3. The castle is at the top of a
hill that overlooks the city. This
hill has the shape of a pyramid.
The castle was built from the
ancient years but the Venetians
made it as we can see it today.
It’s one of the most important
and best examples of castles’
architecture in Greece .
We cannot say with certainty
what was the form of the castle
in ancient times, but it is certain
that the walls existed. Remains
of ancient walls are still found
today on the sea side as well as
the western side of the castle.
4. The small, medieval port
has the shape of a
horseshoe with an opening
of 35 meters. Left and right
to the entrance there are
two towers. The port was
an important transportation
and commercial centre that
gave life to the city.
Transportation to Achaia,
Psathopyrgos and Patras
was made by small boats.
Also there was
transportation with small
boats from Nafpaktos to
Patra and from there to
Kryoneri.
5. The clock-bell of Nafpaktos is
located on the hill above the
port where the old town
is, 400 meters North of the
harbor.
It is very tall and impressive
and you can see it from a lot
of places around town . If you
go up the clock you can have
a great view of the town of
Nafpaktos and the Corinthian
Gulf.
Its building started in 1914
and the clock was restored in
1991.
6. We can see the statue of
Anemogiannis on the
right tower of the medieval
port.
Anemogiannis was a very
brave man who lost his life
as he was trying to set fire
on a Turkish ship outside
the port. Unfortunately the
Turks got him and killed
him.
Nowadays his statue is a
historic sightseeing in
Nafpaktos. The visitors
enjoy the view of the port
where they can see
Anemogiannis, too .
7. Miguel de Cervantes was
born in Madrid in 1547 .He
became a soldier in 1570
and was badly wounded in
the Battle of Lepanto. He
was captured by the Turks
in 1575 and spent five
years in prison. He was
freed in 1580 and returned
home. He died in 1616. We
can see his statue at the
west side of the port, at a
place named “Park of
Cervantes”.

10. The monasteries were always very
important for the region of
Nafpaktos.
The monasteries usually depend on
the personality of the monks and
their location. In the past they were
important because they offered
education to people and they also
were meeting points.
11. On the eastern side of Skala (a village near Nafpaktos) there
is a modern monastery dedicated to the Transfiguration of
Christ. The monastery was built in 1977. In the monastery
there is a beautiful church, an amazing yard full of trees
and flowers, the cells of the monks and a guest house.
Today there are over 25 monks who live there.

Panagia
Ambelakiotissa was
built in about 1456
A.D.
In the monastery you
can see the icon of the
Virgin Mary, the right
hand of St. Polykarpos,
and a beautiful
epitaph.
In 1880 the church
was extended and they
built cells for women.
There are some monks
who live there today.

15. Psani is the beautiful
western beach of
Nafpaktos . In this
beach there are lots of
restaurants and cafés.
The sea is crystal clear
and there are lots of
trees as well.
16. Psani has got lots of
playgrounds and in summer
all children are there.
Psani is the cleanest beach in
Nafpaktos. It has a blue flag.
This beautiful beach is 1 km
long with great plane trees
and luxurious hotels,
restaurants and cafes.
During the summer months it
is literally flooded by
vacationers who enjoy the
beach and water by day and a
cool walk on the beachside
road by night.
17. Grimpovo is the
beautiful eastern
beach of Nafpaktos.
At Grimpovo you
can find modern
hotels, cafés and
restaurants that
attract thousands of
tourists mainly in
the summer months.
There are also plane
trees and people
enjoy drinking their
coffee or having
lunch under them.
18. At Gribovo beach one can
enjoy the shade and dew of
the perennial plane trees
but also can find modern
hotels, cafés and
restaurants that attract

19. Hiliadou is one of the
many villages found in
the valley of Mornos.
There, the visitor can
see the small fishing
boat shelter and the
2km sand beach.
Nowadays it is a tourist
destination and people
from Greece and abroad
go there for their
holidays. Hiliadou has
small beautiful rooms-
to-let, some restaurants
and beach bars along
the beach.
20. It is a picturesque village
with wonderful beaches.
Every year thousands of
people visit it for their
summer or spring
holidays.
One of its characteristics
is its small harbour with
fish taverns.
The beach is 1km west of
the village and it has cold
but crystal clear waters.
On the other side of the
beach there is a beautiful
small lagoon.
21. Marathias is a small
picturesque fishing
village, on the western
coast of the Corinthian
Gulf, just 20 km from
Nafpaktos.
The beach of Marathias is
beautiful, and there is
also a boat shelter and
clean waters. Marathias
has small hotels and
rooms-to-let.
22. The village of Sergoula
has about 220 people and
one of the most amazing
beaches in the area.
There are some taverns,
restaurants, beach bars
and tourist services.
Every year thousands of
people visit it to enjoy
swimming and spend
their summer or spring
holidays there.
23. The beach of Platanitis is
located 7 km south west
of Nafpaktos. Platanitis is
a calm beach and has
clear waters, great for
swimming.
Many people have built
their houses in Platanitis
during the last few years.
At Platanitis you can
enjoy the sea, the view of
the bridge, the sunny
weather and the beautiful
sunsets.
