Personal Statement On Volunteerism
Community Love
Volunteerism positively reflects an individual's character, showing others of their benevolence and compassion. Organizations such as Family Career
and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) as a whole is very community based, meaning we partake in and organize activities that positively affect
the school, its students, and the rest of the community. As President of FCCLA, I participate in numerous community service and community
awareness activities. FCCLA has done numerous community projects, such as food drives, coat drives, and toiletry drives, and eventually all of these
items were given to the homeless whom we have also volunteered to feed. Moreover, the numerous volunteer opportunities that I have grasped have
helped me to establish what career path I want to take in the future, nursing. Doing community service helped me realize that I want to spend my life
helping others, doing things that could make a sick person's day better and help them to stay positive as they heal.
In order to become a nurse practitioner, I not only...show more content...
Illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are usually the most common, most of which plague the families of the south.
Thankfully, I was able to shadow a nurse practitioner, Dr. Sandra Lott, during the summer of 2016. Dr. Lott spends time away from her job to plan
and participate in community events that allow her to speak to the people most dear to her about the health risks of common diseases that are
prominent throughout her community. I wish to do the same, and educate families on these diseases and how they can avoid them. I should be
considered for the Hey Love! Scholarship because it could help me spend less time and money paying off loans and more time helping people learn
more about their healthier options, so they may live long and prosperous

As an individual I believe that I exemplify the ideals of volunteerism and humanities as not just giving back to your community in a positive manner but
learning from these experiences. The individuals that I encounter grant me the opportunity to engage with them. A person can learn so much from
somebody in just a few short moments. For instance, one day as I was giving back to my community by volunteering at a food drive, a man walked up
and told me "if you learn anything from me, it is go to school and graduate." These words resonated within me because not too many people can admit
that they have made mistakes in their lives and be humble enough to educate me on the mistakes they made in their life.
As a young adult, I cherish the opportunities

Most colleges look for extracurricular activities such as students who have participated in their share of volunteerism as it helps recognize students
apart from the large number of applicants who have applied as well. So if schools automatically had kids volunteer then there would be a better chance
(with their GPA's) to be accepted into the college they prefer. As well, the schools that support the students would have a proud reputation and strong
educational ratings. It also helps students develop civic and social responsibility skills and become more responsible in the long run. Therefore these
actions allow students to take what they've comprehended and use it apart from the classroom, learning that what they have learned can be used in

Volunteerism Personal Statement
Through my volunteer abroad experiences in Peru and Costa Rica, I developed cultural sensitivity and awareness, and I fostered my passion for
volunteerism. Recognizing that I am privileged to live in a society with proper water, heat, and healthcare system, I realize my responsibility as a
global citizen that I need to give back my skills, knowledge, and compassion to underprivileged communities around the world. During my
undergraduate years, I coordinated and participated in volunteer abroad programs to Peru and Costa Rica, in which I served as leader and a Korean
/Spanish translator. I am not only a motivated leader but also a good team worker who is harmonious and collaborative to achieve the common goal
together. I can envision myself

Volunteering Essay
Volunteering is offering to do something without being forced to. Volunteering can have lasting effects on not only those who get help, but it can also
help the individual volunteering. For some organizations, volunteering is the only way that they are able to continue. By offering time to help
volunteers are often helping maintain lives because they are helping others who can not help themselves. Volunteeringeffects many individuals, no
matter how important the work may seem. "In the United States in 2009 it was documented that 63.4 million individuals found that it was important to
volunteer in some way" (Woods). Although many groups benefit from volunteering, there is large benefits noticed in religious groups and educational

These open voids can be filled by volunteering. Along with that even though there are sometimes one time volunteers, there are also individuals that
are always willing to put themselves out there and not just looking for the gratitude during important times. Volunteering can have a huge impact on
your community. There is options to volunteer in your community by doing a variety of things. There is a option to donate your time cleaning up in
your local area. Another way that their is a option to donate your time is by helping other individuals doing tasks that they might not be able to
perform on their own. By helping those who are less fortunate than, not only are you doing the right thing, but you are also setting a good example
for others to follow. Many individuals may not be able to do things on their own or might not be able to afford the basic things that contribute to
survival and by volunteering it opens the opportunity to make these things available to them. There is such a high demand for volunteers for so many
different things. This high demand has caused people to look into easier and more accessible ways for people to volunteer. There are options to
volunteer through so many ways. There is now ways to micro–volunteering. "By micro–volunteering it allows you to volunteer small amounts of time
to do such things as setting up a ride for someone and offers the availability to do this volunteering from your cell phone" (Woods).

