Description
KYDEX®
sheet is an extremely
durable thermoplastic alloy extruded
to withstand levels of abuse from
moderate to extreme. It is available
in grades to optimize long-term
performance, appearance, and cost
effectiveness across demanding and
diverse end-use applications.
• Over 3500 custom colors
• Thicknesses from 0.56mm to
12.70mm (0 .022” to 0.500”)
• 8 textures
• Low minimum order quantities
KYDEX sheet is available in a range
of standard colors, granite patterns,
realistic wood grains and metallics.
Custom colors and a diversity of
designs are also available to
enhance virtually any commercial,
retail or institutional styling theme.
Specialized grades satisfy require-
ments specific to thermoforming,
membrane pressing, post forming,
brake forming, laminating and miter
folding—and fit a broad range of
applications ranging from medical
equipment housings and aircraft
seat parts, to retail store fixtures and
commercial furniture components.
Impact Resistance
No other thermoplastic sheet
stands up to impact, scratching,
and gouging like KYDEX sheet.
Depending on grade, it offers
outstanding notched Izod Impact
resistance. Due to its high degree
of toughness and resilience, KYDEX
sheet can also be stretched at
room temperature to twice its orig-
inal dimension without breaking.
Dimensional Stability
Low water absorption, extreme
formability, hot tear strength and
the ability to maintain wall thick-
ness give parts made with KYDEX
sheet high dimensional stability.
Weatherability
Certain monolithic grades of
KYDEX sheet are formulated for
weatherable applications, while
other grades employ a weather-
able cap sheet (either clear or
reverse-printed) that is permanent-
ly fused to the KYDEX substrate.
Flame Retardancy
Depending on grade, KYDEX sheet
carries fire ratings of UL 94 V-0 and
5V, UL 746C, FAR 25.853 (a) and
(d), BS 476 (Parts 6 and 7), MVSS
302, Class 1/A, and ASTM E-162.
Chemical Resistance
Sulfuric acid to brake fluid to car-
bon tetrachloride, high perform-
ance grades of KYDEX thermoplas-
tic alloys are more resistant to a
wider range of concentrated chem-
icals than any other thermoplastic.
Cleanability
Tough stains, scuffs, and graffiti can
be removed from KYDEX surfaces
using strong cleansers with no
staining, fading, or surface damage.
Design Flexibility
KYDEX sheet offers unprecedented
design and manufacturing flex-
ibility since numerous grades are
available to provide properties and
certified ratings required for
specialized applications.
An unlimited variety of flat and
three-dimensional effects can be
achieved since KYDEX sheet can
be thermoformed, membrane
pressed, laminated, miter folded,
post formed, brake formed and
machined. This allows each part of
multi-component products to be
produced using the most efficient
technique, yet match all other
components in appearance, further
expanding application possibilities.

KYDEX sheet meets Class 1/A
requirements for applications such
as wallcovering, perforated
acoustical partitions, and acousti-
cal ceiling panels. KYDEX sheet
properties make it ideal for use in
environmentally-controlled
commercial, institutional and
industrial buildings, resisting high
impact, scuffs, gouges, abrasion
and harsh cleansers more effec-
tively than paint, wallpaper or
vinyl wallcovering.
Kiosk Housings
Thermoforming, flat laminating,
membrane pressing and miter
folding with KYDEX sheet in solid
colors, granite patterns, realistic
woodgrains and custom graphic
patterns, can produce flat and
seamless three-dimensional kiosk
components that withstand
extreme abuse in high traffic envi-
ronments, and keep looking new
over a longer service life.
Illuminated Signage Housings
Thermoforming of illuminated
signage housings can eliminate
the high cost of sheet metal fabrica-
tion and painting. KYDEX sheet for
signage housings is offered in a bi-
layer two-color (duplex) version, and
as a single-color sheet. The exterior
side of duplex sheet is available in
any of several standard colors, while
the interior side is reflective bright
white, eliminating the labor costs
and flaking associated with painted
sheet metal housings.
Exhibits and Displays
Flat and three-dimensional compo-
nents surfaced with KYDEX sheet
withstand the abuse of high traffic
environments, resist harsh
cleansers and chemicals and over-
come the drawbacks of conven-
tional surfacing methods.
Available with Class 1/A and other
fire ratings.
Food Processing
KYDEX sheet can satisfy NSF
requirements while improving the
performance of equipment hous-
ings, covers and guards, as well as
ceiling and wall panels in plants
that process meat, poultry and
other food/beverage products.
Clean Room Walls and Ceilings
KYDEX sheet fire-rated ceiling pan-
els are approved for use in Class 10
rated clean rooms as tested accord-
ing to Federal Standard 209D. The
panels also meet Class 1/A fire
code requirements (ASTM E-84).
Miscellaneous Applications
The diversity of mechanical and
electrical properties, fire ratings,
textures, thicknesses, colors and
patterns encompassed by the 29
standard grades—and custom
grades—of KYDEX sheet, make it
suitable for an extraordinarily
diverse range of demanding
applications, from gun holsters
and channel buoys to hospital
beds and ice hockey targets.
