improved functionality through the application of newer technologies including closed/ open loop
geo-exchange, heat recovery, radiant heating and cooling, active chilled beams, displacement
ventilation and solar energy transfer.
Derek has participated in a number of LEED® certified projects and has developed a good
understanding of sustainable engineering principles and the proper integration of alternate energy
sources.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Healthcare
Parksville Urgent Care – (OHC) Oceanside Health Centre - LEED® Silver: Parksville, BC
Lead designer of HVAC, plumbing, controls and fire suppression systems for 43,000 ft2 two storey
health services centre including medical gas systems, DDC controls and incorporation of
“Thermenex” thermal energy management piping and controls system.
Kelowna General Hospital – 5th Floor Addition; Kelowna, British Columbia
Provided HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression and medical gas design for 18,500 ft2 addition to
existing wing of hospital.
Edgemont Seniors Living; North Vancouver, BC
Lead designer for a new 35,000 ft2 seniors care facility. This project includes a single non-
combustible level of “memory care” and program space, topped with 2 levels of assisted living
spaces for the more independent individuals or couples. To provide a ventilation system in
compliance with ASHRAE 170 Ventilation Standard for Health Care Facilities; and to meet the
controllability expectations of the Client group, active beam technology was provided on the
“memory care” level. Individual active beams, each with independent control, are located in every
bedroom and common space of each suite. A 4-pipe hydronic distribution system was provided to
serve the beams with chilled and moderately tempered heating water. An air-source heat recovery
chiller heat pump is used to maintain the loop temperatures, with supplemental heating provided by
a small condensing boiler. To ensure energy is not wasted in the cooking processes, the NFPA 96
kitchen exhaust is provided with an industrial heat recovery unit, using the captured heat from
cooking to warm the make-up air required in the kitchen area. The combined MAU/KEF unit is
complete with automatic wash-down capability, to ensure the process is properly maintained. More
conventional electric heat and PTAC units were used in the assisted Living levels for space
temperature control; will packaged roof-top units provide heating and cooling for the amenity
areas. Water efficient fixtures have been identified throughout, further increasing the energy
reduction for this facility.

Education and Research
UFV Health Sciences- Open Loop Geo-Exchange - LEED® Gold; Chilliwack, British Columbia
Lead designer and project manager for LEED® Gold (pending) state-of-the-art facility at the Canada
Education Park. This project repurposes a series of existing buildings and provides a connecting
Atrium to link them into a single building, with some additional classroom/office space added.
Classrooms are tempered by active beam technology or heat pump technology. Multiple separate
hydronic loops, each functioning at a different thermal set-point, serve the facility. Heat is
generated by solar, geo-exchange heat pump or condensing boiler. Cooling is generated from the
open-loop geo-exchange system. A detailed direct digital control (DDC) system has been provided
to control and monitor this complex collection of HVAC systems throughout this facility. Throughout
the facility, water efficient plumbing fixtures have been utilized. As a result of these measures, this
facility is anticipated to operate utilizing 48% less energy and 40% less water than a similar facility
using conventional systems.