Speech About Volunteering
"The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others", very true words written by Mahatma Gandhi. Volunteering has always
been something I loved doing. When a teacher needed help, I was the first to raise my hand. If someone needed their kid watched, I was the girl for
the job. However, one particular instance always stuck with me. My story starts out like most other stories, my FFA Advisor, Mr. Kuster signed us up
to pack buddy packs for kids around Missouri at the Missouri State Fair. The event had a cute name, "Food Insecurity Day", and we got T–shirts and a
Scavenger Hunt to complete. When "Food Insecurity Day" rolled around, myself and other FFA Members from around the state gathered around to
listen to how what we were doing was really making a difference. Of course, you always hear about the difference you are going to make, but
sometimes it can be hard to believe. The day went fast. We washed our hands quickly and put on hair nets. We packed multiple items for the children,
such as cereal bars, peanut bars, and fruit cups. We packed over 50,000 meals that day! Then I went on to have fun with my friends and did not really
think about it anymore. School started next week. My new cheer coach had asked if anyone would be interested in volunteering their time to help the
middle school squad learning the cheers. Being Varsity Cheer Co–Captain, I was more than happy to oblige. It was a no–brainer to help out because
cheer is one of my favorite

In order to address the impact that volunteerism has on our society i should probably start off by explaining to you exactly what the definition is, and
what it means to me personally. The definition of volunteerism is "the use or involvement of volunteer labor, especially in community services." I
believe that volunteering is offering up your own time, knowing that you will not get a direct benefit from what you are doing and asking for little to
nothing in return. A reason I feel that I need to go into more detail about how I personally see the act of volunteering is because I have watched
programs that offer these sort of opportunities turn from fun ways to better yourselves and help others around you, to being seen as chores or
requirements that students and children get pushed into and never want to do again. So who benefits from volunteer work? While initially it may seem
that whatever cause you are choosing to dedicate your time to is the answer, if you look a little deeper you will find that the answer is much more
complex than that. The community at large definitely benefits from volunteers; but volunteer work is a major part of personal development as well.
Working with others can improve your social skills, encourage both personal and professional growth and contribute to a feeling that you are part of a
bigger picture. Often when one sets out to volunteer in the community they quickly learn that the take–away is so much bigger than what they are

Big Society Volunteerism
Company
More than one hundred years ago, the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC) was founded in New York City at a time when a cancer
diagnosis meant certain death. The goal of the organization was to raise public awareness about the disease. Eventually, the name of the organization
was changed to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the mission evolved from solely awareness to also include research, programs, and fundraisers.
The modern ACS is a "nationwide, community–based health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem," according to its
website.
Through its fundraising and community educating mechanisms, the society hopes to eradicate cancer and celebrate more birthdays. As one of the world's

"The rewards of individual engagement in volunteering: a missing dimension of the Big Society" notes that motives for volunteers vary by age group.
Younger volunteers, like teenagers, are inspired to volunteer in order to gain benefits for a career.
According to "The Motivations to Volunteer: Theoretical and Practical Considerations," there are six main motives for volunteerism, and of the six the
most important for young people – besides career – are values, understanding, and enhancement. A study of corporate volunteerism found that between
one third to one half of the people participating who volunteered in their field improved in key areas of their job.
The international study in "Motivations, Death Anxiety, and Empathy in Hospice Volunteers in France" shows that people with high death anxiety are
less likely to succeed and less likely to stay committed to hospice volunteering. While volunteers with low death anxiety are more likely to commit long
term to the hospice volunteer

I love to volunteer because it constantly teaches me something new about people, about cooperation, about compassion, and about myself. In helping
others, I am reminded that we are all in this together and we need to remember to support each other. Life has so much to offer if we remember look
beyond ourselves. I chose to volunteer with a domestic violence safe house this semester. This experience has confirmed foe me personally that I have
indeed chosen the right major for myself.
Volunteerism, public engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and
society. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact andsocial change, it's important for us to remember that before
we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the difficulty and seriousness of the
social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about. Not only do we need to understand the 'issue' or 'societal problem' that many
people face and are impacted by every day, but we need to meet and work alongside those whose daily realities are shaped by injustices, while not
creating any divides or barriers in the process. Everyday people are affected by the issues that organizations fight for or against, and once we realize
how people–centered things like advocacy, outreach and service are, I believe young people will realize their call to action and their

