On Friday last, Minister for Environ-
ment Community and Local Govern-
ment Alan Kelly TD launched Tipperary
Enterprise Week, which will run from
Monday, May 18 to Friday, May 22
next. An estimated 500 entrepreneurs are
expected to attend 21 events across the
County during the week.
Enterprise Week is an initiative of the
Local Enterprise Office Tipperary, Tip-
perary County Council, in association
with Enterprise Ireland, Teagasc, North
Tipperary Leader Partnership, South
Tipperary Development Company, De-
partment of Social Protection, LIT and
the Education and Training Board Tip-
perary.
For anyone thinking of starting or ex-
panding a business or for those who may
have found themselves unemployed and
are looking at self employment as an
option the “Who to Talk To” events on
Monday, May 18 in Clonmel and Thurs-
day, May 21in Roscrea are a must. The
events featuring funding workshops and
information stands will provide attend-
ees with the opportunity to meet with all
of the agencies charged with supporting
enterprise start up and development in
the county.
Some of the highlights during the week
will include a Retail Symposium in
Nenagh which brings together leading
retail experts to look at the challenges
and opportunities facing the Retail Sec-
tor. A Tourism seminar in Cahir on
Tuesday, May 19 focusing on the value
of tourism to Tipperary is a not to be
missed opportunity to hear from sectoral
experts and to network with product pro-
viders. The week will conclude with an
Economic Prospects Breakfast for owner
/ managers at which they can look be-
yond the horizon with Philip Boucher
Hayes, Broadcaster and Journalist and
John Finn of Treasury Solutions.
Clinics, will feature strongly throughout
the week and include Agri Business with
Teagasc, Energy Efficiency with Tipper-
ary Energy Agency, Business Advice on
Start up and Expansion with the Local
Enterprise Office and Supports for the
unemployed to move to self employment
with the Department of Social Protec-
tion.
Networking will feature strongly during
Enterprise Week with dedicated events
taking place such as the Regional Wom-
en in Business event in Adare and a
Green Business 2 Business event in
Thurles.
Promotion of all events will be in con-
junction with interest groups, Chambers,
Business Associations and Municipal
Districts. Tipperary Enterprise Week
runs from Monday, May 18 to Friday,

Brian Boru was assassinated in
the battle of Clontarf 1014 -
This plays tells a very personal
tale about a brotherly bond but
it also captures a seminal event
in Irish history. It’s a story of
brotherhood, blood, ravens on
the battle field and the death of
a great king.
Two brothers of conflicting
ideals sail to Ireland to defeat
the High King Brian Boru.
Over the course of the journey
they part enemies, and meet
again on opposite sides of the
battlefield. Brodir and Ospak
are respected warriors, two
brothers of vastly different
temperament who have fought
side by side in many battles
throughout their lives.
On their journey to Ireland they
are plagued by omens, iron
beaked ravens and showers of
spears and blood. Cracks begin
to scar their accord. The omens
tell Ospak that they find them-
selves on the wrong side, but
Brodir is dogged in his hunger
for victory and power. The
voyage breaks them as brothers
and allies. Ospak deserts his
brother to convert to Christian-
ity and fight on the side of the
good King. The brothers meet
on the battlefield after Boru is
killed, and in the bloodthirsty
mess of the fight even the clari-
ty of death is shaken.

A new trail showcasing the rich
natural heritage of Lough Derg has been
developed in time for the 2015 summer
season.
Lough Derg (on the Shannon)
Nature Trail is produced by the County
Councils in Clare, Galway and Tipperary,
and co-funded by The Heritage Council
and Lakelands & Inland Waterways.
The 130-kilometre trail takes
visitors from Portumna in Galway down
the western shore of the lake, to Killaloe in
Clare, and back up on the eastern side to
Terryglass in Tipperary. The stops along
the route, which can be travelled in any
direction, include walking routes, lake-
shore access, great bird watching locations,
woodland parks for adventuring, and quiet
spots to enjoy the beautiful vistas of Ire-
land's third largest lake and the largest lake
in the River Shannon system.
Among the 24 discovery points
featured is the monastic site at Inis Cealtra
- known as the “Jewel of the Lough' - as
well as the ancient woodlands of Portumna
Forest Park, Derrycrag Wood, Raheen
Wood and Cominchas Forest, the sheltered
bays and harbours at Rosmore, Mount-
shannon and Garrykennedy, and the twin
heritage towns of Killaloe-Ballina.
Each of the discovery sites se-
lected for inclusion in the Lough Derg Na-
ture Trail featured in the Natural Heritage
Audit of Lough Derg (on the Shannon)
produced by Dr Allan Mee and Shane
O’Neill and written by Dr. Janice Fuller.
The trail project meanwhile, was directed
by the three County Council Heritage Of-
ficers in the region, Marie Mannion (Gal-
way), Congella McGuire (Clare) and
Roisín O Grady (Tipperary), and Nuala
O’Connell (Senior Executive Planner, Tip-
perary County Council).

