Sir: I haven't got a computer, but I
was told about Facebook and Twitter
and am trying to make friends out-
side Facebook and Twitter while ap-
plying the same principles.
Every day, I walk down the street
and tell passers-by what I have eaten,
how I feel, what I have done the
night before and what I will do for
the rest of the day. I give them pic-
tures of my wife, my daughter, my
dog and me gardening and on holi-
day, spending time by the pool. I
also listen to their conversations, tell
them I 'like' them and give them my
opinion on every subject that inter-
ests me.....whether it interests them
or not.
And it works. I already have four
people following me; two police of-
ficers, a social worker and a psychia-
trist.
A woman and her husband interrupt-
ed their holiday to go to the dentist.
"I want a tooth pulled, and I don't
want any anaesthetic because I'm in a
big hurry," the woman said. "Just ex-
tract the tooth as quickly as possible,
and we'll be on our way."
The dentist was quite impressed.
"You're certainly a courageous wom-
an," he said. "Which tooth is it?"
The woman turned to her husband
and said, "Show him your tooth,
dear."
On a rural road a garda pulled this
farmer over and said: "Sir, do you
realize your wife fell out of the car
several miles back?"
To which the farmer replied: "Thank
God, I thought I had gone deaf!"
Once upon a time there was a famous
sea captain. This captain was very
successful at what he did; for years
he guided merchant ships all over the
world. Never did stormy seas or pi-
rates get the best of him. He was ad-
mired by his crew and fellow
captains.
However, there was one thing differ-
ent about this captain. Every morning
he went through a strange ritual. He
would lock himself in his captain's
quarters and open a small safe. In the
safe was an envelope with a piece of
paper inside. He would stare at the
paper for a minute, then lock it back
up. Afterwards, he would go about
his daily duties. For years this went
on, and his crew became very curi-
ous.
Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter
from a long lost love? Everyone
speculated about the contents of the
strange envelope.
One day the captain died at sea. After
laying the captain's body to rest, the
first mate led the entire crew into the
captains quarters.
He opened the safe, got the envelope,
opened it and...
The first mate turned pale and
showed the paper to the others. Four
words were on the paper; two lines
with two words each:

For the fifth year running, the Irish
Craft Beer Festival returns to the RDS
in Dublin from the 27th – 29th August.
The craft beer and cider industry in Ire-
land has witnessed explosive growth
over the past 12 months – reflecting this
aptly, this festival has witnessed 400%
growth in both brewers and attendees
since its conception in 2011. Having
attracted over 12,000 visitors last year,
the organisers are once again predicting
a record turn-out of punters to reflect
the record number of breweries and ci-
der makers signed up to date.
This year’s line-up consists of over 50
breweries and cider makers – totalling
an astounding number of over 200 Irish
produced beverages on offer to attend-
ees. In comparison to last year’s 40 pro-
ducers, this year has seen an increase of
over 25% in the number of breweries
attending, a reflection of the massive
growth of this local Irish market sector.
This year’s festival promises to bring
visitors an experience that is unrivalled
throughout the country. It is the pinna-
cle of the year within the Irish craft beer
and cider industries. For three days,
each supplier sets up its own space
within the venue and chats with con-
sumers, enjoying discussions about the
intricacies of each unique combination
of flavours making every individual
product stand out from the next.

Recently appointed Minister for Social
Enterprise Ann Phelan TD, formally
launched Community Finance (Ire-
land) the new brand for one of the
largest providers of finance to the
community and voluntary sector on
the island of Ireland for the last 20
years.
Previously known as Ulster Communi-
ty Investment Trust (Ireland), Commu-
nity Finance (Ireland) is part of the
UCIT Group which has to date, invest-
ed more than €70 million in over 400
community and volunteer organisa-
tions across a range of sectors and
projects, including enterprise and
workspace projects, rural development
projects, childcare schemes, housing
associations, community transport,
energy & environmental initiatives and
sports and recreation facilities.
Donal Traynor, Associate Director of
Community Finance (Ireland) said
“Our organisation is a volunteer led
organisation which was established in
response to the decreasing financial
support and the difficulties experi-
enced by community organisations in
accessing finance. With over €100
million available in funding, Commu-
nity Finance (Ireland) is targeting or-

not access finance from traditional
lenders like banks or building socie-

The launch of “The Boy Wonder of
Hurling” the story of Tipperary hurl-
ing legend the late Jimmy Doyle,
will take place at Thurles Sarsfields’
Social Centre on Wednesday August
19th at 7.30 pm.

ary Star Editor, Michael Dundon, the
book is published by Sliabh Ban Pro-
ductions, which is headed up by
RTE GAA

It will be launched by the President
of the GAA, Aogan Ó Fearghaill be-
fore a gathering that will include a
host of GAA celebrities, past and
current.
The book was to have been launched
in July but due to the untimely pass-
ing of Jimmy in June, was re-sched-
uled for August.