Applications
Laminating
and Miter Folding
KYDEX®
sheet can be laminated
to wood, metal, gypsum, rigid
foam, and other substrates
using commercially available
adhesives, and by hot pressing
or cold pressing production
methods. The result is a protec-
tive surface that does not chip,
crack, break, or snap like high
pressure laminates, and is avail-
able in a range of thicknesses to
meet anticipated levels of
abuse. Depending on the grade,
color is integral, eliminating
dark edge lines that can be
unsightly, especially in heavier
gauges and against lighter colors.
Wood substrates laminated
with KYDEX sheet can also be
miter folded to produce seam-
less outside corners of cabi-
nets, drop-front shelving or
table legs—accomplished by
routing a V-groove (miter)
across the backside of the
wood without touching the
KYDEX sheet. Both mitered
wood edges are then sprayed
with adhesive and hinged on
the KYDEX sheet to close the
groove, forming a seamless
outside corner, improving
appearance, durability, cleanli-
ness, part alignment and struc-
tural integrity, while reducing
labor cost.
Typical applications include:
Commercial furniture, both
wood and steel
Store fixtures and case goods
Exhibits and displays
Partitions, doors, and panels
Virtually any laminated
product or surface in high-
traffic retail, institutional
and commercial interiors
KYDEX sheet is easy to saw,
die cut, shear, rout, drill, sand,
file, mill, and otherwise
machine using conventional
power tools. It can also be
post formed and brake formed
(with or without wire heating),
as well as heat welded to cre-
ate seamless, sanitary corners.
Joining can be accomplished
using screws, rivets, other
common fasteners or commer-
cially available adhesives—
without the cracking, chipping,
or snapping associated with
many thermoplastic and
thermoset sheet products.
The diversity of methods to
effectively form, fabricate,
machine, and join KYDEX sheet
opens limitless application pos-
sibilities, both functional and
decorative including:
Braces, brackets and supports
Perforated panels
Equipment shrouds and guards
Corner guards and crash rails
Kick plates and push plates
Freight container linings
Formed and/or laminated
products requiring simple
or complex secondary
operations
PRODUCTION METHODS
Thermoforming Membrane Pressing
For fast set-up and production
of plastic parts, especially large
parts in quantities from 500 to
several thousand, thermoform-
ing is commonly selected over
injection molding; tooling costs
can be 90 percent lower and
parts can be completed two-
to three-times more quickly.
Vacuum forming and pressure
forming both evacuate the
sealed air space between the
heated plastic and mold; pres-
sure forming adds air pressure
above the heated sheet to
achieve a higher quality finish
(sharp edges, undercuts, and
other close tolerance details).
KYDEX sheet is well
established as a premier
thermoforming sheet offering
numerous processing advan-
tages such as extreme
formability, hot tear strength,
and the ability to maintain
uniform wall thickness.
Typical applications include:
Equipment housings,
shrouds, enclosures
Vents and grilles
Interior components of air-
craft, mass transit vehicles,
trucks, and marine vessels
Commercial and institutional
furniture and seating
components
Hidden and exposed parts
such as chutes, braces and
equipment guards
Whereas thermoforming uses
air pressure to draw heated
plastic sheet into a mold, mem-
brane pressing uses an inflated
bladder or "membrane" to
physically press heated plastic
sheet onto a wood or compos-
ite substrate or "core," eliminat-
ing the need for molds.
Core surfaces can be flat or
machined to create three-
dimensional contours and
seamless edges with com-
pound curves since the flexible
membrane presses the plastic
into recesses and onto all
sides, encapsulating all but the
bottom core surface (which
can be laminated and heat-
welded at bottom edges for
total encapsulation).
The outstanding formability
of KYDEX sheet enables it to
conform fully to the core,
preserving sharp edges and
surface detail of three-dimen-
sional surfaces, while main-
taining uniform wall thickness
on high spots, low spots, and
sharp corners where other
sheet products may "thin out."
Typical applications include:
Raised panel cabinet doors
Table tops and workstation
surfaces
Corporate logo panels
Store fixture components
Commercial and institutional
furniture and seating
Kiosk panels

seamless three-dimensional kiosk
components that withstand
extreme abuse in high traffic envi-
ronments, and keep looking new
over a longer service life.
Illuminated Signage Housings
Thermoforming of illuminated
signage housings can eliminate
the high cost of sheet metal fabrica-
tion and painting. KYDEX sheet for
signage housings is offered in a bi-
layer two-color (duplex) version, and
as a single-color sheet. The exterior
side of duplex sheet is available in
any of several standard colors, while
the interior side is reflective bright
white, eliminating the labor costs
and flaking associated with painted
sheet metal housings.
Exhibits and Displays
Flat and three-dimensional compo-
nents surfaced with KYDEX sheet
withstand the abuse of high traffic
environments, resist harsh
cleansers and chemicals and over-
come the drawbacks of conven-
tional surfacing methods.
Available with Class 1/A and other
fire ratings.
Food Processing
KYDEX sheet can satisfy NSF
requirements while improving the
performance of equipment hous-
ings, covers and guards, as well as
ceiling and wall panels in plants
that process meat, poultry and
other food/beverage products.