Derg (on the Shannon) Nature Trail in-
clude Portumna Water Recreation Park,
Portumna Forest Park, Abbeyville Golden
Mile, Derrycrag Wood, Rosmore Pier
(Galway), Coos-East Clare Way,

liamstown, Church Bay, Mountshannon,
Inis Cealtra, Woodpark, Raheen Wood,
Aughinish Wood, Ballycuggaran Forest &
Rinnaman Point (Clare) Killaloe-Ballina
(Clare/Tipperary) Castletown (The Look-

Children depend on their parents for
emotional stability, and any
behaviours or events that create
instability can lead to adult insecurity
and serious anxiety in adulthood.
Emotional insecurity can be sown in
the core, if parents reject a child
through withdrawal (for example if
they are addicts), their inability to
meet the emotional needs of the child,
abuse, or being physically absent
through separation, and so on. This is
disastrous to the psyche of the child,
and can have utterly catastrophic
effects when this child become an
adult. I have highlighted this in my
book, Abuse. Domestic Violence,
Workplace and School Bullying.
Edmund Bourne also makes a good
point when he associates adult anxiety
to a childhood situation where parents
do not allow their children to express
their feelings. Children may be
forbidden, for example, to cry. Parents
may see crying as a type of rebellion.
Certainly, any child of abusive
parents, who is a rebel, will suffer the
consequences. Some children defend
themselves by becoming the ‘good’
child, the ‘obedient’ child. Having to
bury feelings catches up on such
children in adulthood when there is
every danger that they will suffer from
anxiety and depression. If, as I said,
parental negative behaviours are
continuous, they create psychological
pandemonium in the child with lethal
consequences in later life.
Apart from childhood, any negative
behaviour in an adult relationship will
foster anxiety. For example, victims of
long term marital/partner abuse will
eventually be enveloped by anxiety.
Generalised Anxiety may also lead to
unhealthy behaviours. Some sufferers
may drink more to ease the anxiety,
but alcohol affects the nervous system,
and as its effects wear off the anxiety
returns and may be accompanied by
depression. Smokers may use this
addiction to deal with anxiety, and,
like any drug, it will have to be taken
in greater and greater quantities to
suppress the feelings of unease that
accompany anxiety. Those afflicted
with this complaint develop other
unhealthy behaviours such as avoiding
work or school, not mixing with
others, having angry or aggressive
behaviour, and so on. It has been
found that people suffering from
Generalised Anxiety Disorder visit
doctors twice as often as non-
sufferers. It has also been found that
people with GAD are twice as likely
to be treated by gastroenterologists
(specialists who treat complaints of
the stomach, intestines and digestive
system), and psychiatrists. This may
be an indication of the somatic
(physical) symptoms often
experienced by sufferers.
It is important for people suffering
from GAD to seek help, not only
because it can be harmful to a person’s
health, but it can lead to suicide.
Because Generalised Anxiety is a state
of constant unease, watchfulness and
high arousal, sufferers can combat it
using gentle methods such as walking,
deep breathing, swimming, drinking
and smoking less, or even giving up
drink and cigarettes. Be conscious of
what anxiety is, and slow down.
Practice mindfulness (being in the
here and now), and have a good
balance between activity and rest,
between work and ‘play’. If you wish
to know more about mindfulness get
Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book, Full
Catastrophe Living: Using the
Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to
Face Stress, Pain, and Illness. This
wonderful book is not expensive, and
for some people in stressful jobs, it is
their bible.
