schools throughout Japan.
Rakuten IT School has provided classes on mainly e-commerce since 2008 to high school students at 81 commercial
high schools who are about to enter society. These courses teach shortcuts to business success and make the students
to enjoy a taste of e-commerce, in order to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship and revitalize local regions. With the
cooperation of local Rakuten Ichiba merchants and Rakuten Travel hoteliers, they picture the mindset of a customer
when they buy a product or make a travel reservation, and brainstorm plans that will resonate with customers. They
actually engage in sales at Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten Travel during the year-end business battle, so they can gain a
direct understanding of customer responses. While practicing sales, many schools utilize their local strengths as their
local identity, playing a part in regional revitalization. Furthermore, the culmination is a gathering of selected schools
from all over Japan in Tokyo for a Rakuten IT School presentation competition to determine the best in Japan for the year.

Rakuten Mobile Library has been launched in December 2012 in Fukushima Prefecture with the goal of promoting
reading among children and developing the disaster-hit region.
In addition to over 1,200 picture books, illustrated books, and comics for elementary school children and younger,
e-books, tablets, and other non-paper books were also enjoyed by many children. Those books attract their guardians
also, thus contributing to revitalizing regional communities.
This effort was expanded in 2014 to revitalize local communities throughout Japan, with a focus on providing
opportunities to become familiar with books for children and harmonious local community for guardians.

We also sent out original Christmas cards made by Rakuten staff together
with the presents.
The Rakuten Santa Project involved preparation of presents supplied courtesy of Rakuten Ichiba merchants, bearing
in mind the age, gender, and personalities of each child, while imagining the smiles on their faces upon receiving the
presents. Stuffed animals and soft toys for the little ones, stationery or fashion accessories for elementary school kids,
clothes for junior high and high schoolers - we received heartfelt letters of thanks from many children after Christmas.

to enable young people leaving foster care institutions or foster families to live independently and gain employment or
further their studies (150,000 yen).
The Rakuten Santa Project is also set up to put a smile on the face of children living in institutions across Japan by
delivering them Christmas presents, giving them some time to interact socially for relaxation and enjoyment, and to give
them room for dreams in their daily lives.
The projects will continue to undertake initiatives to support the dreams and growth of children and young people and

9. In the process of studying forests across Japan, it was found that a number of issues were emerging depending on
the way forests were formed. By addressing these through progressive thinning of coniferous forests, and thinning
with undergrowth clearance in broad-leaved forests, they will return to their original state. In order to deal with these
challenges, as well as the revitalization of local industries through exploitation of thinned wood and to fulfill our role in
local environmental education, Rakuten’s Forest is becoming a nationwide program. In future, it will also be a platform
for action overseas.

Addressing the issues facing forests across regions regarding restoring
activities of original forests to allow sunshine through the canopy
Rakuten’s Forest, a project that aims to restore forests and protect biodiversity, was launched after the start of the
public awareness-focused Project to Protect Clutch’s Golden Eagle Buddies in 2012 – golden eagles, upon which Clutch,
mascot of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles is modeled, are in danger of extinction. We heard from a number of
experts that large-scale development and lack of appropriate forest thinning in recent times was leading to increased
forest density, which stops sunlight from falling on the forest floor. This in turn makes the forest a less viable habitat for
the golden eagle. The project was launched in the six prefectures of Tohoku where the golden eagle was still confirmed
as surviving, with the objective of restoring functional and appropriate forest activities. The challenges facing forests in
each community are now being addressed through thinning, weeding, and clearance of undergrowth, for example.

A proposal for optimizing energy use
by changing the way we think about energy
In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, there was a surge of interest in energy in Japan. The focus switched
to renewable energy, led by solar power. Rakuten also contributed to the expansion of renewable energy, launching
Rakuten Solar in 2012 to deliver high-quality solar power systems with lithium battery storage to households at a
reasonable price. In 2013, Rakuten Energy took this to the next level beyond the “how” of power supply and demand,
offering comprehensive user solutions for energy efficiency through demand response. This curbs electricity use at peak
hours of demand during supply crises through efforts by demand and supply sides, or proposes to companies and local
bodies about introducing renewable energy. In the future, Rakuten will propose a new approach to energy by analysing
consumer energy data, harnessing IT and through electricity supply and demand forecasting, for example; as Japan
nears full liberalization of the electricity market in 2016.
Through Rakuten Energy, Rakuten is developing “i Sharing Service” for hotels and merchants on the Rakuten Travel
and Rakuten Ichiba platforms, aiming to cut power costs and promote an environmentally friendly use of electricity
by supplying Optimized power from low-cost, renewable sources. Proceeds from the service are devoted to Rakuten’s
Forest, the biodiversity and reforestation project.
Rakuten Energy is promoting “Eco-tabi” (eco-tour), an initiative designed to redirect profits derived from hotels
participating in “i Sharing Service” and their guests to environmental preservation.
As a result of joining “i Sharing Service”, hotels have been able to limit their electricity costs, with part of the savings
going to Rakuten’s Forest for investment in forest improvement activities. That makes Eco-tabi, where customers choose
to stay at hotels taking part in “i Sharing Service”, a first step toward sustainability. Customers are informed of the
campaign, and at the same time, are offered easy-to-access discounts and specials.