The Pros And Cons Of Volunteerism
5.Conclusion
With this thesis I wanted to create a broader view on the systems behind all the critiques on volunteerism projects in order to contribute to projects that
are both beneficial for volunteers as well as for host communities. The theoretical aim of this thesis was to contribute to the scientific debate on how
volunteerism projects impact volunteers and host communities, through showing how this impact is influenced by processes of liminality and
Othering. On top of that, I wanted to question the notion of "giving aid" as the starting point of volunteerism projects. The story represented two
groups; volunteers and host communities, who joined volunteerism projects with good intentions. Some, however, unaware of the unintended
consequences and how their expectations would work out.
5.1The unintended consequences of the desire to help
It all started with one group of volunteers who had a specific interest in improving the waste–management in Bandung and another group of volunteers
that wanted to teach English to children in the same region. They both found volunteering project from AIESEC that focussed on these interests and
made their way to Indonesia. But, despite the focus of these projects on waste management and teaching English on paper, the projects turn out to be
focussed on something as well in reality; the...show more content...
Both volunteers as well as host communities have to become aware of the Self in relation to the Other and let go of the connotations they have attached
to each other, in order to create space for cultural understanding through entering a liminal world between cultures (Rabinow 1977). This creation of
cultural understanding is, next to one of the aims of most volunteerism project, necessary for the creation of a volunteerism project that benefits host
communities and volunteers at the same

"Volunteers are not paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless."– Sherry Anderson (Volunteering Quotes: Finest Quotes). On
average, when people think about community service, they assume that volunteering is just 'hours we need to be able to graduate' and that is it.
Community service is more than just hours; community service is based on the acts performed by someone with the purpose of helping or bringing
benefits to his or her community. People frequently compare community service as a punishment since it is often offered to small–time offenders as an
alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service is the vital force to many communities since they depend on the service made by the

Volunteering in your community helps solve many dilemmas in your community that descend through the eyes of government and social agencies
(Everything you ever wanted to know about volunteering). Discussing about volunteering to teenagers should be the first step for a better life, since
teenagers are the future of tomorrow and they will leave a mark from yesterday. Volunteering has been such an important matter, that schools in many
countries around the world established that 12th grade students will need certain hours of community service in order to graduate. But the frequent
answers all the schools are getting are "Why do I need to volunteer? I have better things to do!" What people are forgetting is that each one of them is
part of a community, a community that is not perfect and that the government sometimes forgets about their problems or needs, because obviously the
government needs to take care of other things that require more attention. People are not only helping others, they are also helping themselves
(Volunteering). Volunteering is not a new subject now, but people did not perceive it before because as time goes by, volunteering is becoming more
and more popular since each year more people volunteer. Volunteering began around the early 19th century since America was experimenting with the
Great Awakening. The Great Awakening was a period in which the importance of the church was slowly dying and instead the

Essay On Volunteerism
Before explaining the concepts of liminality and Othering and their connection to volunteerism, I will first explain how volunteerism is scientifically
defined and approached. The term volunteerism is a coalescence from the words volunteering and tourism. Stebbins and Graham (2004) define
volunteerism as volunteering "in an organized way to undertake holidays that might involve the aiding or alleviating the material poverty of some
groups in society, the restoration of certain environments or research into aspects of society or environment (Stebbins and Graham 2004, 211).
According to Beigbeder (1991) and Clark (1978), a volunteer is someone who voluntarily offers personal services, time and skills for the benefit of
others. Stebbins and...show more content...
The concept of liminality was first introduced in the field of anthropology by Van Gennep (1909). He described rites of passage in which the people
who are undergoing the ritual are stripped of their social status at the beginning after which they are in a liminal period of transition until they get
back their new status at the end. After Van Gennep's work on the concept there was a long period of silence around it until Turner (1967) drew on Van
Gennep's ideas for his interpretation of liminality. He started to apply liminality to small–scale societies stating that liminal individuals or entities are
"neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremony" (Turner 1967,
95). According to him, there are liminal communities within which all community members are equal. An example of such a community is the
hippies who, according to Turner, freed themselves from the ruling social structure. He defines liminality as following: "Liminality may perhaps be
regarded as the Nay to all positive structural assertions, but as in some sense the source of them all, and, more than that, as a realm of pure possibility
whence novel configurations of ideas and relations may arise" (Turner 1967: 97). This connects to the work of Rabinow (1977) again, in which he
describes how the informants of an anthropologist