Clean Room Walls and Ceilings
KYDEX sheet fire-rated ceiling pan-
els are approved for use in Class 10
rated clean rooms as tested accord-
ing to Federal Standard 209D. The
panels also meet Class 1/A fire
code requirements (ASTM E-84).
Miscellaneous Applications
The diversity of mechanical and
electrical properties, fire ratings,
textures, thicknesses, colors and
patterns encompassed by the 29
standard grades—and custom
grades—of KYDEX sheet, make it
suitable for an extraordinarily
diverse range of demanding
applications, from gun holsters
and channel buoys to hospital
beds and ice hockey targets.
Applications
Laminating
and Miter Folding
KYDEX®
sheet can be laminated
to wood, metal, gypsum, rigid
foam, and other substrates
using commercially available
adhesives, and by hot pressing
or cold pressing production
methods. The result is a protec-
tive surface that does not chip,
crack, break, or snap like high
pressure laminates, and is avail-
able in a range of thicknesses to
meet anticipated levels of
abuse. Depending on the grade,
color is integral, eliminating
dark edge lines that can be
unsightly, especially in heavier
gauges and against lighter colors.
Wood substrates laminated
with KYDEX sheet can also be
miter folded to produce seam-
less outside corners of cabi-
nets, drop-front shelving or
table legs—accomplished by
routing a V-groove (miter)
across the backside of the
wood without touching the
KYDEX sheet. Both mitered
wood edges are then sprayed
with adhesive and hinged on
the KYDEX sheet to close the
groove, forming a seamless
outside corner, improving
appearance, durability, cleanli-
ness, part alignment and struc-
tural integrity, while reducing
labor cost.
Typical applications include:
Commercial furniture, both
wood and steel
Store fixtures and case goods
Exhibits and displays
Partitions, doors, and panels
Virtually any laminated
product or surface in high-
traffic retail, institutional
and commercial interiors
KYDEX sheet is easy to saw,
die cut, shear, rout, drill, sand,
file, mill, and otherwise
machine using conventional
power tools. It can also be
post formed and brake formed
(with or without wire heating),
as well as heat welded to cre-
ate seamless, sanitary corners.
Joining can be accomplished
using screws, rivets, other
common fasteners or commer-
cially available adhesives—
without the cracking, chipping,
or snapping associated with
many thermoplastic and
thermoset sheet products.
The diversity of methods to
effectively form, fabricate,
machine, and join KYDEX sheet
opens limitless application pos-
sibilities, both functional and
decorative including:
Braces, brackets and supports
Perforated panels
Equipment shrouds and guards
Corner guards and crash rails
Kick plates and push plates
Freight container linings
Formed and/or laminated
products requiring simple
or complex secondary
operations
PRODUCTION METHODS
Thermoforming Membrane Pressing
For fast set-up and production
of plastic parts, especially large
parts in quantities from 500 to
several thousand, thermoform-
ing is commonly selected over
injection molding; tooling costs
can be 90 percent lower and
parts can be completed two-
to three-times more quickly.
Vacuum forming and pressure
forming both evacuate the
sealed air space between the
heated plastic and mold; pres-
sure forming adds air pressure
above the heated sheet to
achieve a higher quality finish
(sharp edges, undercuts, and
other close tolerance details).
KYDEX sheet is well
established as a premier
thermoforming sheet offering
numerous processing advan-
tages such as extreme
formability, hot tear strength,
and the ability to maintain
uniform wall thickness.
Typical applications include:
Equipment housings,
shrouds, enclosures
Vents and grilles
Interior components of air-
craft, mass transit vehicles,
trucks, and marine vessels
Commercial and institutional
furniture and seating
components
Hidden and exposed parts
such as chutes, braces and
equipment guards
Whereas thermoforming uses
air pressure to draw heated
plastic sheet into a mold, mem-
brane pressing uses an inflated
bladder or "membrane" to
physically press heated plastic
sheet onto a wood or compos-
ite substrate or "core," eliminat-
ing the need for molds.
Core surfaces can be flat or
machined to create three-
dimensional contours and
seamless edges with com-
pound curves since the flexible
membrane presses the plastic
into recesses and onto all
sides, encapsulating all but the
bottom core surface (which
can be laminated and heat-
welded at bottom edges for
total encapsulation).
The outstanding formability
of KYDEX sheet enables it to
conform fully to the core,
preserving sharp edges and
surface detail of three-dimen-
sional surfaces, while main-
taining uniform wall thickness
on high spots, low spots, and
sharp corners where other
sheet products may "thin out."
Typical applications include:
Raised panel cabinet doors
Table tops and workstation
surfaces
Corporate logo panels
Store fixture components
Commercial and institutional
furniture and seating
Kiosk panels

Technical Brief
Introduction KYDEX, LLC offers eight different textures ranging from high-gloss smooth to leatherette. Each texture presents its own
unique opportunities and challenges. Textures are embossed into the sheet during the extrusion process, so available
embossings may be limited based on KYDEX®
sheet grade, thickness, or width. Talk with your KYDEX®
thermoplastic sheet
representative for more details. The following is a summary of each texture.
