"Automation is definitely going to impact the lower end of the market. But there are ways to leverage it in terms of a large transformational contract, where we automate the rulebased parts of the work and focus on the higher-skill parts of the contract," Sanjay Jain, chief strategy officer at US-listed BPO firm WNS, told ET. For example, in finance and accounting processes, WNS could simply create a portal where suppliers could check the status of their invoices rather than having to call a help-desk manned by people. "'Does this improve efficiency?' Yes. 'Could you call it automation?' Yes. 'Is it is robot?' No. Robot is a buzzword. Automation is just about efficiency by reducing human intervention," WNS' Jain said. The BPO firm has a technology with thousands of employees working to create products and platforms to reach its goal. The company already has over 30 per cent of its revenue coming from such non-linear offerings. Areas such as infrastructure outsourcing and testing are also seeing increasing use of automation tools. "Companies like IPSoft or Prism in the US are trying to automate the infrastructure outsourcing. I think they've made a great beginning, but it'll be interesting to see how much of it really gets automated. That is not very substantial in revenue terms today," said Sangeeta Gupta, vice-president at software industry body Nasscom.