New fiction: 'Aloysius Tempo'
by journalist Jason Johnson from Liberties Press
Jason Johnson is a Northern Ireland-based
journalist and author. His debut novel,
Woundlicker (2005), was a ferociously
raw story set in fraught Belfast times. His
second book, Alina (2006), won him a
reputation for his distinctively gritty style
of writing. His third book, Sinker (2014),
built on that reputation, with the Irish In-
dependent hailed it, “a jolt to the senses”.
Aloysius Tempo is his fourth novel.
On Sunday the 23rd August Clonoulty
Rossmore Vintage Club will hold their
Annual Vintage Rally in Clonoulty Vil-
lage, Cashel, Co. Tipperary by kind
permission of Joe and Helen Hamers-
ley. This is our 15th Annual Rally we
have raised over €270,000 for the Hos-
pice Movement since our inception, last
year we presented €12,000; we have
also given €15,000 to other national
and local charities. A fun day is guaran-
teed, all ages are catered for.
There will be onsite catering and toilet
facilities the usual side shows and stalls
(Pets corner, Bric a Brac, bicycle obsta-
cle course, guess the weight of the bul-
lock, bouncy castle etc.) will cater for
all tastes and needs.
The theme of this year’s rally is’ rolling
back the years’, there will be gardening
demonstration showing how to sow and
tend vegetables using vintage farm
equipment. Butter and bread making
demonstrations will take place through-
out the day. If you are the owner of any
gardening or cooking utensils we
would love to hear from you and ar-
range to display them.
Other fun items will be the tug of war
competition and sheaf throwing which
are great sports for spectators. Our
Cashel Express train will also be on
display which is very popular with both
young and old.
For all you dog enthusiasts there will
be a dog show on site.
The annual motorcycle run will depart
from Simon’s at 2pm (entrance fee
€20.00)
Last year there was an increase in the
number of cars exhibited on other years
last year, the oldest cars there were a
1920 Humber owned by Michael Ryan,
Slatefield. A large number of cars have
registered to attend this year and will
provide a great opportunity for all car
enthusiasts.
The threshing is always a great favour-
ite with the crowd; John Leamy’s, Du-
alla Allan Bros 1925 Threshing Mill
will be at full throttle powered by TJ
Donnelly’s, Clonoulty David Brown
950 Implematic. Credit is due to the
large number of tractor owners who
turn up year after year with their fantas-
tic array of tractor makes and models
all in gleaming condition.

number of trade stands, whom we
would like to thank for their support. If

will drive through 900KM of Irish open roads
through Dublin, Leitrim, Sligo, The Wild Atlantic
Way, Killaloe, Killarney, Cahir and finishing in
Wexford. The spectacular convoy will be more im-
pressive than ever with free family Festivals all over
the country and over 150,000 spectators are expect-
ed to line the streets all over Ireland.

Last weekend, in Tullamore, our
County Ladies & Men's teams pro-
duced superb sets of results
in the final of the National League, to
record first & second placing's re-
spectively.
The ladies team (pictured below) had
been in top form during the prelimi-
nary rounds, going into
the final in top position (Division 1),
while our men's team did likewise,
going into the final in second
position (Premier Division).
After all the events were completed
& all scores were calculated, there
were great celebrations in the
Tipperary camp as our ladies were
crowned National champions & our
men claimed silver & included
themselves amongst the top athletes
in the country.
Congratulations to all our Tipperary
athletes & their coaches, clubs, men-
tors, managers & organisers on
their monumental achievements.
No doubt, both teams will be looking
for a sponsor for the equivalent In-
door competition in a few months
time.

The National Senior athletics cham-
pionships took place last weekend, in
Morton stadium, Santry, Dublin.
Tipperary recorded some fine results,
with Peter Ryan, Nenagh, & John
Dwyer, Templemore, claiming gold
& silver
in the Men's 56Lbs. weight for
Height & both athletes were also on
the podium for the 56Lbs Weight for
Distance,
with Peter taking silver, & John tak-
ing bronze.
Tom Hennessy qualified for the final
of the Men's 800m & finished 7th. in
a top quality field, in a time of
1:53.80.

