The computer company, where my
wife works, distributed a corpo-
rate-clothing catalogue that includ-
ed a pair of cuff links. One was
inscribed Ctrl (Control) and the
other Esc (Escape), just as they
look on a computer keyboard.
"They would make a good present
for any man," my wife commented
to a colleague, "if only to remind
him of the two things he can never
have."
A husband and wife were driving
down a country lane on their way
to visit some friends. They came to
a muddy patch in the road and the
car became bogged. After a few
minutes of trying to get the car out
by themselves, they saw a young
farmer coming down the lane, driv-
ing a tractor. He stopped when he
saw the couple in trouble and of-
fered to pull the car out of the mud
for €50. The husband accepted and
minutes later the car was free.
The farmer turned to the husband
and said, "You know, you're the
tenth car I've helped out of the mud
today."
The husband looks around at the
fields incredulously and asks the
farmer, "When do you have time to
plough your land? At night?"
"No," the young farmer replied se-
riously, "Night is when I put the
water in the hole"
The businessman dragged himself
home and barely made it to his
chair before he dropped, exhaust-
ed.
His sympathetic wife was right
there with a tall cool drink and a
comforting word.
"My, you look tired," she said.
"You must have had a hard day
today. What happened to make you
so exhausted?"
"It was terrible," her husband said,
"The computer broke down and all
of us had to do our own thinking."
A blind guy on a bar stool shouts
to the bartender, "Wanna hear a
blonde joke?"
In a hushed voice, the guy next to
him says, "Before you tell that
joke, you should know some-
thing."
"Our bartender IS blonde, the
bouncer is blonde. I'm a 6' tall, 200
lb black belt. The guy sitting next
to me is 6'2", weighs 225, and he's
a rugby player. The fella to your
right is 6'5" pushing 300 and he's a
wrestler. Each one of US is blonde.
Think about it, Mister. Do you still
wanna tell that joke?"
The blind guy says, "Nah, not if
I'm gonna have to explain it five
times."

behind the camera ahead of the
Irish Cancer Society X-HALE
Youth Awards
Pictured are members from Tipper-
ary Youth Project who recently at-
tended a film-making workshop in
Mayfield, Cork ahead of their entry
to the X-HALE Youth Awards 2015.
X-HALE is an initiative developed
by the Irish Cancer Society to en-
courage young people to take action
on the issue of smoking in their own
communities.
As part of X-HALE, the Irish Can-
cer Society hosts the annual X-
HALE Youth Awards which sees
youth groups from around the coun-
try enter community action projects
and film projects around the issue of
smoking. Tipperary Youth Project
attended the filming workshop in
preparation of their film entries to
the X-HALE Youth Awards in the
summer to learn about film produc-
ing and editing.
In total this year, 36 groups have
received funding from the Society
and a further 15 groups have re-
ceived training support. The Society
has awarded over €123,000 to youth
groups and organisations through the
X-HALE Youth Awards to create
smoking related community aware-
ness projects since the initiative
started five years ago.

Works, an initiative which encour-
ages SMEs with cutting-edge prod-
ucts, solutions and applications that
could be used in the foodservice,
hospitality and facilities manage-

initiative aims to find the best inno-
vative new concepts and helps get
them off the ground.
From today, companies in Tipper-
ary who believe they have a new or
novel product to offer can submit
their ‘winning’ concepts via a dedi-
cated website www.compass-
ideaworks.ie. Compass Group Ire-
land will then shortlist the best ide-
as and invite those selected to pitch
their big idea before a judging panel
at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday
23rd July. If finalists get three yes
votes from the judges, Compass
Group Ireland will support them on
the introduction of their idea to the
Compass Group Ireland business
and potentially to the wider market
- opening up a wealth of opportuni-
ties.

sion or refurbishment of existing
buildings to enterprise space. The
Local Enterprise Office would like to
inform you of the Community Enter-
prise Initiative which is currently
open for applications
The overarching goal of the €5m
Community Enterprise Initiative
Fund is to stimulate and support en-
terprise and job creation at a local,
community and regional level.
This fund is part of the Government’s
€250m Regional Enterprise Develop-
ment Initiative aimed at accelerating
economic recovery in every part of
the country.
The competitive call for applications
is open to new and existing organisa-
tions, groups and alliances, who col-
laboratively seek to promote
entrepreneurship, create jobs, foster
innovation and enhance export op-
portunities for small business. A pre-
requisite for proposals is the need to
demonstrate innovative solutions to
fostering and creating employment.
Priority will be given to new ap-
proaches that build on, and strength-
en, the entrepreneurial ecosystem
throughout the country.
Through the utilisation of existing
infrastructure and the leveraging of
nationally available enterprise sup-
ports, the specific objectives of the
scheme include:
· Fostering an increased collabo-
rative, networked and linked ap-
proach to regional and local
enterprise development and job crea-
tion
· Establishment of hubs, acceler-
ators, networks and clusters or other
partnerships based on regional
strengths, opportunities and unique-
ness. Within this is the establishment
of partnership activities where inno-
vative start-ups can be established in
a supportive network before graduat-
ing to other support mechanisms or
self-sufficiency
· Proactively seeking out, en-
couraging and supporting applica-
tions from economically
disadvantaged areas and areas facing
potential economic shock to foster
potential opportunities for job crea-
tion and supporting enterprise
· Promotion of a progression
pathway for companies as they start,
develop and scale.

applications on Friday 15th May
2015. The closing date for applica-
tions is 6pm, Friday, 10th July 2015.

