1. CYCLING IN THE TRAIN TRACKS
The cycling lane of the Flowers Riviera runs for 24 km along the layout of
the old railway, from San Lorenzo al Mare until Ospedaletti, and its
suitable whether to go biking - both for experts and for families - or to
practice any other sport as jogging, running, skating. The cycling lane,
with the most of its way beside the sea, finds itself in a wonderful
background: the lane is indeed an easy way to reach the beach and it also
offers the possibility to wander through the Mediterranean scrub and the
nice gardens of the Flower Riviera. The cycling lane represents moreover
the access to the hinterland valleys, where the experienced cyclist can put
his training to the test.
Passing by Arma di Taggia and Sanremo, 24 km of the course of the old
railway line, which was taken out of use about ten years ago, has become
the longest cycling path in Liguria, a path which is for cyclists of all ages
and ability and runs close to the sea, offering a spectacular view of the
coast. Visitors do not need to bring their bikes from home as they can be
rented here from the plentiful and well-distributed rental shops. Here and
there it is possible to descend down small cliffs onto silent beaches and
literally dive into the colours and perfumes of the wildest and truest
Ligurian sea. You can find Rental Points throughout the cycling lane and
you can find all you need, such as city-bikes, mountain bikes, roller blades,
child seats, rickshaws, and so on). Prices are calculated per hour, per half
an hour, per half a day or daily.
2. SAN LORENZO AL MARE A marine village for a seaside holiday
Elegant, colourful, tranquil, with a beautiful beach, the marine village of
San Lorenzo has something to offer every month of the year. While the
sea 'only' invites swimming in the months between May and October, all
seasons are good for pulling up anchor and set sail from the large, new
marina with 365 moorings. The cycle path that replaced the old railway
line can be enjoyed by bike, on skates and on foot at any time of the year:
its panorama of the sea is simply magnificent. Cultural evenings can be
enjoyed in the small but lively Teatro dell'Albero, which takes its name
from a Ficus planted to the side of the stage.
OSPEDALETTI The mildest climate on the Riviera
After a ship wreck in the 14th century, the Knights of Rhodes landed on
the coast of Ospedaletti where, in thanks, they built a chapel and a
hospice for pilgrims. This hospitale, which has since disappeared, gave its
name to Ospedaletti, a village of fishermen and lemon growers. During
the second half of the 19th century a private company, Society Fondiaria
Lionese, realised the potential of the town and financed its development,
building roads, houses and luxury hotels nestled in gardens of palms and
eucalyptus. Ospedaletti thus became an international tourist destination.
3. In 1874, the businessman Luigi Bessi and a Parisian friend called Julien
opened a company to export local flowers, which became an enormous
success, Since then this has been the "Riviera dei Fiori" or Coast of
Flowers. Today the town with the mildest climate on the Riviera faces
the 21st century with optimism: the railway that separated the town from
its sea has been moved uphill, the cycle path to Sanremo and Arma di
Taggia is under construction, and the Marine Park of Baiaverde with its
botanical gardens, tourist village and marina and aquatic park is currently
being built.
