General Authentication Guide
Use your senses to authenticate the new banknotes:
                                                                       Feel the quality of banknote substrate:
                                                                       o   paper – it should feel unique, firm, and slightly rough
                                                                           in the heavily printed areas with crisp sound
                                                                                o    polymer - smooth, unique texture of the
                                                                                     note. It is made from a single piece of

It Pays to Check Your Banknotes
Counterfeit currencies are completely worthless. Don’t get caught– protect yourself and
check your banknotes when you receive them.

Suspecting a Counterfeit

If you become suspicious about the currency during a transaction, follow this simple
steps:


               handle the money as little as possible


               do not write on, cut or modify the counterfeit banknotes.


               do not re-circulate the banknotes


              seal it in an envelope or a plastic cover


              record on a separate spread sheet of paper all the details about how
              you got the currency


              make a police report
Circulating Counterfeit is a Crime

It is a criminal offence to keep or pass on a counterfeit banknote

Maintaining Quality of Banknotes

1. The two mostly-used banknotes denominations (RM1 & RM5) are printed on polymer. The
   following handling tips will ensure the realization of the benefits of polymer


           use paper bands to pack banknotes
           keep the banknote flat, store in upright position
           clean the banknote if it is stained with dirt
                                                                                 durable
                                                                                 recyclable
           expose the banknotes to high temperatures           Benefit

Maintaining Quality of Banknotes

2. Circulation of clean/fit banknotes help to ease identification of counterfeit and makes handling more
   pleasing
       A Malaysian banknotes considered fit if                                 ..and unfit if :
       meets all of the following criterias:

            Genuine, not counterfeit
            Free from defects, holes, tears, tape
               or missing banknote portion                                                    soil     deface

            has uniform brightness and is free
               from excessive soiling
            Free from ink wear
            Free from defacing
                                                                                            Ink-wear    holes



                  Unfit banknotes and coins can be assessed
                  for exchange of value at commercial banks
                  and BNM branches…

  • 20. Maintaining Quality of Banknotes 1. The two mostly-used banknotes denominations (RM1 & RM5) are printed on polymer. The following handling tips will ensure the realization of the benefits of polymer use paper bands to pack banknotes keep the banknote flat, store in upright position clean the banknote if it is stained with dirt  durable  recyclable expose the banknotes to high temperatures Benefit of  non-porous polymer  cleaner crumple, staple and pin your banknotes  resistance to fold the banknotes by applying heavy pressure tear use scissor and knives to unpack banknotes X X X
