Jokes
When I was little, I didn't care about
things like what to wear, my parents
dressed me. Looking back at some
of my old pictures, it's obvious that
my parents didn't care either.
Two women came before wise King
Solomon, dragging between them a
young man.
"This young man agreed to marry my
daughter," said one.
"No! He agreed to marry MY daugh-
ter," said the other.
And so they began arguing until the
King called for silence.
"Bring me my biggest sword," said
Solomon, "and I shall hew the young
man in half. Each of you shall re-
ceive a half."
"Sounds good to me," said the first
lady. But the other woman said, "Oh
Sire, do not spill innocent blood. Let
the other woman's daughter marry
him."
The wise king did not hesitate a mo-
ment. "The man must marry the first
woman's daughter," he proclaimed.
"But she was willing to hew him in
two!" exclaimed the king's court.
"Indeed," said wise King Solomon.
"That shows she is the TRUE moth-
er-in-law."
A wise old gentleman retired and
purchased a modest home near a
school. He spent the first few weeks
of his retirement in peace and con-
tentment. Then a new school year
began.
The very next afternoon three young
boys, full of youthful, after-school
enthusiasm, came down his street,
beating merrily on every trash can
they encountered. The crashing per-
cussion continued day after day, until
finally the wise old man decided it
was time to take some action.
The next afternoon, he walked out to
meet the young percussionists as they
banged their way down the street.
Stopping them, he said, "You kids
are a lot of fun. I like to see you ex-
press your exuberance like that. In
fact, I used to do the same thing
when I was your age. Will you do me
a favour? I'll give you each a euro if
you'll promise to come around every
day and do your thing."
The kids were elated and continued
to do a bang-up job on the trash cans.
After a few days, the old-timer greet-
ed the kids again, but this time he had
a sad smile on his face. "This reces-
sion's really putting a big dent in my
income," he told them. "From now
on, I'll only be able to pay you 50
cents to beat on the cans." The noise-
makers were obviously displeased,
but they did accept his offer and con-
tinued their afternoon ruckus. A few
days later, the wily retiree ap-
proached them again as they
drummed their way down the street.
"Look," he said, "I haven't received
my pension yet, so I'm not going to
be able to give you more than 25
cents. Will that be okay?" "A lousy
25 cent?" the drum leader exclaimed.
"If you think we're going to waste
our time, beating these cans around
for 25cent, you're nuts! No way, mis-
ter. We quit!" And the old man en-
joyed peace.

Borrisoleigh Bikes
Tipperary 20th May 2013 - Cyclists
from Tipperary and around the coun-
try are taking part in a fundraising
cycle to help create new jobs in local
food initiatives. On June 15th over
100 cyclists will take part in the 100k
cycle which starts in Borrisokane at
10am. The route travels through
Nenagh, Borrisoleigh, Templemore,
Roscrea, Cloughjordan and finishes
up again in Borrisokane. The cy-
clists will be raising funds for GET
Local (formerly LocalSwitch), an
Irish based cooperative, non profit
organisation. Get Local offers em-
powerment, mentorship and a com-
plete business services platform to
local, community entrepreneurs creat-
ing local jobs.
Cycle teams from Borrisokane, Borri-
soleigh, Nenagh and Clonmel will be
taking part in the event with many
more expected to sign up over the
coming weeks. People along the route
are encouraged to cheer on and sup-
port the cyclists as they pass through
each area. Halfway refreshments will
be provided to cyclists courtesy of
local food producers Cloughjordan
Woodfired Bakery, Brady Family
Ham & Tipperary Water. Refresh-
ments will be served up in Borri-
sokane at the end of the cycle.
Event organiser Padraic O Brien said
“This is a fantastic opportunity for
whole communities to come together
and support local job creation. Almost
€5 billion worth of food is imported
into Ireland each year. We want to
reverse the outflow of money from
the local economy. We will do this
through rebuilding local food supply
chains. Funds raised through this cy-
cle will enable us to provide start up
capital to new local food initiatives.”
An event page has been set up on Fa-
cebook under the title Borris v Borris