Standard
KYDEX® Sheet
Textures
P-1 Haircell
• Best abrasion resistance
• Excellent for high abuse areas
• Can tend to have higher metamerism in highly chromatic colours
• Common texture available for many years
P-3 Velour Matte
• Excellent abrasion resistance
• Easy to control gloss when formed
• Most widely specified texture for aircraft components
• Remains very “matte” if formed properly and most looks like a painted
composite panel
P-8 Suede
• Good abrasion resistance but can show marring in light colours
• Excellent for textured female molding
• Great for flat laminations but can “gloss up” when vacuum formed
P-A Smooth
• Polished, high gloss appearance
• Prone to scratching
• Cannot be produced in low smoke formulations
P-C Level Haircell
• Leatherette appearance
• Good scratch resistance
• Common for high abuse areas
• Easy to control gloss level when thermoforming

Cleaning
KYDEX®
sheet has excellent chemical resistance and is easily cleaned with many common household cleaners such
as fantastik®
and Formula 409®
. The texture of KYDEX®
sheet plays a major role in the ease of cleaning. Shallow textured
sheet can easily be cleaned with a soft cloth, while a heavier texture may require use of a scrub brush to remove material
from texture valleys. For more information on cleaning of KYDEX®
sheet, please refer to Technical Brief 160-A - Cleaning
KYDEX®
Sheet, and Technical Brief 160-B - Cleaning and Maintaining KYDEX®
510, on our website at www.sekisui.spi.com.
Abrasion/Mar Resistance
KYDEX®
sheet is commonly used in high abuse applications, where it is important that the appearance of the sheet
is maintained throughout the life of the material. Many of the standard textures have been developed to offer high levels
of abrasion and mar resistance, providing not only superior durability but also lasting appearance.

Technical Brief
Texture
Characteristics
Tooling Marks
Texture rolls are produced through an engraving process that uses a machining tool to cut the texture into the face
of a cylinder roll. This tool has a specific width, which machines multiple sections across the width of the cylinder roll.
Points on the engraved cylinder where the tooling sections meet have a faint transition line. These lines leave a faint
impression in the sheet surface and are more noticeable in darker coloured sheet. Textures that have tooling marks include
P-1 Haircell, P-8 Suede, P-C Level Haircell, P-E Smooth Nap, and P-H Seville. P-3 Velour Matte, P-K Cashmere and P-A
Smooth are non-directional patterns that do not show tooling marks from the engraving process.
Gloss Level
The gloss level of KYDEX®
sheet is determined by the process rolls used to texture the sheet. Most texturing rolls produce
a low gloss appearance, with the exception of P-A Smooth, which has a higher gloss due to its polished surface. If necessary,
a higher gloss can be achieved by adjusting the process conditions of the texturing rolls in all textures except P-H Seville.
The level of gloss achievable will be limited according to the process capabilities of each texturing roll. In addition, in
achieving a higher gloss level, the texture of the sheet will be less defined and will have a washed out appearance.

Technical Brief
Introduction The KYDEX®
sheet name is a trademark of the SEKISUI SPI for our proprietary thermoplastic. Each grade is customized
to be suited for your particular application or performance need. KYDEX®
sheet is manufactured by SEKIUSI SPI under an
ISO 9001 certified quality system and has been satisfying customer needs for over 30 years.
KYDEX®
sheet is high quality and specialty in nature. They typically should be considered for applications requiring any
or all of the following benefits:
• Fire Retardancy
• High Impact Resistance
• Rigidity
• Superior Chemical Resistance
• Thermoformability
General
Information
KYDEX®
sheet is typically not a cost-effective substitute for cheaper thermoplastics such as polyethylene, styrene, or cheap
ABS, unless those materials are not performing satisfactorily. KYDEX®
sheet can be very competitive and effective
as an alternative to painted metal, fire-retardant ABS, Noryl®
, Lexan®
(polycarbonate), etc.
KYDEX®
sheet complies with Underwriter’s Laboratory, CSA, Building Code and/or FAA flammability requirements.
Because of the high impact resistance of KYDEX®
sheet, it has a longer service life and is very durable. The rigidity allows
for better feel and/or the ability to downgauge. Its superior chemical resistance allows it to be used in harsh, chemically
rich environments. It also makes KYDEX®
sheet extremely cleanable because harsh cleaners do not damage the texture
or the colour of the material. KYDEX®
sheet had excellent thermoforming properties that result in uniform wall thickness
and crisp detail.
There are a complete range of grades, colours, sheet sizes and textures available to meet the most demanding applications.
To choose the grade of KYDEX®
sheet that will work best for you, ask yourself a few questions:
1.	What are you making?
2.	What product are you using now?
3.	What specifications or regulatory compliance must you meet?
4.	What are your physical and visual performance requirements -- how is the product being used?
5.	What is your economic situation?
With this information, a SEKISUI SPI salesperson can help you choose the grade that is right for your application.

Technical Brief
Water
Absorption per
ASTM D 570
(ISO 62)
Plastic materials absorb water. The slightest amount of moisture content may result in changes in dimensions or in
properties such as electrical insulation resistance, dielectric losses, mechanical strength and appearance.