Benefits of Volunteering
Benefits of volunteering
19 October 2005
Volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on your community. But did you know that it can have many benefits for you too? Here are some
reasons to volunteer:
Learn or develop a new skill
Volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a newskill. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Live as if you
were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." It is never too late to learn new skills and no reason why you should stop adding to your
knowledge just because you are in employment or have finished education. Planning and implementing a major fundraising event can develop goal
setting, planning and budgeting skills. Supervising and training...show more content...
Sometimes a volunteer experience can lead you to something you never even thought about or help you discover a hobby or interest you were unaware
of. You can strengthen your personal/professional mission and vision by exploring opportunities and expanding your horizons.
New experiences
Volunteeringis a brilliant way to get life experience. Whether you build a library or mail flyers to raise awareness for a local charity, you will
experience the real world through hands–on work. This guide section has established that volunteers can do almost anything and with the new
millenium has dawned an era of infinite volunteer opportunities. For example, it is possible to volunteer in developing countries and see the direct
impact of your actions on some of the most vulnerable people of the world. You could skydive for charity, a chance to experience the ultimate thrill and
raise funds to help the charity continue its work.
Meeting a diverse range of people
Volunteering brings together a diverse range of people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Both the recipients of your volunteer efforts and your
co–workers can be a rich source of inspiration and an excellent way to develop your interpersonal skills. Volunteering also offers an incredible
networking opportunity. Not only will you develop lasting personal and professional relationships but it is also a great way to learn about people from
all walks of life,

Volunteering is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life. By showing kindness, I was impacted in a way, which I was not

By showing compassion and kindness, not only does it affect another person, but it will reflect into your unique characteristics and behaviours. It

It honestly was not an inconvenience, and provided with the opportunity again, I would jump at the chance. Truthfully, visiting Freemason's home
made my day.
For the second visit to the elderly home, I was paired with three men, and two of my peers. We discussed their lives and ours, over an extremely
intricate puzzle. It was great to talk to someone that was not my age, and was wise beyond their years. One man talked about his job as an engineer,
and asked about what career path we were considering pursuing. Slightly before our departure from the home, one man show us a picture of his
deceased wife from his wallet. As he told us about her, through his trembling voice, you could tell the immense love he felt for her, and the pain he was
in. We thanked him for feeling strong enough to share it with us, and since then he's stayed imprinted on my memory. It was a beautiful story, and
my heart felt warm afterwards. The food bank was one of my favourite STRIVE afternoons. We were introduced to the initiative and their message,
and immediately got to work. We had certain foods requirements for each box and needed to work efficiently in order to complete the assigned
tasks. While packing the boxes, I could reflect on the change we were making in those families lives. They relied on this food, and I couldn't help but
feel like I was directly contributing to their lives. I may not have seen them or even known them, but I knew I was helping,

The Importance of Volunteerism Essay
In social science, economists argue that people act in their personal best interest; in contrast, volunteers willingly share their talents and provide
services to others with no obligation or any incentive for personal gain. Volunteers have made significant contributions to charitable, educational, and
worthwhile causes within a small community to foreign countries with no boundaries. Undeniably, the exchange of thoughts and experiences are
extended through the volunteer process. With flexibility in time and summer vacations, university students are a large majority in the volunteer force

Unquestionably QDC had been a mediator to my temporary liberation from the demanding academic work deadlines and hectic exam schedules. In
addition to my involvement on campus, I spent my sophomore summer as a volunteer in Kenya. During this trip I had the privilege to meet new friends
around the world, exchanged thoughts on social issues with others, and witnessed the exotic African culture. Indeed, involvement in volunteerism and
additional activities provide a source of stress relief, expand connections to people with common interest, and enhance the memories of the university
student life. A larger sense of community is encouraged from student volunteers and their contribution in their extracurricular activities. My roles as a
university student volunteer in the medical field had leaded me into a more caring person with high intention to contribute to the society for a better
overall being in the district. At the Kingston General Hospital, I put in efforts to interact with a diverse group of patients from children to seniors by
providing meal assistance, company, and care. In addition, I tried to reach out to the minor disability group in the Kingston community by dedicating
every Monday mornings at downtown Kingston H'art Studio to assist Down syndrome adults with learning of literacy and coping with changes in their
lives. Furthermore, my travelling abroad to Kenya in summer 2008 with a group of university students were planned to assist the process of improving

Volunteerism, in its conceptual form, includes the individual or collective efforts of willing individuals, known as volunteers, to act in ways which
work toward the betterment of oneself, other individuals, communities, and/or society. This definition remains subjective in its ambiguity regarding the
meaning of betterment, as well as in the sense that the means to bettering oneself may be in direct opposition to the means necessary to better another
individual or society. Despite the subjectivity of this definition, this general description of volunteerism is necessary for communication...show more