Initiatives. You can also follow up-
dates on Twitter from @LocalSwitch

Great success for the Club was had
in The Helix, Dublin with Con Mc-

was Con’s first appearance at the

the occasion. Con was presented
with a beautiful crystal trophy by
the National President of Macra,

night a large group from Devilsbit

members helped to organise the
event which was hailed a great suc-

has been underway for the last few
weeks and we have gotten a great
response with a number of new

The business landscape has changed
considerably over the past number
of years. Tradesmen have all seen
work diminish to unprecedented lev-
els. It is great then to see businesses
that cater for those who would pre-
fer to keep costs low. One such
business, for the times we live in, is
Barry Engineering Ltd. located just
outside Templetuohy on the Rath-
downey road.
They stock a large range of good
used second hand tools, plant and
equipment for people involved in
construction, forestry and agricul-
ture. They also stock a large range
of parts, both new and used for a
wide range of tools and equipment.
Tradesmen can buy parts to repair
existing tools or equipment or buy
the tools or equipment themselves.
Some of the stock and parts that
Barry Engineering have include ce-
ment mixers, consaws, pipe benders
and threaders, engines, generators
and rotovators.
They are located just 2 miles outside
Templetuohy on the Rathdowney
Road. To view some of the tools

The Tipperary Friends of Animals
held their annual Sponsored Dog
Walk on Sunday 19th May. It was
well supported by a large variety of
dogs and their owners who covered
the three mile walk without any
bother. The weather was very clem-
ent to the walkers as it was neither
hot nor cold. The afternoon started
off with a Blessing of the Animals
by Fr. Hilary, Parish Priest of
Nenagh, who also blessed the effort
made by everyone in alleviating the
plight of God’s unfortunate crea-
tures. Refresh-
ments were
served at the
end of the
walk, rounding
off another
successful fundraising day.
The Society wishes to thank Fr. Hil-
lary for his time and blessing and to
all the people who raised much need
funds for the animals.
The Tipperary Friends of Animals
continue to stress that owners of cats
and dogs should have their pets neu-
tered. The Society gives out vouch-
ers to assist with the cost of
neutering. They also ask that people
who walk their dogs on the public
pavements carry poop bags to clean
up after their pets and keep the
streets clean for everyone to enjoy.
Sponsored Dog Walk
A psychologist walked around
a room while teaching stress
management to an audience.
As she raised a glass of water,
everyone expected they'd be
asked the "half empty or half
full" question. Instead, with a
smile on her face, she inquired:
"How heavy is this glass of water?"
Answers called out ranged from 8 oz.
to 20 oz.
She replied, "The absolute weight
doesn't matter. It depends on how
long I hold it. If I hold it for a
minute, it's not a problem. If I hold it
for an hour, I'll have an ache in my
arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm
will feel numb and paralyzed. In each
case, the weight of the glass doesn't
change, but the longer I hold
it, the heavier it becomes."
She continued, "The stresses
and worries in life are like that
glass of water. Think about
them for a while and nothing
happens. Think about them a
bit longer and they begin to hurt.
And if you think about them all day
long, you will feel paralyzed – inca-
pable of doing anything."
It’s important to remember to let go
of your stresses. As early in the
evening as you can, put all your bur-
dens down. Don't carry them through
the evening and into the night. Re-
member to put the glass down!
What are you carrying around?