The determination of water absorption by a plastic specimen of defined dimensions is carried out by immersion in water
for a specified time and at a specified temperature. The measured results are expressed in either milligrams absorbed
water or as a percentage increase in weight. Comparison of the water absorption of various plastics is only possible if
the test specimens are of identical dimensions and in the same physical state.
Test specimens are pre-dried at 55°C (122°F) for 24 hours, cooled to room temperature and weighed, before immersion
in water for a specified time and at a specified temperature. Water absorption may be measured
• At 23°C (73°F): the specimens are placed in a container with distilled water at 23°C (73°F). After 24 hrs, the specimens
		 are dried and weighed
• At 100°C (212°F): the specimens are immersed for 30 minutes in boiling water, cooled for 15 minutes in water at
		 23°C (73°F) and reweighed
• Until saturation: the specimens are immersed in water at 23°C (73°F) until full saturation is reached
Water absorption may be expressed as:
• The mass of water absorbed
• The mass of water absorbed per unit of surface area
• A percentage of water absorbed with respect to the mass of the test specimen
Water
Absorption of
KYDEX®
sheet
As opposed to hygroscopic materials such as ABS, PC, and fiberglass that readily absorbs water, KYDEX®
sheet is very
hygrophobic (very low water absorption). This is important when these materials are used in Radome applications, which
protect enclosed antennas from the environment because the absorption of water can degrade the antenna’s performance
by reducing the transparency to radio frequencies and by reducing mechanical properties.

Technical Brief
Introduction KYDEX®
sheet resists bacteriological and fungal development which makes it ideal for use in hospitals, food industry, etc.
It does not readily provide a source of nutrients for bacteria and fungi. One source of these nutrients come from an
additive known as a plasticizer, which in most cases will support microbial growth. Since it does not contain plasticizers,
the main source of nutrients is removed and it performs very well when tested for bacterial and fungal growth.
KYDEX®
sheet was subjected to fungus resistance testing in accordance with ASTM G-21 and bacteria resistance testing
in accordance with ASTM G-22, Procedure B. Testing was performed by Truesdail Laboratories, Inc., located in Tustin,
California. The KYDEX®
sheet samples did not allow any fungus or bacteria growth.
The following test results show that KYDEX®
sheet performs exceptionally when exposed to bacteria and fungus, without
the addition of an antimicrobial additive.
I) Fungus
Resistance

Print Width KYDEX®
WG 3D Laminate is offered with a range of decorative options via lamination of printed films. SEKISUI SPI
purchases these printed films from various suppliers whose production capabilities differ. Among these production
variations is the print width.

While many film designs print at least 1346.2mm (53”) of coverage, SEKISUI SPI purchases some designs with less print
width (due to the manufacturer’s printing capabilities). Please contact your SEKISUI SPI sales or customer service
representative for the print width availability of a specific design.

Technical Data Sheet
KYDEX®
T
High impact fire-rated sheet
Introduction KYDEX®
T is a proprietary thermoplastic sheet that is cost competitive with fire retardant ABS/PVC (FR-ABS) formulations
but with significantly higher impact strength and extensibility.
General
Information
Since KYDEX®
T is less hygroscopic, unlike FR-ABS, it typically does not require pre-drying, offers superior impact, more uniform
forming with less wall thinning and offers significantly greater resistance to a broad range of corrosive chemicals and cleaning
solutions. It is available in a wide range of aesthetic choices and is Underwriter’s Laboratories, Inc®
recognized Std 94 V-0, 5V.
Suggested
Applications
• Aircraft Interiors • Mass Transit Vehicle Interior Components
• Equipment Housings • Medical Products
• Kiosk Housings
Features • Substitute for FR-ABS sheet with competitive pricing but superior cost/performance
• Higher breakage resistance measured by the Notched Izod test than competitive thermoplastics
• Available in thicknesses from 0.71mm (0.028”) and up, in eight textures, a variety of colors, custom blank sizes and low minimums
• Among the most rigid of thermoforming materials with a modulus of elasticity of 2,482 MPa (360,000 psi)
• Easy to form with excellent part definition and deep-draw characteristics
• Recognized by Underwriter’s Laboratories, Inc®
for Std 94 V-0, 5V in all thicknesses
• Form times similar to FR-ABS making it an easy transition from competitive products.

