Looking back at someof my old pictures, its obvious thatmy parents didnt care either. Two women came before wise KingSolomon, dragging between them ayoung man."This young man agreed to marry mydaughter," said one."No! He agreed to marry MY daugh-ter," said the other. And so they began arguing until theKing called for silence."Bring me my biggest sword," saidSolomon, "and I shall hew the youngman in half. Each of you shall re-ceive a half.""Sounds good to me," said the firstlady. But the other woman said, "OhSire, do not spill innocent blood. Letthe other womans daughter marryhim."The wise king did not hesitate a mo-ment. "The man must marry the firstwomans daughter," he proclaimed."But she was willing to hew him intwo!" exclaimed the kings court."Indeed," said wise King Solomon."That shows she is the TRUE moth-er-in-law."A wise old gentleman retired andpurchased a modest home near aschool. He spent the first few weeksof his retirement in peace and con-tentment. Then a new school yearbegan. The very next afternoon three youngboys, full of youthful, after-schoolenthusiasm, came down his street, beating merrily on every trash canthey encountered. The crashing per-cussion continued day after day, untilfinally the wise old man decided itwas time to take some action. The next afternoon, he walked out tomeet the young percussionists as theybanged their way down the street.Stopping them, he said, "You kidsare a lot of fun. I like to see you ex-press your exuberance like that. Infact, I used to do the same thingwhen I was your age. Will you do mea favour? Ill give you each a euro ifyoull promise to come around everyday and do your thing."The kids were elated and continuedto do a bang-up job on the trash cans. After a few days, the old-timer greet-ed the kids again, but this time he hada sad smile on his face. "This reces-sions really putting a big dent in myincome," he told them. "From nowon, Ill only be able to pay you 50cents to beat on the cans." The noise-makers were obviously displeased, but they did accept his offer and con-tinued their afternoon ruckus. A fewdays later, the wily retiree ap-proached them again as theydrummed their way down the street."Look," he said, "I havent receivedmy pension yet, so Im not going tobe able to give you more than 25cents. Will that be okay?" "A lousy25 cent?" the drum leader exclaimed."If you think were going to wasteour time, beating these cans aroundfor 25cent, youre nuts! No way, mis-ter. We quit!" Instead, with asmile on her face, she inquired:"How heavy is this glass of water?"Answers called out ranged from 8 20 oz.She replied, "The absolute weightdoesnt matter. It depends on howlong I hold it. If I hold it for aminute, its not a problem. If I hold itfor an hour, Ill have an ache in myarm. If I hold it for a day, my armwill feel numb and paralyzed. In eachcase, the weight of the glass doesntchange, but the longer I holdit, the heavier it becomes."She continued, "The stressesand worries in life are like thatglass of water. Think aboutthem for a while and nothinghappens. Think about them abit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all daylong, you will feel paralyzed – inca-pable of doing anything."It’s important to remember to let goof your stresses. As early in theevening as you can, put all your bur-dens down. Dont carry them throughthe evening and into the night. Based onthe results of over 28 000 free tyre safetychecks carried out in 2012 – its 8th con-secutive edition – a staggering 78% ofvehicles were found to have underinflat-ed tyres while over a quarter had tyresthat were worn beyond the legal limit. These alarming figures are even moredisturbing, given that they represent anincrease of around 25% on 2011. Themost likely cause of the increase is theeconomic crisis, rising fuel prices anddeclining purchasing power. Neverthe-less, Bridgestone warns against the dan-gers of underinflated and/or worn tyres asincorrect inflation pressure and/or worntyres compromise safety on the roads bydecreasing stability and steering responsewhile increasing braking distances.Jake Rønsholt, General Manager Corpo-rate & Brand Communications, Bridge-stone Europe: “Driving on underinflatedtyres is not only dangerous. It is an enor-mous waste of fuel and the cause of car-bon emissions that could easily beavoided by simple, regular checks. Ideal-ly, drivers should check their tyre pres-sure once a month. And while doing so, itis also a good idea to check tread depthand look out for damage or irregularwear at the same time. Some people tendto forget that driving on underinflatedand/or worn tyres may considerably im-pact handling and braking… Many seetyres as only black and round, a necessitypurchase, but we must always bear inmind that they are the only point of con-tact with the road, and the size of 4 post-cards!”Ironically, poor tyre maintenance is like-ly to end up costing more money overtime. Underinflated tyres not only wearout faster but are also responsible for anestimated 3.9 billion liters of wasted fueland 9.2 million tons of unnecessary CO2emissions per year. Which means in-creased cost for drivers and society as awhole. For more information, visit:

Shesaid: “When you’re thinking of set-ting up a new venture or growing anexisting business, you need to findout what supports are out there forenterprise. The aim behind ‘Who totalk to’ was to simply bring thoseseeking supports together with thoseoffering the supports, all under thesame roof.”There were five food focussed semi-nars in the programme, startingwith: ‘Developing Export Opportu-nities for Irish Food & Drink’ withStephanie Moe from Bord Bia; TomDoorley shared his thoughts and in-sights around getting media atten-tion for food businesses; CaoimheNi Dhuibhinn from Fáilte Irelandhighlighted the opportunities aroundfood tourism; the ‘Retail FoodLandscape’ in Ireland, according tothe Kantar World Panel, was thetopic of David Berry’s seminar and‘Starting an on-Farm Food Busi-ness’ was discussed by Teagasc’sEddie O’Neill.‘Who to Talk To’ was officiallyopened by restaurant critic, TomDoorley and took place at theThurles Chamber Enterprise Centre(LIT Campus).Further information about the year-round enterprise supports availablein Tipperary is available “Ideal” Location ForSmall BusinessPhotographed at the ‘Who To Talk To’event at Thurles Chamber Enterprise Cen-tre on Tuesday 14th May are left to right,John Commins, Irish Piemontese Beef,Veronica Molloy, Crossogue Preserves,Malachy Dorris, Lough Derg Chocolatesand Rita Guinan, Tipperary North CountyEnterprise Board.Joe MacGrath, County Manager, TomDoorley and Cllr Jonathan Meaney,Chair of the County Development Boardphotographed at the ‘Who To Talk To’event at Thurles Chamber EnterpriseCentre on Tuesday 14th May.First things first – it’s not about go-ing on ‘a diet’ – GRIN! That’s be-cause it’s about eating more of thegood foods and then your desires forprocessed and junk foods will auto-matically go away. Here’s your sim-ple guide to getting ready to feelingmore confident wearing your sun-shine permitting summer wardrobe,Make sure that at every meal youhave salad, fruit and/or vegetables.Hot Tip: Aim for the colours of therainbow - the more colours you in-clude the more vitamins and miner-als your body gets and the fuller youwill feelAt every meal you include some lowGI Carbs. Foods like oats or mueslifor breakfast, whole wheat wrap orgranary bread for lunch; sweet pota-toes, new potatoes, basmati rice andwhole grain pasta for dinnerHot Tip: A portion is about the sizeof a closed fist. More than this andyour belly will not get flatter!Make sure at every meal you includesome good quality protein e.g. tur-key, chicken, fish, lentils, beans, eggs. Hot Tip: Save some moneywhile you’re at it by swapping meatin meals for lentils and beans as theyare super cheapHealthy fats are really important tooe.g. salmon and sardines, olive oil orrapeseed oil, avocado, nuts andseeds. Hot Tip: For a great veggiedip, mash half an avocado, cherrytomatoes and red onion with limejuice and black pepper.Include low fat dairy products everyday. A study published in the Inter-national Journal of Obesity said,"People who get their calcium fromyogurt rather than from other sourc-es may lose more weight aroundtheir midsection." This is likely to bebecause of the probiotic bacteriafound in yoghurt keeps your diges-tive system healthy, which meansless gas, bloating and constipation, and therefore, a flatter tummy. HotTip: If you cannot tolerate dairy thenchoose soya, hazelnut or almondmilk and yoghurts instead to ensureyou still meet your calcium require-ments.Cut down on alcohol. Thinking of‘beer belly’ – yes it’s true. Alcoholmakes you store fat around yourstomach. Hot Tip: Drink water inbetween drinks to help you drinkless alcohol and avoid a hangover!Make sure you’re not bloated. Thetop things to cut out if you are bloat-ed are fizzy drinks, chewing gum, salty foods (e.g. fast food, processedfoods, crisps) and gassy vegetableslike brussel sprouts and cabbage.Hot Tip: If you have problems withgrains or other foods and bloatingthen a dietitian can help you (seecontact details below)Drink more water! Keeping hydratedis possibly one of the easiest andmost beneficial things you can do foryour body. Hot Tip: Next timeyou’re hungry try having a glass ofwater first as your body may bethirsty not hungry. To get a flatter tummy try to includethe foods mentioned here– if you’restruggling with achieving this whynot make an appointment to attend anutrition consultation with Lorraine,an expert in helping you change yourdiet habits for good!Based at the Wilton Medical Centre,Nenagh. This is proba-bly the number one benefit ofgrowing your own and now with therange of organic plant foods availableon the market you can ensure only thebest ingredients