Mark Twain's 'The War Prayer' Satire: a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule. In the early 1900s, talk was all about war, but war was not all talk. The United States was involved in multiple wars, and most people believed war to be a positive thing. Those with differing opinions were publicly shamed, and Mark Twain was not exactly shy about flaunting his opinion at first. His personal views of the goings–on in the world can be found in his writing, and "The War Prayer" was no different. Mark Twain's "The War Prayer" informs the reader of his negative views of war in multiple ways, and show how only dead men can speak out about their opinions. This is shown with the double meaning behind the "age stranger" quote, the capitalization of Throne, and using his personal quote about dead men. In "The War Prayer", the term "age stranger" shows the reader the strange man who walked into the church was actually dead. The story is set in a little town where the volunteer military men are heading off to war the next day, and this takes place during the church service. The entirety of the town is congregated there listening to the preacher's war prayer from the Old Testament, and then "An age stranger entered and moved with slow and noiseless step" (Twain, 1) and walked up to the front, pushed the preacher out of the way, and proceeded to inform the congregation of the unuttered part of their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Irony in Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal Rhetorical strategies are techniques, which are used to make one's writings more effective. The choice of rhetoric strategy depends on the type of subject being discussed. The effectiveness of appropriate strategy is directly related to the mood, which is to be created and maintained. For example if someone is criticizing the government, the tome is usually kept serious and Irony and satire are widely used in such writings. On the other hand while describing the recent developments in genetic engineering, the tone would be objective and humor or satire would be ineffective here. Jonathan Swift was famous for his sarcastic remarks on the government of his days and his works are full of satire and irony which appear to be humorous but...show more content... But I am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is very well known that they are every day dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, as fast as can be reasonably expected." Swift was not the only one who applied the technique of irony to convey his message more effectively, there were several other people who from time to time have made use of satire with irony to comment on or oppose to certain views and ideas. Martin Luther King Jr. was the champion of human rights who spoke extensively for the rights of African–Americans. He became an icon for the black community because of his highly emotional speeches and his writings, which focused on the subject of equal rights for black men and women in the United States. His "Letters from the Birmingham jail" are valued for their emotional content and their comments on his own activities. These letters cannot exactly be termed satirical or ironical in tone. In fact compared to Swift's works, King's letters would probably appear polite. But there are certain portions where he has used irony very effectively for example in his response to clergymen who had criticized King's activities, he said in his letter, "While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." • 11. Examples Of Satire In Modest Proposal Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift is an example of satirical writing. Satire means using humour to attack an idea or behaviour, ridiculing people or institution to effect change. Modest Proposal was written in 1729 in order to shock English society to be more aware of the unjust of politics towards the Irish community. Swift talks about the poverty–stricken Irish parents who cannot find close to decent jobs to support their kids, but they have to spend their time begging at passer–by for something to be able to feed their kids, whom eventually grow up to become thieves or emigrants. His solution to the extreme poverty is to render the children of Ireland from the poorer families and offer them to the richer families as food. By offering their...show more content... He only used the baby's analogy to explain the impossible burdens that the Irish Catholics have from the Protestants and, making their life hard. The essay describes the aggravation at the ineptitude of Ireland's politicians, the hypocrisy of the wealthy people the English people's tyranny and the degradation of the state of which so many Irish people live in. poverty seems to be a known struggle for most people in Ireland. So many parents cannot manage to get a decent job in order to support themselves and their kids. They spend their days begging at passers–by for more or food. Now the poverty drives the youth into a life of crime and slavery. When they are young, their parents struggle to get food on the table for them, and when they grow up, they repay their parents by getting into trouble with the law. With that, their standards of living don't improve even when the children grow up the cycle starts again. The modest proposal is an ironic attempt to 'find a fair, cheap and easy method for trying to help with the situation of the starting families into a more 'useful member of the commonwealth'. Swift comes with a solution and argues that the best way to get Ireland out of their degradation of poverty is to sell the children of the poor to a meat market at the late age of one, because converting adolescents to food would not work because their flesh is considered tough and lean. By selling these children they combine the problems of overpopulation and unemployment by sparing families the expense of having to feed another mouth, with the little money. But with one less mouth to feed and more money they will be able to have enough to help them for a few days. He then argues with statistics by stating that 120 000 infants are born every year in Ireland, 100 000 of those infants would be sold Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Analysis Of Lord Byron's Satire The Reasons for Byron's Satire Satire mocks a person or an event by using humor, irony, and exaggeration for the purpose to expose the true identity of someone or something. In the early 19th century, Lord Byron, also known as George Gordon, a leading figure in the Romantic Movement was heavily involved in satire because he saw great poets such as Walter Scott, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, andWilliam Wordsworthbetraying their principles. The poets also lost their passion towards the Romantic Movement. In