It is available in grades to optimize long-term performance, appearance, and cost effectiveness across demanding and diverse end-use applications. • Over 3500 custom colors • Thicknesses from 0.56mm to 12.70mm (0 .022” to 0.500”) • 8 textures • Low minimum order quantities KYDEX sheet is available in a range of standard colors, granite patterns, realistic wood grains and metallics. Custom colors and a diversity of designs are also available to enhance virtually any commercial, retail or institutional styling theme. Specialized grades satisfy require- ments specific to thermoforming, membrane pressing, post forming, brake forming, laminating and miter folding—and fit a broad range of applications ranging from medical equipment housings and aircraft seat parts, to retail store fixtures and commercial furniture components. Impact Resistance No other thermoplastic sheet stands up to impact, scratching, and gouging like KYDEX sheet. Depending on grade, it offers outstanding notched Izod Impact resistance. Due to its high degree of toughness and resilience, KYDEX sheet can also be stretched at room temperature to twice its orig- inal dimension without breaking. Dimensional Stability Low water absorption, extreme formability, hot tear strength and the ability to maintain wall thick- ness give parts made with KYDEX sheet high dimensional stability. Weatherability Certain monolithic grades of KYDEX sheet are formulated for weatherable applications, while other grades employ a weather- able cap sheet (either clear or reverse-printed) that is permanent- ly fused to the KYDEX substrate. Flame Retardancy Depending on grade, KYDEX sheet carries fire ratings of UL 94 V-0 and 5V, UL 746C, FAR 25.853 (a) and (d), BS 476 (Parts 6 and 7), MVSS 302, Class 1/A, and ASTM E-162. Chemical Resistance Sulfuric acid to brake fluid to car- bon tetrachloride, high perform- ance grades of KYDEX thermoplas- tic alloys are more resistant to a wider range of concentrated chem- icals than any other thermoplastic. Cleanability Tough stains, scuffs, and graffiti can be removed from KYDEX surfaces using strong cleansers with no staining, fading, or surface damage. Design Flexibility KYDEX sheet offers unprecedented design and manufacturing flex- ibility since numerous grades are available to provide properties and certified ratings required for specialized applications. An unlimited variety of flat and three-dimensional effects can be achieved since KYDEX sheet can be thermoformed, membrane pressed, laminated, miter folded, post formed, brake formed and machined. This allows each part of multi-component products to be produced using the most efficient technique, yet match all other components in appearance, further expanding application possibilities. Protect the long term performance and appearance of your products with KYDEX® thermoplastic sheet Patterns are representative only, and selection should not be based solely on the above chart. Mass Transit Vehicle, RV and Marine Interior Components KYDEX sheet is available in specialized grades that meet all performance criteria for flam- mability and smoke emission as tested under: ASTM E-662 and ASTM E-162 as described in both the "Recommended Fire Safety Practices for Rail Transit Materials Selection" issued by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration, and the Docket 90- A Federal Transit Administration's "Recommended Fire Safety Practices for Transit Bus and Van Materials Selection." Store Fixtures and Commercial Furniture Flat laminating, membrane press- ing and miter folding with KYDEX sheet in solid colors, granite pat- terns, realistic woodgrains and custom graphic patterns, can pro- duce flat and seamless three- dimensional store fixture and commercial furniture components that look better, last longer and are easier to manufacture than components surfaced with high- pressure laminates or wood veneers, or finished using paint or powder coatings. Medical Products From thermoformed equipment housings to membrane pressed or laminated medical building products to sanitary ceiling panels, specialized grades of KYDEX sheet offer the durability, cleanability, and versatility required to exceed the most demanding medical applications. Equipment Housings Outstanding physical properties, fire ratings, formability, and a wide selection of specialized grades make KYDEX sheet a pre- mier material for high perform- ance equipment housings. Building Products KYDEX sheet meets Class 1/A requirements for applications such as wallcovering, perforated acoustical partitions, and acousti- cal ceiling panels. KYDEX sheet properties make it ideal for use in environmentally-controlled commercial, institutional and industrial buildings, resisting high impact, scuffs, gouges, abrasion and harsh cleansers more effec- tively than paint, wallpaper or vinyl wallcovering. Kiosk Housings Thermoforming, flat laminating, membrane pressing and miter folding with KYDEX sheet in solid colors, granite patterns, realistic woodgrains and custom graphic patterns, can produce flat and seamless three-dimensional kiosk components that withstand extreme abuse in high traffic envi- ronments, and keep looking new over a longer service life. Illuminated Signage Housings Thermoforming of illuminated signage housings can eliminate the high cost of sheet metal fabrica- tion and painting. KYDEX sheet for signage housings is offered in a bi- layer two-color (duplex) version, and as a single-color sheet. The exterior side of duplex sheet is available in any of several standard colors, while the interior side is reflective bright white, eliminating the labor costs and flaking associated with painted sheet metal housings. Exhibits and Displays Flat and three-dimensional compo- nents surfaced with KYDEX sheet withstand the abuse of high traffic environments, resist harsh cleansers and chemicals and over- come the drawbacks of conven- tional surfacing methods. Available with Class 1/A and other fire ratings. Food Processing KYDEX sheet can satisfy NSF requirements while improving the performance of equipment hous- ings, covers and guards, as well as ceiling and wall panels in plants that process meat, poultry and other food/beverage products. Clean Room Walls