This year's Long Way To Tipperary Festival
takes place on Friday 17th and Saturday
18th July 2015. On Wednesday 15th July,
two fringe events take place, The Lions
Club Penalty Shootout featuring
the 2015 Prides of Tipperary and a talk by
Dr Denis Marnane in Tipperary Excel about
the importance of the Tipperary Barracks in
the first World War.
An open afternoon will take place
in Dalton's Heritage House on Friday 17th
July. The Heats of the All Ireland Churn
Rolling take place followed by a Ceili and a
Pub Trad Trail. On Saturday 18th July Al-
bert Nolan and Dan Hogan will give their
nature tour of Tipperary Hills.
A Food & Craft Fair will take
place in the Market Yard from 10.00 am to
4.00 p.m. Educational classes for kids and

Tipperary Festival 2015

Borrisoleigh Festival is back again
this year at the earlier dates of July
24th, 25th and 26th.. There is a great
line up of events planned for the
weekend with live music in The
Square each night. On Friday night 4
piece band Acoustra will take to the
stage. On Saturday a variety concert
with local talent starts at 7.30pm. Af-
terwards you can get your Salsa on
with the Latin fusion sounds of Ochy
Calderon. Sunday has social dancing
in The Square with The Castle Trio
followed by local legends Ebony.
There are a host of activities and
events planned for the weekend.
Mack’s Funfair will be in attendance
all weekend (swingboats anyone?).
The Tomas Max Camogie Tourna-
ment takes place on Friday evening.
On Saturday there is a line dancing
exhibition and class in the Square
along with walks on the Devils Bit
and Latteragh woods, historical walk-
ing tour of Borrisoleigh and a food
and craft fair in the Square and churn
racing later in the evening. On Sun-
day there is a Family Fun Day with
something for everyone, Strong Man
Display, Sheaf Tossing, Bubble Soc-
cer, Vintage Cars, games of skill,
plus lots lots more. Keep an eye on

The clock is rapidly winding down
towards the Gaelic Grounds for the
senior hurlers of Tipperary who meet
Limerick in the Munster semi-final on
Sunday June 21st, at 4pm.
It may be Mid Summers Day, but in
many people’s eyes the summer will
only be beginning as Eamon O’Shea
and his team of Mick Ryan, Paudie
O’Neill and Declan Fanning show
their hand in the ring and hope that the
plans in place are enough to deliver a
knockout blow to the Treaty men’s
aspiration of reaching the provincial
decider on July 14th, even a standing
count will do.
Though nine weeks since the side last
saw competitive action, last year’s en-
counter against Limerick at the same
stage will probably bear greater signif-
icance by the time Sunday week
comes round.
Munster Intermediate Hurling
Semi-final
The Tipperary Intermediate hurlers
line out against Limerick at 2pm in the
Gaelic Grounds, also on Sunday 21st,
before the senior clash. A difficult
enough task awaits the side that have
had to reply on challenge games to
give an indication of form while Lim-
erick will have had their quarter-final
experience to gauge their momentum.
That aside, the strength of this Tipper-
ary outfit should give manager John
Carroll and his management team
plenty of selection headaches ahead of
the fixture.
Munster Minor Hurling Semi-
final
Tipperary will play Clare in the Elec-
tric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling
Championship Semi-Final on Wednes-
day June 24th at 7.30pm in Semple
Stadium.
New Tipperary GAA Draw
After a brief interlude to give clubs
added time, the new Tipperary GAA
draw is up and running following its
launch in Hayes’ Hotel, Thurles, last
Friday night. Tipperary Co. Board is
delighted to report that the member-
ship held up over the 16,000 as once
again the clubs responded positively to
the improved commission rates and
the very attractive prize fund. Thanks
to all our club co-ordinators and pro-
moters for their great efforts over the
last few weeks.
The two main prizes went to two Mid
Tipperary clubs, with John Costelloe
from Lahardan, Littleton scooping the
first prize sold by Jim Fogarty and
John Hackett from Moycarkey Borris
and second prize went to Nora
O’Grady from Hughall, Castleliney
and Nora’s ticket was sold by Jim No-
lan of the Loughmore Castleiney club.
Premier Plan
Tipperary County Board launched a 5
year strategic plan in 2011 to guide the
development of the GAA in Tipperary.
Called the Premier Plan, it focused on
the development of our games, clubs,
facilities and the achievement of great-
er success at inter-county level.
Association with Tipperary GAA is
association with success, with tradi-
tion, with progress and with the na-
tion’s strongest sporting brand, the
GAA.
The County Board needs to develop
additional income streams to achieve
our ambitious but realistic goals.
Therefore the Tipperary County Board
are seeking commercial sponsorship to
do this.
Next up on the agenda therefore is the
Team Tipperary GAA Race Day at the
Galway Races on July 27th next. The
Galway Races Summer Festival is re-
nowned as a premier and most colour-
ful racing festival.
While it is a major sporting event, it
also appeals to a much wider audience
than just the racing fans.

