I became acquainted with Dhivahar in my capacity as his dedicated Mentor Science Teacher in Term
3 of 2014 at Lakeland SHS, supervising Dhivahar for his Preliminary Professional Internship and
subsequent Professional Internship (PI), as components of his Graduate Diploma of Education at
Murdoch University majoring in Science Education and having the minor field of Mathematics.
Throughout the three month period of professional mentoring I developed a good understanding of
Dhivahar’s professional capabilities.
Dhivahar came to Lakeland SHS with the existing qualifications of a Bachelor Degree of Biomedicine
and Molecular Biology having applied his skills with the Institute of Immunology and Infectious
Disease, researching and developing a vaccine for HIV.
Like many graduates on entering the secondary science classroom, Dhivahar experienced a whirlpool
of considerations and interactions that requires a calm and caring, well-reasoned and thoughtful
approach. Despite the incrementally increasing work load to 0.8 of FTE, involving planning,
preparation and delivery of Science lessons and some challenging classroom behaviour, Dhivahar’s
demeanour was totally professional and at all times he conducted himself with poise, caring and
professionalism.
Dhivahar developed an autonomous command of the delivery of the National Science Curriculum to
Years 9 and 10, to both the Academic Extension Stream and General Stream of students with
consideration for pitch and variety in lessons, inclusion of Information Technology and Audio Visual
Technology to embellish lessons and maximise participation, promote Science careers and develop
scientific literacy and curiosity.
Dhivahar addressed the National Professional Standards for Teachers of: Professional Knowledge,
Professional Practice with high levels of competence and the Professional Engagement component
at an outstanding level. Dhivahar developed and maintained an excellent rapport with all members
of the school community, in particular with the students of all academic levels winning their
approval and engagement. Utilising strong reflective practice Dhivahar up-skilled in many areas of
science instruction including demonstrations, laboratory work and teacher dominated instruction
improving his delivery to a highly competent level.
Dhivahar brings an amiable personality, high level of commitment and a strong work ethic to the
role of a Graduate Science Teacher. I have no hesitation in recommending him and refereeing on his
behalf.