and Ceilings KYDEX sheet fire-rated ceiling pan- els are approved for use in Class 10 rated clean rooms as tested accord- ing to Federal Standard 209D. The panels also meet Class 1/A fire code requirements (ASTM E-84). Miscellaneous Applications The diversity of mechanical and electrical properties, fire ratings, textures, thicknesses, colors and patterns encompassed by the 29 standard grades—and custom grades—of KYDEX sheet, make it suitable for an extraordinarily diverse range of demanding applications, from gun holsters and channel buoys to hospital beds and ice hockey targets. Applications Laminating and Miter Folding KYDEX® sheet can be laminated to wood, metal, gypsum, rigid foam, and other substrates using commercially available adhesives, and by hot pressing or cold pressing production methods. The result is a protec- tive surface that does not chip, crack, break, or snap like high pressure laminates, and is avail- able in a range of thicknesses to meet anticipated levels of abuse. Depending on the grade, color is integral, eliminating dark edge lines that can be unsightly, especially in heavier gauges and against lighter colors. Wood substrates laminated with KYDEX sheet can also be miter folded to produce seam- less outside corners of cabi- nets, drop-front shelving or table legs—accomplished by routing a V-groove (miter) across the backside of the wood without touching the KYDEX sheet. Both mitered wood edges are then sprayed with adhesive and hinged on the KYDEX sheet to close the groove, forming a seamless outside corner, improving appearance, durability, cleanli- ness, part alignment and struc- tural integrity, while reducing labor cost. Typical applications include: Commercial furniture, both wood and steel Store fixtures and case goods Exhibits and displays Partitions, doors, and panels Virtually any laminated product or surface in high- traffic retail, institutional and commercial interiors KYDEX sheet is easy to saw, die cut, shear, rout, drill, sand, file, mill, and otherwise machine using conventional power tools. It can also be post formed and brake formed (with or without wire heating), as well as heat welded to cre- ate seamless, sanitary corners. Joining can be accomplished using screws, rivets, other common fasteners or commer- cially available adhesives— without the cracking, chipping, or snapping associated with many thermoplastic and thermoset sheet products. The diversity of methods to effectively form, fabricate, machine, and join KYDEX sheet opens limitless application pos- sibilities, both functional and decorative including: Braces, brackets and supports Perforated panels Equipment shrouds and guards Corner guards and crash rails Kick plates and push plates Freight container linings Formed and/or laminated products requiring simple or complex secondary operations PRODUCTION METHODS Thermoforming Membrane Pressing For fast set-up and production of plastic parts, especially large parts in quantities from 500 to several thousand, thermoform- ing is commonly selected over injection molding; tooling costs can be 90 percent lower and parts can be completed two- to three-times more quickly. Vacuum forming and pressure forming both evacuate the sealed air space between the heated plastic and mold; pres- sure forming adds air pressure above the heated sheet to achieve a higher quality finish (sharp edges, undercuts, and other close tolerance details). KYDEX sheet is well established as a premier thermoforming sheet offering numerous processing advan- tages such as extreme formability, hot tear strength, and the ability to maintain uniform wall thickness. Typical applications include: Equipment housings, shrouds, enclosures Vents and grilles Interior components of air- craft, mass transit vehicles, trucks, and marine vessels Commercial and institutional furniture and seating components Hidden and exposed parts such as chutes, braces and equipment guards Whereas thermoforming uses air pressure to draw heated plastic sheet into a mold, mem- brane pressing uses an inflated bladder or "membrane" to physically press heated plastic sheet onto a wood or compos- ite substrate or "core," eliminat- ing the need for molds. Core surfaces can be flat or machined to create three- dimensional contours and seamless edges with com- pound curves since the flexible membrane presses the plastic into recesses and onto all sides, encapsulating all but the bottom core surface (which can be laminated and heat- welded at bottom edges for total encapsulation). The outstanding formability of KYDEX sheet enables it to conform fully to the core, preserving sharp edges and surface detail of three-dimen- sional surfaces, while main- taining uniform wall thickness on high spots, low spots, and sharp corners where other sheet products may "thin out." Typical applications include: Raised panel cabinet doors Table tops and workstation surfaces Corporate logo panels Store fixture components Commercial and institutional furniture and seating Kiosk panels 36 Standard Colors Thicknesses RED 12000 ROOSTER RED 12037 CABERNET 12038 TERRACOTTA 12148 BEIGE 72005 CHOCOLATE 72010 POLAR WHITE 62000 SUNLFLOWER 22158 APRICOT 22182 MYSTIC GREEN 32060 COCOA 72047 ROUGE 72175 STEEL GRAY 52068 PINSTRIPE 52070 LOGO GREEN 32169 KHAKIGRUN 32170 BUOYANT BLUE 42112 ORANGE 22031 SEA GREEN 32077 SNOWFLAKE 62029 CANYON BLUE 42107 CADET BLUE 42000 WILD ORCHID 42369 CALCUTTA BLACK 52000 BLACK 52114 VANILLE SC 62340 IVORY 62015 PEWTER GRAY 52001 DARK GRAY 52002 KYDEX® thermoplastic sheet is available in 36 standard colors (shown) and over 3500 custom-blended colors, as well as custom- matched colors. The texture of KYDEX® sheet plays a major role in the ease of cleaning. Shallow textured sheet can easily be cleaned with a soft cloth, while a heavier texture may require use of a scrub brush to remove material from texture valleys. For more information on cleaning of KYDEX® sheet, please refer to Technical Brief 160-A - Cleaning KYDEX® Sheet, and Technical Brief 160-B - Cleaning and Maintaining KYDEX® 510, on our website at www.sekisui.spi.com. Abrasion/Mar Resistance KYDEX® sheet is commonly used in high abuse applications, where it is important that the appearance of the sheet is