In order to adequately understand the meaning of volunteerism in the United States, one must take into consideration the cultural baggage which these
Americans, called volunteers, bring into their designated volunteer assignments. The American culture stresses individualism; the attitudes of 'being all
that one can be' and the question of 'how will this benefit me' pervade the American individualistic mind. Without placing a value judgment on these
attitudes, they do not coincide with the intended goals and values of volunteerism, unless our definition of volunteering has taken on a new meaning.
The Newsweek article glamorizes volunteerism; it advertises the material and personal benefits that one can receive from volunteering. While I hope
volunteers will apply themselves wholeheartedly enough to their task, one's decision to volunteer should not come out of a need for
selfgratification or selfaffirmation. It should also not come out of a desire to be able to add something to our repertoire of charitable
activities about which we can brag. The truth is, volunteering is not always a joy ride that is mutually enjoyable; it is hard work. Though many times a
volunteer will feel an incredible amount of satisfaction after witnessing the fruits of his/her efforts in helping to better someone's life, this does not
characterize every situation. As a result, volunteers will not always boost their egos, and they will not

An Essay On Volunteerism
"To volunteer" is to carry out acts for the benefit of others without a physical obligation to do so. "To be a volunteer" is to willingly devote your time
and resources to a cause, a person, or a group of people. The act of volunteering is one of the basic expressions of human behavior, through which
individuals align their interests with those of their respective communities and together assist in achieving worthwhile social progress. By volunteering
individuals demonstrate their involvement in society, their individualism, and at the same time – their insect–like unison.
Firstly, through volunteering individuals show their capacity for understanding others; their empathy. For instance: when you see a crying child on the

