• Dianoush Emami is an electrical engineer who previously worked at Bechtel Power Corporation. A
resident of Santa Ana, California, Dianoush Emami was instrumental in administering specifications
for the Alvin F. Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant in Waynesboro, Georgia.
In March 2019, the Alvin F. Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant (VNPP) received a $3.7 billion loan
guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund its expansion. The VNPP is set to add two
units, both advanced Generation III+ reactors, with a combined capacity of over 2,200 MW. They
will be the first new nuclear units built in the last three decades in the country. One unit is set to be
commissioned in November 2021, while the other will begin operating one year later.
The expansion will create a stable supply of electricity to meet Georgia’s growing demand. On
completion, the additional units are expected to produce enough electricity to power half a million
homes and businesses. The expansion also fits into President Donald Trump’s administration’s goals
to grow the country’s nuclear capacity, creating a skilled US nuclear workforce and supply chain
expertise that can be exported abroad.
