FIRE AND ICE
Prepared by:- Dhruvita Dhameliya
Introduction
Robert Frost was born on March 26th, 1874. One
of the most celebrated poets in America.
Robert Frost was an author of searching and often
dark meditations on universal themes and a
quintessentially modern poet in his adherence to
language as it is actually spoken, in the
psychological complexity of his portraits, and in
the degree to which his work is infused with layers
of ambiguity and irony.
His work was initially published in England before it was published in
the United States. Known for his realistic depictions of rural life and
his command of American speech.
Robert Frost's work was highly associated with rural life in New
England. The poet often uses the New England setting to explore
complicated philosophical and social themes. As a well-known and
often-quoted poet.
Robert Frost was highly honored during his presence on earth,
receiving 4 Pulitzer Prizes.
Fire
and
Ice
Fire and Ice:-
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Fire - Desire - Ice - Hatred
Fire and Ice:-
● Fire and Ice" is a popular poem by American poet Robert Frost. It was written and
published in 1920, shortly after WWI, and weighs up the probability of two differing
apocalyptic scenarios represented by the elements of the poem's title.
● Some say the world will end in fire,
● Some say in ice.
● From what I’ve tasted of desire
● I hold with those who favor fire.
● The speaker believes fire to be the more likely world-ender of the two.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
In this Stanza poet says that if world will end - perish twice then he also
consider hatred as reason for that. Which lacks the humanity between the
people and increasing hatred.
Would suffice - Ice is also sufficient for perish the earth.
Perish - Destroy
Themes:-
1) Hatred, Desire, and the End of the World
2) Choices
3) Destructive power
Hatred, Desire, and the End of the World
By “fire” the speaker actually means “desire”—and from the speaker’s limited
personal experience, the speaker knows desire to be a powerfully destructive
force. Humanity, then, could bring about the end of the world through passion,
anger, violence, greed, and bloodlust. Indeed, the “fire” now seems like an
image of warfare too.
Ice works differently from fire in this eschatological prediction. Human
destruction doesn’t have to be bright, noisy, and violent—hate can spread in
more subtle ways. Ice has connotations of coldness and indifference, and so a
possible reading here is that the end of the world could be brought about by
inaction rather than some singular major event
Symbolism :-
Symbolism is a use of
symbols to signify ideas and
qualities, by giving them
symbolic meanings different
from their literal meanings.
“Fire” is the symbol of desires
and “Ice” symbolizes hatred.
Similarly, “green” and “gold”
are the symbol of beauty and
happiness.
Personification is to give human qualities
to inanimate objects. In this poem, “Fire”
and “Ice” are capable of destruction.
Therefore, the poet personifies fire and ice
by giving them a mind which is capable of
destroying almost anything.
Personification:-
Conclusion:-
So at the conclusion we can say that there is two things or emotions
which leads to earth towards destruction. It's not about scientific reason
but the human emotions. As fire once began it can't Stop without
destroying everything same thing apply for the desire once you start to
fulfill it, it increases day by day. Ice stand for stuckness, insensitivity
and hatred. When one start to behaving like ‘ koi fark nhi padta ‘ then
it leads towards the end.
