SPIT AND WHITTLE
WOOD CARVERS
Spit and Whittle weekend is here
again as it has been for the past dozen
years at the Osceola County 4H/FFA
Fairgrounds, September 6-8. This is a
very informal weekend for wood
carvers to get together, visit and share
ideas. It is like always, a sort of fam-
ily reunion of close friends and
neighbors all sharing the same inter-
est. Carvers from states surrounding
Michigan and from Ontario come for
three days of fun. We also will have
the Cedar Bird Shoppe here from
Pinconning with their complete line
of wood carving supplies. Kay’s
Screen Printing & Embroidery from
Midland will also be here. We are
members of the The Michigan Wood
Carvers Association who has many of
its members attending. Visit them
online at www.miwoodcarvers.com
Some carvers bring projects to share
with others and some just bring their
own carvings they have been working
on. Anyone who would like to know
more about wood carving is welcome
to stop by and see what is going on
and maybe even put knife to wood for
the first time. There is no fee to
attend and camping isavailable at the
fairgrounds for only $17 per night.
More information can be found at
www.evartroundup.com or call 231-
734-5125.
OSCEOLA COUNTY
PARKS
The first half of our camping season
has been a good one. There is still
time to visit one of the two County Day
Use and Campgrounds and enjoy the
Jewels of the County. Both Rose Lake
County Park and Crittenden County
Park offer great beaches, fishing and
camping opportunities. Camping sea-
son runs until September 28.
Some of the best camping and fishing
is found in September as days cool
and fish become more active. We
have had great catches of bluegills
and crappie at both lakes. Both Rose
Lake and Big Lake have bass, pike,
walleye and perch. There are public
access landings and boats, tackle and
bait is available in the camp stores.
Osceola County Parks operates strict-
ly on day use and camping receipts.
Come visit one of these great Osceola
County Parks this summer.
Information and reservations is avail-
able by calling the parks directly or
visit us on the county web site at:
www.osceola-county.org/parks.

ANIMAL KRACKERS (4 Edition)
By Sandy Tullar
My daughter has a cat named Cleo. Cleo is a huge, fat, spoiled
and loving kitty. Cleo's two favorite things are getting attention
and sleeping. Her third favorite would have to be eating which
just does not explain the size of this cat. But still she is a pret-
ty kitty and she knows it. Once when my daughter was going
to CA. for 3 months she had to take Cleo with her. Cleo was
her carry on baggage. She had to be sedated (the cat, not my
daughter) because she does not like to be locked up and she
had to be in a cat carrier from Evart, to CA., with several stops.
The vet had provided enough medicine to keep Cleo sleepy
and quiet but for whatever reason it did not work for the
whole trip. My daughter was reading/ dozing when she heard
a small scream from the front of the plane. It seems that Ms.
Cleo had learned how to open her carrier and had found her
way to the front of the plane where she proceeded to scare
several passengers by weaving around their legs the way that
cats do. Now to be honest you really have to laugh about the
situation. Here you are, thousands of feet in the air, minding
your own business and all of a sudden you feel something
around your legs and ankles. After the initial shock and feel-
ing a little foolish for being scared by a wandering kitty, every-
one settled back down and my daughter is thinking "it can't be
Cleo". Imagine her surprise when she reached down to check
her cat carrier and it was empty. My poor red faced child had
to retrieve her cat, stuff her howling back into her crate. The
rest of the trip was pretty uneventful. They arrived, had a won-
derful stay there but then the time arrived for the trip back to
Michigan. That trip might be another story, another time.
Hope you enjoyed this story of Cleo.