Tipperary Athletics Thriving
Both the Tipperary County Women's & Men's teams stormed to gold & sil-
ver victories at the National League Final in Tullamore on Sunday 2nd Au-
gust. Our Women's team topped Division 1 while our Men's team won silver
in the Premier Division behind Clonliffe A.C. with St. Abbans A.C. in 3rd
place. Having been absent from this competition since 2011, the County re-
turned to the League in spectacular fashion. Both teams were packed with
well established & novice athletes, add to that the brilliant work put in by
the County team managers & co-ordinators & it gave a stunning set of re-
sults. Well done to all for your commitment & hard work.

March in Nenagh against water charges
In the early hours of Monday (Au-
gust 3rd) news spread quickly
throughout Devil’s Bit Macra and
into North Tipperary that Helen Hay-
es had been placed third in this
year’s International Miss Macra fes-
tival in Dundrum. The announce-
ment was made at the final night of
the Festival in Dundrum House Ho-
tel. The good news saw club mem-
bers along with members from North
Tipperary Macra, Helen’s family,
friends and other supporters go wild
with excitement. It brought to an end
a very busy weekend for Helen.

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)
Social phobia differs from
Generalised Social Anxiety Disorder,
which is an anxiety whereby people
feel anxious in most social situations,
where a sufferer fears he/she will be
scrutinised and judged. Social
phobia, however, is connected to
specific situations, and unfortunately,
is a very common complaint. It is
reckoned that 1 in 20 of young and
old suffer from social phobia, which
might include a fear of going to
parties, celebrations, going to class,
dating, going to restaurants, or
reading in class. Many of us might be
nervous doing some of these (for
example, public speaking, reading in
class) and this is not social phobia. It
is only when the fear and anxiety
paralyses us and causes us severe
distress that we can label our
condition as social phobia or social
anxiety.
ReachOut Ireland (available on the
internet) provides valuable
information on situations that may
provoke feelings of anxiety. It is clear
from their information that the
anxiety may be triggered by what
many Tipp Tatler readers might
regard as normal situations. They are
not normal to the sufferers. This
anxiety, for example, can be
provoked by simply being introduced
to other people. They are terrified of
having a conversation, and tend to be
alone or have a small circle of friends.
If sufferers feel that they are the
centre of attention (for example at
their birthday party), they are likely to
experience the terror of social
anxiety. They experience severe
discomfort and anxiety if they are
being observed while carrying out a
task. This anxiety can even arise
when using the telephone, or when
talking to members of the opposite
sex. Many victims of this anxiety
dread meeting or talking with people
in authority. They freeze, and, for
example, are terrified if asked into the
office by their manager for what may
be a perfectly innocuous meeting.
The very idea of making a speech fills
them with terror, and any thought of
doing a reading at a religious
celebration such as Mass, is out of the
question.
If they are in any way criticised or
taunted the shame and embarrassment
suffered may be enormous. The
perspective of those plagued by this
anxiety is distorted, and their
thoughts irrational. Indeed, even the
very thought of attending a social
occasion or function can fill the
sufferer with anxiety and bring on
physical symptoms. They may worry
for days or even weeks before an
event, and after the occasion worry
about how they were judged. Those
who are inflicted with social anxiety
often feel they are subject to scrutiny
by others in the social situation, and
feel embarrassed. They feel self-
conscious, and have a strong sense of
failure. Such sufferers tend to be
withdrawn and avoid social
situations, because they feel that they
may suffer humiliation. Many feel
that they are not ‘interesting’ enough,
and avoid taking part in discussions.
They live in their own negative
world, and project their own negative
thoughts about feeling inferior about
themselves onto others. They may be
seen by others as reclusive and anti-
social, because they appear to be
unfriendly and withdrawn.
One of the hurtful results of social
anxiety is that it not only prevents the
sufferer from enjoying social
occasions, but it may also prevent
them from taking part in family
occasions, such as birthday parties,
christening parties, and any other
family celebrations involving a
number of people. This contributes to
sufferers becoming isolated from
family and friends. This may be
misinterpreted as unfriendliness or
snobbery. It is very difficult for those
hurting from social anxiety to explain
their feelings to family members, and
can result in frustration by both sides,
and, therefore, alienation from the
family. There is always the
temptation to indulge in alcohol or
drugs, because they relieve inhibition.
