Opening Remarks
Sport Management Ceremony
On April 17th
2015 students, faculty, and alumni alike
gathered together in the Function Room of Corey Union
to celebrate the accomplishments of the department in
the annual Sport Management Ceremony. Speaches were
given, awards were received, and most importantly the
ceremony took a new step going forward. Thanks to the
the help of student event coordinator Brendan McInerney
and professors that included Tracy Trachsler, Lawrence
Brady, and Tara Mahoney the Ceremony shifted from a
single key note speaker to a 5 panel group that contained
multiple distinguished alumni to come from SUNY
Cortland. The panel included (as seen from left to right)
Katie Keenan, Tyrel Kirkham, Kotaro Okada, Gerry
Tschinkel, and Kaylin VanDusen.
The panel spent over an hour answering questions put
forward by both students and faculty. They shared life
experiences, the do’s and don’ts of the industry, and most importantly showed the students that with
some hard work they could one day be high up in the Sport Management community.
Each speaker came from a respective sect of Sport Management. From merchandising of a professional
team to sponsorship creation at a ski resort, event management for the NFL, a writer for the MLB, and
analytics at ESPN the diverse panel was exactly what the Sport Management Ceremony needed moving
forward. After the panel discussion, students had an opportunity to personally connect with each
member, bridging the cap between alumni and student at SUNY Cortland.

2. In the third consecutive year the club has sponsored the event, it proved to be
the best tournament to date. 12 teams came out to Lusk Field House on Sunday,
March 8, which saw an increase in participation by 100 percent. The European
Handball Tournament is a charity event where all proceeds go to Breat Cancer
Awareness. Students battled with the hopes of coming home with the elusive
championship pinnie. There were also raffle prizes to go along with the pizza and
drinks, which was provided by Marks Pizzeria. Ultimately Rack Attack and The
Bean Team advanced to the championship and being one step closer to earning
the championship pinnie. The game ended up being an instant classic as it headed
into overtime with Rack Attack ending up the winners. All in all, just over $500
dollars were raised for a great cause.
European Handball Tournament
April 17th
2015 14 teams took to the 281 Fields to play in the 6th
annual Lose the
Shoes Tournament. For the first time in 3 years, the weather was finally in the favor
of the Club for the event was allowed to be held outside. Students and faculty
alike competed barefoot for three hours on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. With
Men’s Elite, Women’s Elite, and Co-rec teams all in action there never was a dull
moment all day.
All proceeds for the event went to a group called GrassRoot Soccer. Started by
Ethan Zohan back in 2003, the groups goal is to kick HIV/AIDs out of Africa by
spreading awareness through the game of soccer. Lose the Shoes was brought to
Cortland 6 years ago and the club has carried on the tradition ever since.
Thanks to donated raffle prizes by NYC FC, the YES Network, and local business
the event was an even greater success. Students lined up to win tickets to the
newest MLS team and almost every participant walked out with a prize of some
sort.
The club was able to raise just over $2,000 dollars for Grassroot Soccer in our most
successful event every year.
