2. • Children with special needs are the ones who need special
consideration while receiving dental treatment due to physical,
developmental, medical or neurocognitive conditions. This can
include cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, cleft lip or palate,
hearing & vision impairments, learning disabilities that can make
usual dental procedures more difficult.
• For children with developmental disabilities, day to day dental care
is a challenge. Unquestionably, regardless of certain disabilities or
special health care needs we must ensure maximal dental care to all
with appropriate measures.
3. Why children with special needs have greater need
for dental treatment?
Children with special needs have greater need for dental treatment
because of the following reasons that include:
4. • Children with genetic disorder may have delayed tooth eruption,
malformed or congenitally missing teeth. At times, poorly aligned
teeth increase the chances of tooth decay or gum disease because it’s
very difficult to maintain their oral hygiene.
• Children with cerebral palsy are at higher risk of encountering
dental trauma.
• Prescribed medications may have deleterious effect on one’s dental
health likeꟷ gingival overgrowth, dry mouth etc.
It’s of vital importance to start a preventive & interceptive dental
treatment as early as possible & dental care must be followed
diligently which can ensure every child have a privilege of healthy
smile.
5. Numerous ways to make sure your child has the
best experience at his dental visit
• Parents are always more bundle of nerves than their little ones.
Somewhere down the corner they are worried how well their little
ones are going to cope with the dentist & dental treatment.
• For parents with special needs childꟷ calm your nerves, we have
many ways to ensure that your child has the best experience at
his/her dental visit.
6. • It’s always seen that children are quite active during the day time.
So, a dental visit must be scheduled in the morning time when the
children aren’t tired & ready to cope with the dental treatment.
• Visiting a dentist make your child’s blood run cold?
Certainly, it’s highly important for kids to become familiar with
their dentist & surroundings. Unless they are familiar with the dental
staff they wouldn’t cope well. Kids take time to trust unknown, also
in order to get rid of fear, we advice the parents to bring their child
to the dental office as many times it takes them to explore the clinic
& become familiarised with the dental staff.
7. • Communication plays a crucial role in treating children with special
health care needs. However, appropriate communication is critical
while treating such patients. We make sure to communicate with
them & in case they cannot communicate verbally we allow a family
member to be present to provide information that the patient can’t.
• Kid’s dental anxiety or lack of understanding the importance of
dental care can jeopardize the safe delivery of dental treatment. For
such patients behaviour guidance techniques are not adequate, we
include protective stabilization, sedation or general anesthesia in our
practice.
8. • At times, children are scared of getting their dental treatment in
dental chair. If they are afraid to sit in the dental chair, the check up
can be carried out wherever they feel comfortable in presence of
their parents.
We ensure to make your child comfortable & deliver the appropriate
treatment to improve their dental care.
9. When to see a dentist?
• It’s always recommended to see your dentist as soon as your child’s
first tooth erupts. In case of children with special needs we
recommend to visit your dentist before your child turns one.
10. • At Dr. Sachdeva’s Dental Institute we treat children with special
needs. During the initial visits, we evaluate your child’s dental
development & guide you the most relevant home care routine for
your child. By closely evaluating your child we decide the
appropriate dental treatment plan.