addition, the usage of satire fits the personality of Byron because he always found his experiences in life humorous and never lost touch with reality, which allowed him to grow as an influential poet. Furthermore, Lord Byron's mission was to use satire to entertain his audience, make other Romantic poet sellouts look like fools, and expose public truths through humor. Byron wants to entertain his audience by using his good humor and charm to project his emotions. Byron is genuinely a good person, but he became intellectually dangerous due to the mistreatment he received from people in his early life. Moreover, his personality and attitude led him to the creation of the antihero or the Byronic hero. This defines him as a rebellious, arrogant, and antisocial person. Byron's strong character helps him express his feelings that will eventually unfold the truths in the world within his writing. RГ¶ssner quotes Byron describing his life by expressing, "if I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth it has stuck in my throat and spoilt my palate forever" (264). Describing that if he was born rich everything he knew and his prospective about life would have changed. We would never meet the famous Lord Byron that grew from his hard pass to become an important person in the literature world. Furthermore, Byron, while in college, wrote his first satirical poem teasing his critics. The turning point of his literary career is when he begins traveling. Byron gains new experiences and finds his calling towards literature; people become enthralled by his poems. Over time, his popularity increased to a point where the aristocracy and the literary world of London adored him. Ultimately, he found his voice in "Childe Harold's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Examples Of Satire Essay To the Department of Public Safety, The amount of car accidents that happen each year continue to increase. This continues to happen because of the number of people who consistently drive distracted everyday. This is due to a surplus of reasons, however, many fall subject to driving distracted because they prioritize their cell phones more than what is happening on the road in front of them. I was involved in a car accident a year ago when I was struck in my drivers side door by another person. The events after are a blur, but I remember losing control of my car, traveling over the median that divided the directions of traffic, spinning around, and then rolling over to end up with the passenger side of my car on the ground. When asked if he saw me traveling on the road before he made his turn, he responded, "I did not see her. I am so sorry that this happened." Although I am not exactly sure why he did not see me, I can assure you that by the way that he acted afterwards, looking at his phone, he was distracted while he was waiting to leave. This year in my english class, we are learning about the different satirical techniques authors use to criticize specific issues that are found alarming. Our class analyzed a satirical paper, "A Modest Proposal", by Dr. Jonathan Swift, who writes about the poverty throughout Ireland and England, providing a exaggerated solution to clear the problem. We were given an assignment to write a satirical essay based on the same format as Swift's proposal. I can assure you that my prompt was not a difficult one to brainstorm. Many people are guilty of driving without their full attention on the road. In my essay, I concluded that a proper solution would be to completely get rid of all cell phones, and any technological devices installed in cars that lead to distracted driving. This would solve many problems such as, safer transportation, money saved and used elsewhere because the nation would not need contribute so much to economic and societal loss, and alertness on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Examples Of Irony In A Modest Proposal Identify and close–read three examples of irony in "A Modest Proposal". How does each instance criticize social perceptions of the poor? In 'A Modest Proposal' the author, Jonathan Swift utilizes techniques such as satire, sarcasm, and irony to create a bigger picture to the reader. Within the poem, Swift not only presents a humorous approach to social and economic issues but does so in a well–constructed and carefully composed manner. A closer reading of the text reveals a deeper critical analysis of the social perceptions of the poor at the time. Through Swifts' use of irony, he creates a proposal that is so extremely absurd that some may believe the piece to be genuine. By taking an issue and providing a corrupt and merciless solution, the writer uses a unique approach to catch the attention of the people of Ireland and presents them a proposal they cannot ignore. Through the use of irony, Swift creates a poem that not only criticizes social perceptions of the poor but also remarks upon the issue without directly addressing the reader. Beginning with an examination of the subtitle, the stance of the narrator and his views of the poor are evident immediately. "...For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland, from being a Burden to their Parents or Country; and for making them beneficial to the Public." (Swift Para.1). This example is a distinct instance of irony; in which Swift uses such long, elaborate sentence to summarize his main proposition. By referring to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Satire in Swift's A Modest Proposal Essay Satire in Swift's A Modest Proposal Swift's aim of his proposal is to expose the cruelty of the rich landlords of Ireland, who were not being aware of the poverty and suffering of the Irish people. Swift's proposal is an attempt to suggest a remedy of Ireland's situation by shocking those who are powerful enough to inflict change on Ireland's appalling circumstances. In order to do this Swift creates an alter ego, a persona who puts forth the ghastly proposal but in a logical fashion. Swift uses a 'Juvenalian' sort of satire , a way of getting at the reader without targeting them directly. Swift tries to expose the reality of Ireland in a...show more content... The persona seems to be immoral and his ideas to 'help prevent children from becoming burdens to their parents' are irrational. His solution is unexpected and a little revolting as the benefits would be tasty meals for the rich and more money for the poor, as the solution would be for the poor to sell their children to the rich for them to devour, which with the situation of the rich landlords in Ireland, is literal. Swift is clever as he manages to lure the reader into a 'Fake sense of security', where the reader is subconsciously agreeing to the problems of how bad the situation in Ireland is and the reader is also agreeing with