Personal Statement On Volunteerism

  • 1. Personal Statement On Volunteerism Community Love Volunteerism positively reflects an individual's character, showing others of their benevolence and compassion. Organizations such as Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) as a whole is very community based, meaning we partake in and organize activities that positively affect the school, its students, and the rest of the community. As President of FCCLA, I participate in numerous community service and community awareness activities. FCCLA has done numerous community projects, such as food drives, coat drives, and toiletry drives, and eventually all of these items were given to the homeless whom we have also volunteered to feed. Moreover, the numerous volunteer opportunities that I have grasped have helped me to establish what career path I want to take in the future, nursing. Doing community service helped me realize that I want to spend my life helping others, doing things that could make a sick person's day better and help them to stay positive as they heal. Dr. Lott spends time away from her job to plan and participate in community events that allow her to speak to the people most dear to her about the health risks of common diseases that are prominent throughout her community. I wish to do the same, and educate families on these diseases and how they can avoid them. I should be considered for the Hey Love! Scholarship because it could help me spend less time and money paying off loans and more time helping people learn more about their healthier options, so they may live long and prosperous Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. As an individual I believe that I exemplify the ideals of volunteerism and humanities as not just giving back to your community in a positive manner but learning from these experiences. The individuals that I encounter grant me the opportunity to engage with them. A person can learn so much from somebody in just a few short moments. For instance, one day as I was giving back to my community by volunteering at a food drive, a man walked up and told me "if you learn anything from me, it is go to school and graduate." These words resonated within me because not too many people can admit that they have made mistakes in their lives and be humble enough to educate me on the mistakes they made in their life. As a young adult, I cherish the opportunities Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Most colleges look for extracurricular activities such as students who have participated in their share of volunteerism as it helps recognize students apart from the large number of applicants who have applied as well. So if schools automatically had kids volunteer then there would be a better chance (with their GPA's) to be accepted into the college they prefer. As well, the schools that support the students would have a proud reputation and strong educational ratings. It also helps students develop civic and social responsibility skills and become more responsible in the long run. Therefore these actions allow students to take what they've comprehended and use it apart from the classroom, learning that what they have learned can be used in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Volunteerism Personal Statement Through my volunteer abroad experiences in Peru and Costa Rica, I developed cultural sensitivity and awareness, and I fostered my passion for volunteerism. Recognizing that I am privileged to live in a society with proper water, heat, and healthcare system, I realize my responsibility as a global citizen that I need to give back my skills, knowledge, and compassion to underprivileged communities around the world. During my undergraduate years, I coordinated and participated in volunteer abroad programs to Peru and Costa Rica, in which I served as leader and a Korean /Spanish translator. I am not only a motivated leader but also a good team worker who is harmonious and collaborative to achieve the common goal together. I can envision myself Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Volunteering Essay Volunteering is offering to do something without being forced to. Volunteering can have lasting effects on not only those who get help, but it can also help the individual volunteering. For some organizations, volunteering is the only way that they are able to continue. By offering time to help volunteers are often helping maintain lives because they are helping others who can not help themselves. Volunteeringeffects many individuals, no matter how important the work may seem. "In the United States in 2009 it was documented that 63.4 million individuals found that it was important to volunteer in some way" (Woods). Although many groups benefit from volunteering, there is large benefits noticed in religious groups and educational ...show more content... These open voids can be filled by volunteering. Along with that even though there are sometimes one time volunteers, there are also individuals that are always willing to put themselves out there and not just looking for the gratitude during important times. Volunteering can have a huge impact on your community. There is options to volunteer in your community by doing a variety of things. There is a option to donate your time cleaning up in your local area. Another way that their is a option to donate your time is by helping other individuals doing tasks that they might not be able to perform on their own. By helping those who are less fortunate than, not only are you doing the right thing, but you are also setting a good example for others to follow. Many individuals may not be able to do things on their own or might not be able to afford the basic things that contribute to survival and by volunteering it opens the opportunity to make these things available to them. There is such a high demand for volunteers for so many different things. This high demand has caused people to look into easier and more accessible ways for people to volunteer. There are options to volunteer through so many ways. There is now ways to micro–volunteering. "By micro–volunteering it allows you to volunteer small amounts of time to do such things as setting up a ride for someone and offers the availability to do this volunteering from your cell phone" (Woods). • 6. Speech About Volunteering "The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others", very true words written by Mahatma Gandhi. Volunteering has always been something I loved doing. When a teacher needed help, I was the first to raise my hand. If someone needed their kid watched, I was the girl for the job. However, one particular instance always stuck with me. My story starts out like most other stories, my FFA Advisor, Mr. Kuster signed us up to pack buddy packs for kids around Missouri at the Missouri State Fair. The event had a cute name, "Food Insecurity Day", and we got T–shirts and a Scavenger Hunt to complete. When "Food Insecurity Day" rolled around, myself and other FFA Members from around the state gathered around to listen to how what we were doing was really making a difference. Of course, you always hear about the difference you are going to make, but sometimes it can be hard to believe. The day went fast. We washed our hands quickly and put on hair nets. We packed multiple items for the children, such as cereal bars, peanut bars, and fruit cups. We packed over 50,000 meals that day! Then I went on to have fun with my friends and did not really think about it anymore. School started next week. My new cheer coach had asked if anyone would be interested in volunteering their time to help the middle school squad learning the cheers. Being Varsity Cheer Co–Captain, I was more than happy to oblige. It was a no–brainer to help out because cheer is one of my favorite Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. In order to address the impact that volunteerism has on our society i should probably start off by explaining to you exactly what the definition is, and what it means to me personally. The definition of volunteerism is "the use or involvement of volunteer labor, especially in community services." I believe that volunteering is offering up your own time, knowing that you will not get a direct benefit from what you are doing and asking for little to nothing in return. A reason I feel that I need to go into more detail about how I personally see the act of volunteering is because I have watched programs that offer these sort of opportunities turn from fun ways to better yourselves and help others around you, to being seen as chores or requirements that students and children get pushed into and never want to do again. So who benefits from volunteer work? While initially it may seem that whatever cause you are choosing to dedicate your time to is the answer, if you look a little deeper you will find that the answer is much more complex than that. The community at large definitely benefits from volunteers; but volunteer work is a major part of personal development as well. Working with others can improve your social skills, encourage both personal and professional growth and contribute to a feeling that you are part of a bigger picture. Often when one sets out to volunteer in the community they quickly learn that the take–away is so much bigger than what