go into making thefruit and veg that you eat at home.Organic plant food contain only natu-ral ingredients and no synthetic orman made chemicals or compoundsare added. Therefore the nutrients yougive your plants are just as nature in-tended and are unlikely to have anynegative impact on your health orwell being. There has been much said about thebenefits of eating organic foods, somepositive, some negative. Many havesuggested that organic food is of noadditional nutrient benefit than com-mercially produced foods. Howeverthere has been much evidence to sug-gest that organic food has been foundto be higher in antitoxins and phyto-chemicals.This coupled with the fact that organ-ic foods do not contain syntheticchemicals such as preservatives, weedkillers, fertilizers, herbicides or hor-mones means that eating organic canonly be better for your healthGrowing your own vegetables can be100% organic too. Just eliminate allchemicals from your gardening prac-tices and convert to organic equiva-lents. Use organic certified seeds, useorganic plant foods, and farm yardmanure, use natural pest controls andpest barriers, grow vegetables suitedto your soil and live with a certainamount of pest damage.Organic plant foods such as Baby Bioplant food contains the same balanceof essential nutrients as common syn-thetic multi purpose plant foods. Thenutrients of Nitrogen, Potassium andPhosphorous can all be found andwill support plant growth includingits roots, foliage, buds, flowers andfruits.Plants and soil prefer organic plantfood as it breaks down slower in thesoil giving a more steady and contin-uous feed. While synthetic feeds offera quick burst of nutrients and thendwindle down to nothing just whenthe plant requires it the most. Organicfeeds do not interfere with the soilsmicro organisms and will not kill orharm our hard working worms whichare essential for good soils and de-composition of organic waste. There are a range of pellet and liquidfeeds available to suit your owngrowing method. A liquid feed can beapplied continuously over the grow-ing season or you can apply it hydro-ponicaly to indoor grown plantsGranular or pelleted feeds can be ap-plied to soil at time of soil preparationor sowing of seed or transplants andcan again be applied as a top dressingduring the growing season.Peace of mind withorganic plant foodTo create perfectly natural markers, write the names of plants (using a per-manent marker) on the flat faces of stones of various sizes and place them ator near the base of your plants.Handy Gardening Tip

I was visiting a friendof mind that has a dog that spendsmost of its time indoors and in thisartificial environment he sheds a lotof hair. Each morning the floor ismopped and the brush is left outsideto dry. For the last few weeks a beau-tiful pair of bluetits have been care-fully removing the hairs for theirnest. Also when the dryer is finishedshe hangs the fluff outside and theJackdaws fight for this to make awarm and dry lining for their eggs.Next door there is a tall hotel andthrough the open skylight I heard theexcited calls of the swifts. These aresummer migrants from Africa andarrive later than swallows. I saw myfirst one on the fifth of May and bythe end of August they will have re-turned home. These are true citybirds and could nearly be renamed“street swifts”.They have a very distinctive shapewhen flying (like an old fashionedsickle) with a narrow body andcurved wings that are built for speedand endurance. They can reach up totwo hundred miles per hour and mostof their lives are spent beneath theclouds. I have never seen them perch-ing on the ESB wires like swallowsbecause all of their toes on their feetare pointing forward and this ar-rangement prevents them form land-ing. On swallows three toes arepointing forward and one long toebackwards and his allows them to geta good grip.Swifts are aerial specialists and forthe first two years of their lives theyrarely touch the ground. I have readreports of people who have watchedswifts disappearing high in sky atdusk above their roosting spots andnot returning even when it becamefully dark. This has lead to the theorythat they sleep in the night skies.Mating also takes place mid air and ifbirds lands on the ground he will findit very difficult to take off.A few years ago I got a call from aguard in my local station. They hadleft a window open and a bird hadcome in and crashed into the wall. Itwas stunned but appeared to be unin-jured. I was asked what they shoulddo. I knew that swifts nested in thebuilding so I suggested leaving thebird in an open box on a high win-dow sill and when it had recovered itwould fly away. Sure enough when Ichecked in the following day it flownto safety. While swallows might make a sum-mer for me the swift is the sound ofholidays. Fearless in flight they chaseeach other just skimming the tops ofthe traffic and shrieking loudly all thetime. There were once known as dev-ils swallows and screech martin.Nests are built under the eves inbuildings, in old castles and rarely intrees. Then it uses its own saliva toglue the structure together. Only onebrood is raised during the breedingseason and the chicks are fed on arich protein diet of insects. These arecaught by the adults who like thewhales in the seas fly around withmouths open catching flies. The inside of the mouth is sticky andthis traps the insects. Once they havea full crop they return to the nest tofeed their brood. Swifts nest in colo-nies and return to the same site eachyear. The Urban Countryside - The Swift by Albert Nolan

