3. INTRODUCTION
While dealing with seeds which are very small in size, we tend to face many problems
with the seeding operations.
The spacing will not be uniform
Smaller seeds are easily washed away by rain
Birds may take up the seeds
Germination will not be uniform
Weeding operations are relatively tough
To deal with these issues mentioned above, The technology of Seed tape was introduced
4. WHAT IS A SEED TAPE?
Seed tapes are a pre-sown product of single or
multiple species of seeds that are already
spaced between tissue layers at the correct
distance for growing.
Many
f
lower, vegetable or herb seeds can be
purchased already incorporated into these
products.
It was discovered and patented by Schindler
George Antony
5. There are two machines required for making and implementing the seed
tapes in
f
ield respectively,
1. SEED TAPE MAKING MACHINE: It encloses the seed into two layers of
paper and gives stiffness to extend it
2. TAPE SEEDER MACHINE: It is used for setting the seed tape in
f
ields.
HOW TO MAKE A SEED TAPE?

3. SEED TANK
1. PASTE TANK
2.THREAD
MECHANISM:
Thread from paste tank takes up a
seed from seed tank and gets
enclosed between two paper tape
7. These threads increase the strength for pulling the seed tape and setting it.
The spacing between each seed can be variably adjusted based on the seed variety
The seed lots with two cotton threads are passed to through a paste tank that is made
by glutinous rice and not involving any synthetic chemicals
The paper must be ventilative and permeable to water required for germination of
seeds.
MECHANISM
10. The weight of this machine would be 5 kg so it is very handy and it is suitable even if
the condition of
f
ield is bad.
The drills make furrows of 6 cm width and 2 cm depth
Consequently the seed tape is pressed down and both sides of furrows will fall down
It is not desirable that the seeds are covered with soil before germination but after
germination the basal part of the stem is covered suf
f
iciently with soil.
MECHANISM
12. Seed spacing prevents over sowing, especially with crops like lettuce, greens, carrots,
wild
f
lowers, etc.
The lightweight tape prevents birds from eating freshly sown seeds
The tape, when covered with additional soil, won’t wash away in a sudden spring downpour,
ruining evenly spaced and sown rows.
Almost all seed tapes are biodegradable to protect wildlife and have no damaging impact on
garden ecosystems.
For gardeners experiencing arthritis or other mobility issues, a seed tape is a quick and easy
way to sow tiny seeds.
ADVANTAGES
13. Machineries used for seed tape production needs huge investment
Buying seeds is comparatively more cheaper than buying seed tapes
If the gum used for sticking the seed is made with chemicals then it will affect the
quality of the seed.
DISADVANTAGES
14. TYPES
This technology have been developed in recent times and it was made in different forms for
convenience

SEED MATS AND CARPETS
SEED SHEETS
15. SEED DISC
Small discs from 8
-
12cm diameter are
suited for standard
f
lowerpots and it
is perfect for the indoor herb garden.
Larger discs, from 14
-
30cm diameter,
are often used for sowing container
gardens.
16. SEED MATS AND
CAREPETS
Seed mats: Ideal for sowing seeds in window
boxes, bedding borders, and big planters.
Seed carpets: Usually for larger areas where
a ready-made ‘mini garden’ is desired. These
are great for wild
f
lower fusions, mixed
vegetables, and salads.
17. A RECENT INNOVATION
The Mainichi, one of the most important
daily newspapers in Japan known for its
stance on the environment, printed a special
100% biodegradable "green” newspaper in
2016 on greenery day with a circulation of
4.6 million copies world wide.

18. CONCLUSION
This technology has a wide scope in future towards a more greener environment
The initial investment is large but still once it is implemented the capital can easily
be regenerated
Extending capability for this technology is tremendous