they are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Big Society Volunteerism Company More than one hundred years ago, the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC) was founded in New York City at a time when a cancer diagnosis meant certain death. The goal of the organization was to raise public awareness about the disease. Eventually, the name of the organization was changed to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the mission evolved from solely awareness to also include research, programs, and fundraisers. The modern ACS is a "nationwide, community–based health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem," according to its website. Through its fundraising and community educating mechanisms, the society hopes to eradicate cancer and celebrate more birthdays. As one of the world's ...show more content... "The rewards of individual engagement in volunteering: a missing dimension of the Big Society" notes that motives for volunteers vary by age group. Younger volunteers, like teenagers, are inspired to volunteer in order to gain benefits for a career. According to "The Motivations to Volunteer: Theoretical and Practical Considerations," there are six main motives for volunteerism, and of the six the most important for young people – besides career – are values, understanding, and enhancement. A study of corporate volunteerism found that between one third to one half of the people participating who volunteered in their field improved in key areas of their job. The international study in "Motivations, Death Anxiety, and Empathy in Hospice Volunteers in France" shows that people with high death anxiety are less likely to succeed and less likely to stay committed to hospice volunteering. While volunteers with low death anxiety are more likely to commit long term to the hospice volunteer Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. I love to volunteer because it constantly teaches me something new about people, about cooperation, about compassion, and about myself. In helping others, I am reminded that we are all in this together and we need to remember to support each other. Life has so much to offer if we remember look beyond ourselves. I chose to volunteer with a domestic violence safe house this semester. This experience has confirmed foe me personally that I have indeed chosen the right major for myself. Volunteerism, public engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and society. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact andsocial change, it's important for us to remember that before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the difficulty and seriousness of the social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about. Not only do we need to understand the 'issue' or 'societal problem' that many people face and are impacted by every day, but we need to meet and work alongside those whose daily realities are shaped by injustices, while not creating any divides or barriers in the process. Everyday people are affected by the issues that organizations fight for or against, and once we realize how people–centered things like advocacy, outreach and service are, I believe young people will realize their call to action and their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. The Pros And Cons Of Volunteerism 5.Conclusion With this thesis I wanted to create a broader view on the systems behind all the critiques on volunteerism projects in order to contribute to projects that are both beneficial for volunteers as well as for host communities. The theoretical aim of this thesis was to contribute to the scientific debate on how volunteerism projects impact volunteers and host communities, through showing how this impact is influenced by processes of liminality and Othering. On top of that, I wanted to question the notion of "giving aid" as the starting point of volunteerism projects. The story represented two groups; volunteers and host communities, who joined volunteerism projects with good intentions. Some, however, unaware of the unintended consequences and how their expectations would work out. 5.1The unintended consequences of the desire to help It all started with one group of volunteers who had a specific interest in improving the waste–management in Bandung and another group of volunteers that wanted to teach English to children in the same region. They both found volunteering project from AIESEC that focussed on these interests and made their way to Indonesia. But, despite the focus of these projects on waste management and teaching English on paper, the projects turn out to be focussed on something as well in reality; the...show more content... Both volunteers as well as host communities have to become aware of the Self in relation to the Other and let go of the connotations they have attached to each other, in order to create space for cultural understanding through entering a liminal world between cultures (Rabinow 1977). • 11. "Volunteers are not paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless."– Sherry Anderson (Volunteering Quotes: Finest Quotes). On average, when people think about community service, they assume that volunteering is just 'hours we need to be able to graduate' and that is it. Community service is more than just hours; community service is based on the acts performed by someone with the purpose of helping or bringing benefits to his or her community. People frequently compare community service as a punishment since it is often offered to small–time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service is the vital force to many communities since they depend on the service made by the volunteers...show more content... Volunteering in your community helps solve many dilemmas in your community that descend through the eyes of government and social agencies (Everything you ever wanted to know about volunteering). Discussing about volunteering to teenagers should be the first step for a better life, since teenagers are the future of tomorrow and they will leave a mark from yesterday. Volunteering has been such an important matter, that schools in many countries around the world established that 12th grade students will need certain hours of community service in order to graduate. But the frequent answers all the schools are getting are "Why do I need to volunteer? I have better things to do!" What people are forgetting is that each one of them is part of a community, a community that is not perfect and that the government sometimes forgets about their problems or needs, because obviously the government needs to take care of other things that require more attention. People are not only helping others, they are also helping themselves (Volunteering). Volunteering is not a new subject now, but people did not perceive it before because as time goes by, volunteering is becoming more and more popular since each year more people volunteer. Volunteering began around the early 19th century since America was experimenting with the Great Awakening. The Great Awakening was a period in which the importance of the church was slowly dying and instead the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay On Volunteerism Before explaining the concepts of liminality and Othering and their connection to volunteerism, I will first explain how volunteerism is scientifically defined and approached. The term volunteerism is a coalescence from the words volunteering and tourism. Stebbins and Graham (2004) define volunteerism as volunteering "in an organized way to undertake holidays that might involve the aiding or alleviating the material poverty of some groups in society, the restoration of certain environments or research into aspects of society or environment (Stebbins and Graham 2004, 211). According to Beigbeder (1991) and Clark (1978), a volunteer is someone who voluntarily offers personal services, time and skills for the benefit of others. Stebbins and...show more content... The concept of liminality was first introduced in the field of anthropology by Van Gennep (1909). He described rites of passage in which the people who are undergoing the ritual are stripped of their social status at the beginning after which they are in a liminal period of transition until they get back their new status at the end. After Van Gennep's work on the concept there was a long period of silence around it until Turner (1967) drew on Van Gennep's ideas for his interpretation of liminality. He started to apply liminality to small–scale societies stating that liminal individuals or entities are "neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremony" (Turner 1967, 95). According to him, there are liminal communities within which all community members are equal. An example of such a community is the hippies who, according to Turner, freed themselves from the ruling social structure. He defines liminality as following: "Liminality may perhaps be regarded as the Nay to all positive structural assertions, but as in some sense the source of them all, and, more than that, as a realm of pure possibility whence novel configurations of ideas and relations may arise" (Turner 1967: 97). This connects to the work of Rabinow (1977) again, in which he describes how the informants of an anthropologist Get more content on HelpWriting.net