Drivers increasingly negligent
about the maintenance of their tyres
• Number of underinflated or worn tyres
soars in 2012 (increase of 25%)
• 78% of motorists drive on underinflated
tyres (compared with 63% in 2011)
• 25% of motorists drive on tyres worn
beyond the legal limit (compared with
20% in 2011)
• Financial crisis most likely cause of de-
cline in tyre safety
• Underinflated or worn tyres are both
dangerous and uneconomical
• Poor tyre maintenance accounts for bil-
lions of litres of wasted fuel and in-
creased CO2 output of 9,2 million tonnes
each year
Bridgestone, the world’s largest tyre
manufacturer, is concerned about a clear
decline in the safety of drivers in Europe
due to poor tyre maintenance. Based on
the results of over 28 000 free tyre safety
checks carried out in 2012 – its 8th con-
secutive edition – a staggering 78% of
vehicles were found to have underinflat-
ed tyres while over a quarter had tyres
that were worn beyond the legal limit.
These alarming figures are even more
disturbing, given that they represent an
increase of around 25% on 2011. The
most likely cause of the increase is the
economic crisis, rising fuel prices and
declining purchasing power. Neverthe-
less, Bridgestone warns against the dan-
gers of underinflated and/or worn tyres as
incorrect inflation pressure and/or worn
tyres compromise safety on the roads by
decreasing stability and steering response
while increasing braking distances.
Jake Rønsholt, General Manager Corpo-
rate & Brand Communications, Bridge-
stone Europe: “Driving on underinflated
tyres is not only dangerous. It is an enor-
mous waste of fuel and the cause of car-
bon emissions that could easily be
avoided by simple, regular checks. Ideal-
ly, drivers should check their tyre pres-
sure once a month. And while doing so, it
is also a good idea to check tread depth
and look out for damage or irregular
wear at the same time. Some people tend
to forget that driving on underinflated
and/or worn tyres may considerably im-
pact handling and braking… Many see
tyres as only black and round, a necessity
purchase, but we must always bear in
mind that they are the only point of con-
tact with the road, and the size of 4 post-
cards!”
Ironically, poor tyre maintenance is like-
ly to end up costing more money over
time. Underinflated tyres not only wear
out faster but are also responsible for an
estimated 3.9 billion liters of wasted fuel
and 9.2 million tons of unnecessary CO2
emissions per year. Which means in-
creased cost for drivers and society as a
whole.

Tipperary is an “ideal” location for
setting up and running a small busi-
ness, according to the organisers
behind the county’s largest enter-
prise initiative, the ‘Who to talk to’
Expo in Thurles which took place in
Thurles on Tuesday 14.
Organised by the North Tipperary
County Development Board, thirty
state support agencies offered ad-
vice, information and supports to an
estimated 300 small business own-
ers and aspiring entrepreneurs at the
free afternoon event.
Opportunities around food tourism,
on-farm food enterprises, exporting,
marketing and retail trends were all
on the agenda, with experts on hand
from 30 organisations, including the
Tipperary North County Enterprise
Board, Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland,
Teagasc, Microfinance Ireland, Irish
Exporters Association and Fáilte
Ireland. This event was a first for
Tipperary in terms of the focus on
food and the organisers received
very position feedback on the day
from local business owners/
managers who appreciated that gen-
erally such high profile speakers
don’t make it out of the main cities.
Tipperary is an ideal location for
setting up a small business, especial-
ly a food business, according to the
County Manager of North Tipperary
County Council, Joe MacGrath. He
said: “Tipperary is most definitely
open for business and we already
have a vibrant food sector thriving
here with a growing Food Producers
Network. There’s plenty of scope
for food tourism in Tipperary and
for rural and farming communities,
on farm food production can gener-
ate real business.”
Today’s event kicked-off with pres-
entations about access to finance,
loans and grants, which was a very
popular topic, according to Rita
Guinan, CEO of the Tipperary
North County Enterprise Board. She
said: “When you’re thinking of set-
ting up a new venture or growing an
existing business, you need to find
out what supports are out there for
enterprise. The aim behind ‘Who to
talk to’ was to simply bring those
seeking supports together with those
offering the supports, all under the
same roof.”
There were five food focussed semi-
nars in the programme, starting
with: ‘Developing Export Opportu-
nities for Irish Food & Drink’ with
Stephanie Moe from Bord Bia; Tom
Doorley shared his thoughts and in-
sights around getting media atten-
tion for food businesses; Caoimhe
Ni Dhuibhinn from Fáilte Ireland
highlighted the opportunities around
food tourism; the ‘Retail Food
Landscape’ in Ireland, according to
the Kantar World Panel, was the
topic of David Berry’s seminar and
‘Starting an on-Farm Food Busi-
ness’ was discussed by Teagasc’s
Eddie O’Neill.
‘Who to Talk To’ was officially
opened by restaurant critic, Tom
Doorley and took place at the
Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre
(LIT Campus).
Further information about the year-
round enterprise supports available
in Tipperary is available from