Contribute to revitalization of Indonesia Forest
Indonesia is home to some of the most biologically diverse forests in the world, suffers deforestation caused by illegal
logging, forest burning, and irresponsible clearing by companies.
Various efforts have been done to help prevent this deforestation, and Rakuten, as one of the company who has branch
in Indonesia, is seek to contribute in these efforts.
Environmental considerations
With the reforestation initiative in Indonesia, we have committed to plant trees over a three year period in regions that
are affected by deforestation.
As the start of our 3 year plan, we have finished planting 1,000 Trees in Bali, and 30,000 Trees in South Kalimantan as of

Addressing environmental issue in Brazil
Brazil's Atlantic Forest is one of the richest of the planet in terms of biodiversity, but also one of the most threatened.
Due to deforestation, over 11,000 species of plants and animals are considered threatened today, water crisis in several
areas, and so on.
Facing such a critical situation, Rakuten has decided to take action and extended its forest initiative to Brazil where it
has business activities.
Environmental considerations
Rakuten is committed to restoring the Atlantic Forest within the São Paulo State, in collaboration with a local NPO. The
first project represents 25,000 native tree species to be planted in the region of São José do Rio Preto by the end of
2015, and to be monitored during 5 years.
To mark the start of this initiative, we held symbolic planting in Villa Lobos Park, Sao Paulo

Collaborating with professional athletes to raise environmental
awareness
Rakuten is passionate about sports and about contributing to local communities. Rakuten Green Tour in USA is one of
our way to raise environmental awareness to society using the influence of professional athletes. This collaboration with
the AVP is a great way for Rakuten to support an exciting sport and encourage local fans, players and our employees to
be active in their own communities
Environmental considerations
We are visiting several cities in USA, and in each of those cities, Rakuten will design a campaign to address
environmental issues specific to the area and will recruit players, staff, fans and other volunteers to participate in
projects such as beach cleanups, park beautifications and more.
We started the Rakuten Green Tour in New York city, were we worked together with Volley Ball athletes, local
environmental NPOs, volunteer and Rakuten employee to clean up the bushes and plant trees in the areas along the

As I reflected back on Rakuten’s contributions to society, it led me to recall the Great
Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995. The earthquake reduced the town where I was
raised to rubble instantaneously. The scene as we frantically searched for my aunt
and uncle is something that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Confronted with the death of my aunt and uncle, it occurred to me that you only live
once. So the next year, in 1996, I quit the company that I was working for and set to
work establishing Rakuten. My thinking was that if we could empower even the tiny,
local shops reduced to rubble from back then by allowing them to sell their wares
on an equal footing as the companies located in major urban areas, then this could
serve as a major source of strength underpinning Japan.
My conviction in this has not changed still to this day.
Immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, I could not stand idly
by, and so I visited evacuation shelters and went around asking what I could do. I
also gathered together supplies at Rakuten warehouses, and delivered things like
water, diapers, and food to the afflicted regions.
The employees of Rakuten also thought about what they could do out of a similar
sentiment, and so all of us joined forces to take action together.
We began considering Rakuten Clutch’s Special Charity Fund one week after the
earthquake, and the fund collected 738.92 million yen in donations for the Great
East Japan Earthquake. It is still going strong, as it has continued to provide disaster
relief for the disaster caused by heavy rains in Hiroshima, and disaster funds for the
disaster in Kyushu from torrential downpours resulting from Typhoon No. 18 (Kyoto).
Such support has not been limited to within Japan, as the fund has also provided
support to the Philippines, Thailand, and Turkey.
I would like to make people aware of Rakuten’s CSR, while at the same time also
getting people to understand that Rakuten is acting broadly in a variety of different
fields. But I feel that merely regarding the company’s social responsibility and
contributions to society as CSR is not exactly correct.
Rakuten’s very existence began from a desire to empower even those who have
been reduced to rubble, such as small, local shops, to pull themselves up. In this
manner, Rakuten itself will continue striving to produce value in which each and
every individual can share a sense of health and happiness by creating sustainable
arrangements on into the future.