Micheál Hassett and Karl McLough-
ney recently qualified as Irish
Squash Club Coaches (equivalent to
UKCC Level 2) after five days of
training at Mount Pleasant Squash
Club in Dublin. This course was de-
livered by Irish Squash Tutor Elvy
De Costa and saw 9 new coaches
from throughout Ireland trained
up.The course involved monitored
coaching sessions, a written exam
and a rules test. Thurles Squash Club
are proud to have 4 qualified squash

I believe that having meaning in our life is
fundamental to our happiness. Even at our
most hopeless and helpless, we can find
meaning. I also believe that having meaning
is a good antidote to anxiety. When he was
in a concentration camp the great
psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, survived
because he found meaning, even though
most of his close relatives perished under
the Nazi regime. He married in 1942, but in
September of that year, Viktor, his wife,
parents, and brother, were all arrested, and
interned at Theresienstadt in Bohemia. His
father starved to death there. His mother
and brother were killed at Auschwitz in
1944. His wife died at Bergen-Belsen in
1945. Only his sister Stella survived
because she had emigrated to Australia a
short while earlier. Yet he found meaning in
life. His wife had died, but she lived in him.
We can be free in our minds irrespective of
our suffering and our circumstances.
Existential means experiential or dealing
with existence especially human existence.
Therefore, existential anxiety, which is
widespread, is about failing to face some of
the many life crises that all of us inevitably
experience. And what are these crises? For
some it might be a powerful fear of
growing old, for others an associated fear
of death. Death arouses the ultimate
existential fear. We may be paralysed at
the idea of loss, and all of us suffer loss.
We are all the children of someone, and our
parents die. Of all the anxieties, this
fundamental one can evoke a very positive
and inherent response by us as human
beings. In other words, this type of
anxiety, painful though it is, is part of life
for all of us. Putting it another way, if we
are anxious about death, we may be more
inclined to explore life in a fuller way.
However, if our fear of death is
debilitating, then the anxiety has become
neurotic. Its roots do not lie in
existentialism, but is some other area, such
as childhood difficulties or other trauma.
There are many other life crises that we
may fear, for example, we may have to face
great loneliness, we may struggle in
forming a relationship, we may have
problems in our relationships, we may fear
pain and illness, we may have a fear of
responsibility, and so on. These are all
existential crises. Existential counselling
emphasises personal freedom and
responsibility. It is about choices.
Existential anxiety leads to emptiness,
loneliness, and guilt. Its roots lie in four
fears – fear of death, fear of creating guilt,
fear of having a meaningless life, and fear
of isolation. This might include fear of
spiritual emptiness. During the lamentably
materialistic ethos and greed of the Celtic
Tiger years, I imagine there was a
significant amount of spiritual emptiness.
We are spiritual beings (I do not mean
religious beings as such), and spiritual
emptiness is a painful experience.
Spiritually means awareness of something
higher, a higher power. This may be God to
millions of people, but it can also mean a
sense of connectedness to the universe, or
an awareness of the beauty of nature. If you
like poetry you might like to read some of
William Wordsworth’s poetry, which
explores the spirit and the beauty of nature.
Spirituality is something that brings you
outside of yourself, where you get lost, for
example, in the loveliness of nature, or the
strangeness of a misty morning. I think that
Wordsworth saw nature as a higher power
that brought him peace and consolation.
You may not have fully understood his
poetry when you were at school, but
consider the lines that nature is ‘a motion
and a spirit that impels all thinking things,
all objects of all thoughts and flows
through all things’. This is how he
expressed the calmness he got from his
memory of nature
But oft, in lonely rooms, and 'mid the din
Of towns and cities, I have owed to them
In hours of weariness, sensations sweet,
Felt in the blood, and felt along the heart;
And passing even into my purer mind,
With tranquil restoration: —
What a lovely line - ‘tranquil restoration’.
The very opposite to a state of anxiety. We
live in a rushed world that is getting smaller
and smaller. We are inundated with bad
news from every corner of the globe. All
instantly transmitted into our living rooms.
Perhaps, poetry is a creative way to deal
with existential anxiety. When my child was
killed in 1990, I wrote some poetry that still
gives me consolation. We all have the gift of
writing poetry.