First things first – it’s not about go-
ing on ‘a diet’ – GRIN! That’s be-
cause it’s about eating more of the
good foods and then your desires for
processed and junk foods will auto-
matically go away. Here’s your sim-
ple guide to getting ready to feeling
more confident wearing your sun-
shine permitting summer wardrobe,
Make sure that at every meal you
have salad, fruit and/or vegetables.
Hot Tip: Aim for the colours of the
rainbow - the more colours you in-
clude the more vitamins and miner-
als your body gets and the fuller you
will feel
At every meal you include some low
GI Carbs. Foods like oats or muesli
for breakfast, whole wheat wrap or
granary bread for lunch; sweet pota-
toes, new potatoes, basmati rice and
whole grain pasta for dinner
Hot Tip: A portion is about the size
of a closed fist. More than this and
your belly will not get flatter!
Make sure at every meal you include
some good quality protein e.g. tur-
key, chicken, fish, lentils, beans,
eggs. Hot Tip: Save some money
while you’re at it by swapping meat
in meals for lentils and beans as they
are super cheap
Healthy fats are really important too
e.g. salmon and sardines, olive oil or
rapeseed oil, avocado, nuts and
seeds. Hot Tip: For a great veggie
dip, mash half an avocado, cherry
tomatoes and red onion with lime
juice and black pepper.
Include low fat dairy products every
day. A study published in the Inter-
national Journal of Obesity said,
"People who get their calcium from
yogurt rather than from other sourc-
es may lose more weight around
their midsection." This is likely to be
because of the probiotic bacteria
found in yoghurt keeps your diges-
tive system healthy, which means
less gas, bloating and constipation,
and therefore, a flatter tummy. Hot
Tip: If you cannot tolerate dairy then
choose soya, hazelnut or almond
milk and yoghurts instead to ensure
you still meet your calcium require-
ments.
Cut down on alcohol. Thinking of
‘beer belly’ – yes it’s true. Alcohol
makes you store fat around your
stomach. Hot Tip: Drink water in
between drinks to help you drink
less alcohol and avoid a hangover!
Make sure you’re not bloated. The
top things to cut out if you are bloat-
ed are fizzy drinks, chewing gum,
salty foods (e.g. fast food, processed
foods, crisps) and gassy vegetables
like brussel sprouts and cabbage.
Hot Tip: If you have problems with
grains or other foods and bloating
then a dietitian can help you (see
contact details below)
Drink more water! Keeping hydrated
is possibly one of the easiest and
most beneficial things you can do for
your body. Hot Tip: Next time
you’re hungry try having a glass of
water first as your body may be
thirsty not hungry.
To get a flatter tummy try to include
the foods mentioned here– if you’re
struggling with achieving this why
not make an appointment to attend a
nutrition consultation with Lorraine,
an expert in helping you change your
diet habits for good!

save a vast area of wetland habitats
from destruction after the filling-in
of the settling pools by the Thurles
Sugar Factory during its closure.
These lagoons used to be an oasis of
wildlife, particularly birds. The Trust
was formed and acquired the land
adjacent to the filled-in lagoons to
ensure the continuation of this rest-
ing place for migratory birds. For