But did you know that it can have many benefits for you too? Here are some reasons to volunteer: Learn or develop a new skill Volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a newskill. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." • 16. Speech On Volunteering Volunteering "Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance." Volunteering is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life. By showing kindness, I was impacted in a way, which I was not expecting. Kindness is a universal language, understood in each country, comprehended through all boundaries. No acts of kindness are disregarded. By showing compassion and kindness, not only does it affect another person, but it will reflect into your unique characteristics and behaviours. It instils a positive mindset and allows us to spread the message. Volunteering is defined as, "a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task." (Oxford Dictionary, n.d.) In my opinion,...show more content... It honestly was not an inconvenience, and provided with the opportunity again, I would jump at the chance. Truthfully, visiting Freemason's home made my day. For the second visit to the elderly home, I was paired with three men, and two of my peers. We discussed their lives and ours, over an extremely intricate puzzle. It was great to talk to someone that was not my age, and was wise beyond their years. One man talked about his job as an engineer, and asked about what career path we were considering pursuing. Slightly before our departure from the home, one man show us a picture of his deceased wife from his wallet. As he told us about her, through his trembling voice, you could tell the immense love he felt for her, and the pain he was in. We thanked him for feeling strong enough to share it with us, and since then he's stayed imprinted on my memory. It was a beautiful story, and my heart felt warm afterwards. The food bank was one of my favourite STRIVE afternoons. We were introduced to the initiative and their message, and immediately got to work. We had certain foods requirements for each box and needed to work efficiently in order to complete the assigned tasks. While packing the boxes, I could reflect on the change we were making in those families lives. They relied on this food, and I couldn't help but feel like I was directly contributing to their lives. I may not have seen them or even known them, but I knew I was helping, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Unquestionably QDC had been a mediator to my temporary liberation from the demanding academic work deadlines and hectic exam schedules. In addition to my involvement on campus, I spent my sophomore summer as a volunteer in Kenya. During this trip I had the privilege to meet new friends around the world, exchanged thoughts on social issues with others, and witnessed the exotic African culture. Indeed, involvement in volunteerism and additional activities provide a source of stress relief, expand connections to people with common interest, and enhance the memories of the university student life. A larger sense of community is encouraged from student volunteers and their contribution in their extracurricular activities. My roles as a university student volunteer in the medical field had leaded me into a more caring person with high intention to contribute to the society for a better overall being in the district. At the Kingston General Hospital, I put in efforts to interact with a diverse group of patients from children to seniors by providing meal assistance, company, and care. In addition, I tried to reach out to the minor disability group in the Kingston community by dedicating every Monday mornings at downtown Kingston H'art Studio to assist Down syndrome adults with learning of literacy and coping with changes in their lives. Furthermore, my travelling abroad to Kenya in summer 2008 with a group of university students were planned to assist the process of improving Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Despite the subjectivity of this definition, this general description of volunteerism is necessary for communication...show more content... In order to adequately understand the meaning of volunteerism in the United States, one must take into consideration the cultural baggage which these Americans, called volunteers, bring into their designated volunteer assignments. The American culture stresses individualism; the attitudes of 'being all that one can be' and the question of 'how will this benefit me' pervade the American individualistic mind. Without placing a value judgment on these attitudes, they do not coincide with the intended goals and values of volunteerism, unless our definition of volunteering has taken on a new meaning. The Newsweek article glamorizes volunteerism; it advertises the material and personal benefits that one can receive from volunteering. While I hope volunteers will apply themselves wholeheartedly enough to their task, one's decision to volunteer should not come out of a need for selfgratification or selfaffirmation. It should also not come out of a desire to be able to add something to our repertoire of charitable activities about which we can brag. The truth is, volunteering is not always a joy ride that is mutually enjoyable; it is hard work. Though many times a volunteer will feel an incredible amount of satisfaction after witnessing the fruits of his/her efforts in helping to better someone's life, this does not characterize every situation. As a result, volunteers will not always boost their egos, and they will not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
