6. DENTAL HOME:
• All children should have a place where they can
receive appropriate health care provided by
physicians, dentists, and other allied health

community health center, or at the neighborhood

8. •SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE DENTAL HOME
• Schedule early dental visits at approximately 12 to 18 months of
age
• Assess the risk of the infant and toddler for future dental disease
• Evaluate the fluoride status of the infant and make appropriate
recommendations
• Demonstrate to caretakers the appropriate method for cleaning
teeth
• Discuss the advantages/disadvantages of nonnutritive sucking
• Be prepared to treat the infant/toddler if early childhood caries is
diagnosed or to make the appropriate referral
• Be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to deal with any acute
dental problems
• Recognize the need for specialty consultation and referrals
9. GUIDELINES TO PARENTS:
• Bring their child for first dental visit early, at least by the
time the baby is 6 months of age
• Breast feed the baby but do not indulge at will
• Avoid frequent use of the bottle with sugared milk or
drinks
• Do not put the child to bed with the bottle or at the breast
• Dilute the milk gradually in the bottle and end with plain
water
• Feeding should be supervised at all times
• Start the child on semi-solid foods by 5-6 months and
reduce bottle feeding
10. • Do not use pacifiers or dummies dipped in honey
• Avoid extended use of sugared medicines such as
syrups
• Clean the gums and later teeth with a cloth or soft
brush after every meal or before sleep
• Contact the dentist immediately if there is any accident
or trauma to the baby's teeth
• Parents should know about the benefits of fluorides
• Half- yearly visit to the dentist should be routine.