If you are going your own fruit, vege-
tables and herbs then you should con-
sider every step in the process to
ensure that you get plants that are nu-
tritious and safe to eat. This is proba-
bly the number one benefit of
growing your own and now with the
range of organic plant foods available
on the market you can ensure only the
best ingredients go into making the
fruit and veg that you eat at home.
Organic plant food contain only natu-
ral ingredients and no synthetic or
man made chemicals or compounds
are added. Therefore the nutrients you
give your plants are just as nature in-
tended and are unlikely to have any
negative impact on your health or
well being.
There has been much said about the
benefits of eating organic foods, some
positive, some negative. Many have
suggested that organic food is of no
additional nutrient benefit than com-
mercially produced foods. However
there has been much evidence to sug-
gest that organic food has been found
to be higher in antitoxins and phyto-
chemicals.
This coupled with the fact that organ-
ic foods do not contain synthetic
chemicals such as preservatives, weed
killers, fertilizers, herbicides or hor-
mones means that eating organic can
only be better for your health
Growing your own vegetables can be
100% organic too. Just eliminate all
chemicals from your gardening prac-
tices and convert to organic equiva-
lents. Use organic certified seeds, use
organic plant foods, and farm yard
manure, use natural pest controls and
pest barriers, grow vegetables suited
to your soil and live with a certain
amount of pest damage.
Organic plant foods such as Baby Bio
plant food contains the same balance
of essential nutrients as common syn-
thetic multi purpose plant foods. The
nutrients of Nitrogen, Potassium and
Phosphorous can all be found and
will support plant growth including
its roots, foliage, buds, flowers and
fruits.
Plants and soil prefer organic plant
food as it breaks down slower in the
soil giving a more steady and contin-
uous feed. While synthetic feeds offer
a quick burst of nutrients and then
dwindle down to nothing just when
the plant requires it the most. Organic
feeds do not interfere with the soils
micro organisms and will not kill or
harm our hard working worms which
are essential for good soils and de-
composition of organic waste.
There are a range of pellet and liquid
feeds available to suit your own
growing method. A liquid feed can be
applied continuously over the grow-
ing season or you can apply it hydro-
ponicaly to indoor grown plants
Granular or pelleted feeds can be ap-
plied to soil at time of soil preparation
or sowing of seed or transplants and
can again be applied as a top dressing
during the growing season.
Peace of mind with
organic plant food
To create perfectly natural markers, write the names of plants (using a per-
manent marker) on the flat faces of stones of various sizes and place them at
or near the base of your plants.

Observing birds in your own back
yard can often reveal some interest-
ing behavior. I was visiting a friend
of mind that has a dog that spends
most of its time indoors and in this
artificial environment he sheds a lot
of hair. Each morning the floor is
mopped and the brush is left outside
to dry. For the last few weeks a beau-
tiful pair of bluetits have been care-
fully removing the hairs for their
nest. Also when the dryer is finished
she hangs the fluff outside and the
Jackdaws fight for this to make a
warm and dry lining for their eggs.
Next door there is a tall hotel and
through the open skylight I heard the
excited calls of the swifts. These are
summer migrants from Africa and
arrive later than swallows. I saw my
first one on the fifth of May and by
the end of August they will have re-
turned home. These are true city
birds and could nearly be renamed
“street swifts”.
They have a very distinctive shape
when flying (like an old fashioned
sickle) with a narrow body and
curved wings that are built for speed
and endurance. They can reach up to
two hundred miles per hour and most
of their lives are spent beneath the
clouds. I have never seen them perch-
ing on the ESB wires like swallows
because all of their toes on their feet
are pointing forward and this ar-
rangement prevents them form land-
ing. On swallows three toes are
pointing forward and one long toe
backwards and his allows them to get
a good grip.
Swifts are aerial specialists and for
the first two years of their lives they
rarely touch the ground. I have read
reports of people who have watched
swifts disappearing high in sky at
dusk above their roosting spots and
not returning even when it became
fully dark. This has lead to the theory
that they sleep in the night skies.
Mating also takes place mid air and if
birds lands on the ground he will find
it very difficult to take off.
A few years ago I got a call from a
guard in my local station. They had
left a window open and a bird had
come in and crashed into the wall. It
was stunned but appeared to be unin-
jured. I was asked what they should
do. I knew that swifts nested in the
building so I suggested leaving the
bird in an open box on a high win-
dow sill and when it had recovered it
would fly away. Sure enough when I
checked in the following day it flown
to safety.
While swallows might make a sum-
mer for me the swift is the sound of
holidays. Fearless in flight they chase
each other just skimming the tops of
the traffic and shrieking loudly all the
time. There were once known as dev-
ils swallows and screech martin.
Nests are built under the eves in
buildings, in old castles and rarely in
trees. Then it uses its own saliva to
glue the structure together. Only one
brood is raised during the breeding
season and the chicks are fed on a
rich protein diet of insects. These are
caught by the adults who like the
whales in the seas fly around with
mouths open catching flies.
The inside of the mouth is sticky and
this traps the insects. Once they have
a full crop they return to the nest to
feed their brood. Swifts nest in colo-
nies and return to the same site each
year.