Asha Samrai the persona that something needs to be done about it. The proposal is written in a subdued tone, pleasant and realistic which makes his solution a shock and unexpected. This tone makes the persona seem moral at first and then you realise later on that he is in fact immoral, his ideas of children 'making good dishes' are hideous and barbaric. The poor are dehumanised by the persona, the parents being referred to as 'breeders', and babies when they are born are referred to as 'Dropped from their dams'. These terms are usually ways that animals are spoken of, therefore Swift is making a point that the poor are regarded Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Satire Examples In Literature Satire is a genre of literature that uses wit for the purpose of social criticism and mocks societal problems, such as in government, business and individuals to bring attention to certain follies, vices, and abuses. ("Satire Examples and Definition." ) The use of such a literary form serves to bring attention to issues in society that should be improved. Satire is diverse, complex and commonly characterized in 3 ways, Horatian, Juvenalian, and Menippean. Tomorrow's Bird" and "We ate the Children Last" are more of the Menippean style as they attack the mental attitudes rather than specific individuals or entities. (Mennipean Satire) Satire, when used correctly is not about what is written but what is implied. Illuminating things in human nature that need to be improved, such as the pursuit of power and corruption as seen in "Tomorrow's Bird" and "We Ate the Children Last". "We ate the Children Last", the author uses satire to bring to light how easy in human society it is to forget the ugly aspects of our society by ignoring the issues and or hiding the problem away instead of dealing with the root cause. "Les Bons Samaritans, a lobby group for the poor, thought to apply this wondrous medical solution to a social problem. They suggested that the operation be made available to those receiving social assistance." • 17. Social Issues In A Modest Proposal "As a result Ireland was desperately poor country, overpopulation, full, as swift said, of beggars, wracked periodically by famine, heavily taxed, and with no say at all in its own affairs" by David Cody introduced in an introduction to A Modest Proposal. For the senior project I will be introducing the topic of poverty and class issue during A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. In 1729, Ireland was poverty–stricken and well under the impression that there wasn't people who were able to provide for themselves. The writer portrays a sense of sympathy and the need for a solution during the 18th century. As a result, Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal claiming an indication that in order for families in Ireland to live a standard, comfortable life style they would have to kill the children of the poor and feed them to Ireland's rich land–owners. This idea was brought up to view the fear of overpopulation, limiting rights of the Irish and the effect of penal laws during the 18th century and in A Modest Proposal. As Swift is satirically writing, he introduces an idea that brings up a religious aspect as well as a fear of over population in Ireland. Immediately, Jonathan Swift conveys a plain argument that is supposed to help the people of Ireland; with the intention of killing the Irish's children so that they can benefit the rest of the world. Furthermore, the writer speaks upon the matter at hand "there are more children born in Roman Catholic countries about ...show more content... • 18. Examples Of Jonathan Swift Satire Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1667. As a young man, he felt bitter regarding the state of affair of the English society. His career as a writer emerged with his work– "A Tale of a Tub" and "The Battle of Books". In the preface to "The Battle of Books" Swift remarks that "Satire is a sort of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended by it". Satires can be divided into two categories– personal and general. A personalsatire is an attack on a person or group of people whom the writer does not like for personal or public reasons. So he ridicules those traits of his target that are objectionable. One of the famous personal satires is Dryden's "Mac Flecknoe". In a general satire, the target is the vices of the mankind and not a particular individual. In his works, he has targeted not the individuals but what he detested in his contemporary society or what he considered to be the general foibles of human nature. In these satires, the speaker is not Swift himself but some persona that he has assumed for the occasion. This character has been employed by Swift for moral judgment and critical observations. Gulliver dwells upon the conflict between High– Heels and Low Heels; the reader recognizes that this is a satirical account between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Today I will be analyzing an Australian Political cartoon targeting a current issue– Tony Abbott and his Asylum seeker policy I have chosen a relevant cartoon by Cathy Wilcox, published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 22nd of December 2013. I'll firstly outline the cartoon's contextual information, after which I'll explore the satirical elements used by Wilcox to persuade the readers of her perspective. Secondly, Wilcox uses incongruity through visual elements to further her views. Incongruity is most evident when focusing on the man sellinglottery tickets to the refugees, with the prize being accepted into Australia. This lottery concept is bizarrely, yet intentionally associated with the refugees, highlighting how they are manipulated with false promises. The facial expressions and symbols used enhance the cartoon's incongruity. The ticket seller's immensely large grin suggests there is more to this lottery offer than meets the eye, alongside his remark "Get your lottery tickets here!" an unusual phrase to hear in refugee areas. The sign written with Australia, $5000.... states the price of a lottery ticket though the ellipses imply that a greater cost is involved. They are gambling with money as well as taking big risks with their lives with no guarantee of safely reaching Australia. The refugees' anxious expressions show their realization of the dangers but their disparity forces them to take these risks. Finally, to the effectiveness of this cartoon. Overall the cartoon is very effective. It is eye–catching and it's use of parody and incongruities in conjunction with the visual elements effectively portray the cartoonist's perspective of Tony Abbott. It successfully reveals Abbott's genuine double –sided views on overseas refugees and orphans whilst Get more content on HelpWriting.net