maintained throughout the life of the material. Many of the standard textures have been developed to offer high levels of abrasion and mar resistance, providing not only superior durability but also lasting appearance. This tool has a specific width, which machines multiple sections across the width of the cylinder roll. Points on the engraved cylinder where the tooling sections meet have a faint transition line. These lines leave a faint impression in the sheet surface and are more noticeable in darker coloured sheet. Textures that have tooling marks include P-1 Haircell, P-8 Suede, P-C Level Haircell, P-E Smooth Nap, and P-H Seville. P-3 Velour Matte, P-K Cashmere and P-A Smooth are non-directional patterns that do not show tooling marks from the engraving process. Gloss Level The gloss level of KYDEX® sheet is determined by the process rolls used to texture the sheet. Most texturing rolls produce a low gloss appearance, with the exception of P-A Smooth, which has a higher gloss due to its polished surface. If necessary, a higher gloss can be achieved by adjusting the process conditions of the texturing rolls in all textures except P-H Seville. The level of gloss achievable will be limited according to the process capabilities of each texturing roll. In addition, in achieving a higher gloss level, the texture of the sheet will be less defined and will have a washed out appearance. Each grade is customized to be suited for your particular application or performance need. KYDEX® sheet is manufactured by SEKIUSI SPI under an ISO 9001 certified quality system and has been satisfying customer needs for over 30 years. KYDEX® sheet is high quality and specialty in nature. They typically should be considered for applications requiring any or all of the following benefits: • Fire Retardancy • High Impact Resistance • Rigidity • Superior Chemical Resistance • Thermoformability General Information KYDEX® sheet is typically not a cost-effective substitute for cheaper thermoplastics such as polyethylene, styrene, or cheap ABS, unless those materials are not performing satisfactorily. KYDEX® sheet can be very competitive and effective as an alternative to painted metal, fire-retardant ABS, Noryl® , Lexan® (polycarbonate), etc. KYDEX® sheet complies with Underwriter’s Laboratory, CSA, Building Code and/or FAA flammability requirements. Because of the high impact resistance of KYDEX® sheet, it has a longer service life and is very durable. The rigidity allows for better feel and/or the ability to downgauge. Its superior chemical resistance allows it to be used in harsh, chemically rich environments. It also makes KYDEX® sheet extremely cleanable because harsh cleaners do not damage the texture or the colour of the material. KYDEX® sheet had excellent thermoforming properties that result in uniform wall thickness and crisp detail. There are a complete range of grades, colours, sheet sizes and textures available to meet the most demanding applications. To choose the grade of KYDEX® sheet that will work best for you, ask yourself a few questions: 1. For more information contact SEKISUI SPI Technical Service at 800.682.8758 or by email at info@sekisui-spi.com. The determination of water absorption by a plastic specimen of defined dimensions is carried out by immersion in water for a specified time and at a specified temperature. The measured results are expressed in either milligrams absorbed water or as a percentage increase in weight. Comparison of the water absorption of various plastics is only possible if the test specimens are of identical dimensions and in the same physical state. Test specimens are pre-dried at 55°C (122°F) for 24 hours, cooled to room temperature and weighed, before immersion in water for a specified time and at a specified temperature. Water absorption may be measured • At 23°C (73°F): the specimens are placed in a container with distilled water at 23°C (73°F). After 24 hrs, the specimens are dried and weighed • At 100°C (212°F): the specimens are immersed for 30 minutes in boiling water, cooled for 15 minutes in water at 23°C (73°F) and reweighed • Until saturation: the specimens are immersed in water at 23°C (73°F) until full saturation is reached Water absorption may be expressed as: • The mass of water absorbed • The mass of water absorbed per unit of surface area • A percentage of water absorbed with respect to the mass of the test specimen Water Absorption of KYDEX® sheet As opposed to hygroscopic materials such as ABS, PC, and fiberglass that readily absorbs water, KYDEX® sheet is very hygrophobic (very low water absorption). This is important when these materials are used in Radome applications, which protect enclosed antennas from the environment because the absorption of water can degrade the antenna’s performance by reducing the transparency to radio frequencies and by reducing mechanical properties. One source of these nutrients come from an additive known as a plasticizer, which in most cases will support microbial growth. Since it does not contain plasticizers, the main source of nutrients is removed and it performs very well when tested for bacterial and fungal growth. KYDEX® sheet was subjected to fungus resistance testing in accordance with ASTM G-21 and bacteria resistance testing in accordance with ASTM G-22, Procedure B. Testing was performed by Truesdail Laboratories, Inc., located in Tustin, California. The KYDEX® sheet samples did not allow any fungus or bacteria growth. The following test results show that KYDEX® sheet performs exceptionally when exposed to bacteria and fungus, without the addition of an antimicrobial additive. I) Fungus Resistance Testing, ASTM G-21 Eighteen day cultures of the following pure culture fungi were harvested, washed and their spore counts adjusted to 1,000.000 (±200,000 per ml). The spore suspensions were combined and sprayed on the samples and controls which were placed on mineral salts agar and placed in the test chamber. The samples, along with controls were incubated for 28 days and examined weekly. *Rating: 0=no growth. 1=traces, 2=light, 3=moderate, 4=heavy growth Conclusion of Fungus Resistance Testing: The KYDEX® sheet samples did not allow any fungus growth (rating of 0).