The importance of exercise
There are, however, less expensive
ways to ease anxiety. One of these is
to join support groups, although this is
difficult for those with social phobia.
People with similar complaints are
more understanding of your condition,
and you will experience empathy from
other sufferers. You can also learn
about how they cope. If you suffer
from social phobia, it would be a way
to become desensitised and ease the
fear that goes with that type of anxie-
ty. More of that later. Alternatively,
you may wish to use chat rooms on the
internet to share your experiences with
other sufferers. Of course, you do not
know the individuals on the internet,
and you cannot be sure of their bona
fides, so you must be careful if you
decide to use chat rooms. Ultimately,
using counselling is a safer way of
dealing with anxiety.
In many cases, anxiety can be expelled
quickly. For example, my experience
is that people who take on the worries
and cares of others find themselves
plagued by anxious feelings. They
seem to absorb the anxiety of others.
This is most likely a boundaries issue.
Such individuals may have spongy
boundaries and easily soak up the neg-
ative feelings of others, especially the
feelings of family members or close
relatives. Interestingly, I have found
that it is not too difficult to learn about
boundaries, and to begin erecting them
as a protection against anxiety. It is,
however, very difficult to erect bound-
aries when our children are concerned.
While anxiety can be eased in many
cases, if, on the other hand, it stems
from negative experiences in early
childhood, then the process is longer
and more uncertain. This type of ex-
treme anxiety often seems like being
crazy, and can lead to addictions and
alcoholism. Such sufferers flee from
memories of their childhood, dissoci-
ate, are eternally busy, cannot rest,
always feel uneasy, and never feel
peace. Dealing with this requires time,
patience and practise.
I believe, for example, that exercise is
one of the best ways to relieve anxiety.
Walking, running, gym-work, and
swimming are all good ways to relieve
tension. I always spend 40 minutes per
day exercising. There are mornings
when I do not feel like it but I have
conditioned myself to exercise every
day except Sunday. I go for a long
walk on Saturday and from Monday to
Friday I spend half an hour on what is
called a cross trainer, which is a very
demanding exercise. I combine this
with some work with weights, which
helps maintain muscle. I follow this
with sit-ups, which tighten abdomen
muscles. This gives me more energy,
more satisfaction and more enthusi-
asm, and it clears my head for the day
ahead. I generally sit down to write
immediately following my period of
exercise, and find that I can work for
hours at the computer without feeling
tired or bored. I find, too, that my body
is much stronger than it would be for
someone of my age. I do a lot of set
dancing, which can be energy sapping,
but dancing eight or nine sets over a 3
or 4 hour period is not a problem for
me. There is now plenty of evidence
that exercise helps to prolong our life,
and gives us a good quality of life over
a long period. It is good for the heart
and the lungs, and helps us to sleep
better, but it must be done on a regular
basis, that is why it is helpful to under-
stand how exercise reduces anxiety
(and stress). This gives us motivation
when we do not feel inclined to take
exercise.
Exercise helps to expel toxins from
our body. Any form of exercise helps
to remove these poisonous substances,
as it increases oxygen to the cells and
stimulates better circulation. Exercise
also releases endorphins into the blood
that create a sense of well being.
Endorphins are hormones within the
brain and are produced by the pituitary
gland and the hypothalamus (part of
the brain). Clearly, exercise also
lessens muscle tension, which often
accompanies anxiety, and brings
about a sense of relaxation. We have
to find what the best relaxing exercise
is for us. Sometimes ‘violent’
exercise, for example, using a punch
bag only increases negative feeling
such as anger.

time I ask You this very special one
(mention favour). Take it Dear
Heart of Jesus and place it within
Your own broken heart where Your
Father sees it. Then in His merciful
eyes it will become Your favour,
not mine. Amen. Say this prayer
for 3 days, promise publication and
favour will be granted. Never
know to fail M.K.
