Editor's Notes
Launched for Earth Day 2011
Lowe's Million Trees initiative was to give away one million trees and then track the growth of those trees.
The registration webpage allowed users to quickly enter the type of tree and their location as well as use the Green Calculator to see the impact that their single tree could have on CO2, water retention, shade-kilowatts and more. Annual check-in on registrants would provide coupons and offers for tree supplies and services. Annual updates to the site would display the growing impact that the one million trees had made and provide inspiration for other "small drop" type projects.
In this is the site copy that we still have running, to reduce the size of the database records we cut the records down so that now it shows the concept of how it was used, but not the specific numbers. On that day, Lowe's did give out just over 1 million trees and as part of the program there were over 100,000 registered, so it was around 10% of the trees that got registered in the site.
As the Director of Public Web for the Defense Media Activity, Les Benito runs the Public Web program for the Department of Defense. This program includes 680 of DoD's public websites that are used as primary communication tools by the Secretary of Defense, military service secretaries, and commanders around the world. Those sites include the official websites for the Department of Defense (www.defense.gov) the U.S. Air Force (www.af.mil), the U.S. Navy (www.navy.mil), the U.S. Marine Corps (www.marines.mil), and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (www.jcs.mil) With over 4.5 million visitors per week, the DoD sites under his oversight are some of the most popular government sites on the internet. Les is also the DoD representative on the Federal Web Manager's Council an interagency group of senior federal government Web managers who collaborate to share common challenges, ideas, and best practices, and improve the online delivery of U.S. Government information and services.