In no circumstances shall thetotal liability of the Publisher for any error, misprint or omission exceed the agreed netcost of the advertisementThe importance of exerciseThere are, however, less expensiveways to ease anxiety. One of these isto join support groups, although this isdifficult for those with social phobia.People with similar complaints aremore understanding of your condition, and you will experience empathy fromother sufferers. You can also learnabout how they cope. If you sufferfrom social phobia, it would be a wayto become desensitised and ease thefear that goes with that type of anxie-ty. More of that later. Alternatively, you may wish to use chat rooms on theinternet to share your experiences withother sufferers. Of course, you do notknow the individuals on the internet, and you cannot be sure of their bonafides, so you must be careful if youdecide to use chat rooms. Ultimately, using counselling is a safer way ofdealing with anxiety. In many cases, anxiety can be expelledquickly. For example, my experienceis that people who take on the worriesand cares of others find themselvesplagued by anxious feelings. Theyseem to absorb the anxiety of others. This is most likely a boundaries issue.Such individuals may have spongyboundaries and easily soak up the neg-ative feelings of others, especially thefeelings of family members or closerelatives. Interestingly, I have foundthat it is not too difficult to learn aboutboundaries, and to begin erecting themas a protection against anxiety. It is,however, very difficult to erect bound-aries when our children are concerned. While anxiety can be eased in manycases, if, on the other hand, it stemsfrom negative experiences in earlychildhood, then the process is longerand more uncertain. This type of ex-treme anxiety often seems like beingcrazy, and can lead to addictions andalcoholism. Such sufferers flee frommemories of their childhood, dissoci-ate, are eternally busy, cannot rest, always feel uneasy, and never feelpeace. Dealing with this requires time, patience and practise.I believe, for example, that exercise isone of the best ways to relieve anxiety.Walking, running, gym-work, andswimming are all good ways to relievetension. I always spend 40 minutes perday exercising. There are morningswhen I do not feel like it but I haveconditioned myself to exercise everyday except Sunday. I go for a longwalk on Saturday and from Monday toFriday I spend half an hour on what iscalled a cross trainer, which is a verydemanding exercise. I combine thiswith some work with weights, whichhelps maintain muscle. I follow thiswith sit-ups, which tighten abdomenmuscles. This gives me more energy, more satisfaction and more enthusi-asm, and it clears my head for the dayahead. I generally sit down to writeimmediately following my period ofexercise, and find that I can work forhours at the computer without feelingtired or bored. I find, too, that my bodyis much stronger than it would be forsomeone of my age. I do a lot of setdancing, which can be energy sapping, but dancing eight or nine sets over a 3or 4 hour period is not a problem forme. There is now plenty of evidencethat exercise helps to prolong our life, and gives us a good quality of life overa long period. It is good for the heartand the lungs, and helps us to sleepbetter, but it must be done on a regularbasis, that is why it is helpful to under-stand how exercise reduces anxiety(and stress). This gives us motivationwhen we do not feel inclined to takeexercise.Exercise helps to expel toxins fromour body. Any form of exercise helpsto remove these poisonous substances,as it increases oxygen to the cells andstimulates better circulation. Exercisealso releases endorphins into the bloodthat create a sense of well being.Endorphins are hormones within thebrain and are produced by the pituitarygland and the hypothalamus (part ofthe brain). Clearly, exercise alsolessens muscle tension, which oftenaccompanies anxiety, and bringsabout a sense of relaxation. We haveto find what the best relaxing exerciseis for us. Sometimes ‘violent’exercise, for example, using a punchbag only increases negative feelingsuch as anger.Jim O’Shea works as a counsellorfrom Furze, Thurles. Jim O’Shea’sbook ‘When a child dies.
