Family : Moraceae
 Jack tree is a large tree producing a number of fruits.
The flesh of the fruit is starchy, fibrous and a source
of dietary fiber.
 It is the native of southern and south eastern Asia.
 The two important varieties of Kerala are varikka
and koozha.
 Varikka is slightly hard inner flesh when ripe, while
the koozha fruit is very soft.
 After removing and the skin of unripe fruit, the
whole fruit can be chopped in to edible portions
and cooked in different ways to make delicious
dishes.
 The ripe fruit is sweet and is used to make a variety
of dishes like custards, cakes etc.
 Ripe fruits after removing the seeds are fried and
used as chips.
 The seeds are also edible. They are used to
make delicious dishes.
 The heart wood of jack tree is very durable
and is used for making furniture and
constructing buildings.

Family: Moraceae
 The breadfruit is one of the most important food
fruits of world. It is the native of Malaysia.
 The tree is very beautiful and it grows upto a height
of 20m or more.
 Leaves are deeply incised.
 The prickly bread frits are brownish yellow when
ripe, with a fibrous yellow pulp.
 The fruits are borne in clusters. They are eaten fresh
or cooked.
 Most usually they are baked, boiled, roasted or fried
or ground up and used for bread.
 The carbohydrate content is about 20%.
Binomial :Phoenix dactylifera
Family :Arecaceae
 Phoenix or date palm is one of the oldest crop, it
is the native of India and Arabia.
 Date palm is slender, tall and unbranched tree,
growing up to a height of 30m.It usually produces
offshoots from the base.
 Male plants produce 30-50 inflorescence, whereas
female plants will produce only 8-12.
 Fruit is a round berry, which is hard and green at
first. It turns yellow or red when ripe.
 Fruit flesh is thick and sweet.
 Date palm can grow in almost all kinds of soil.
 Sandy soil and good irrigation are desirable. Older
trees do not require much water.
 Their lifespan may extend upto 200 years.
 Dates are the staple food of Arabs.
 They are also used in making jams, cakes,
beverages, confectionaries etc.
 They are useful in relieving respiratory problems.
Also, they are u good laxatives.
 Water soaked seeds are used as a feed for horses,
camels, goats and poultry.
 The leaves of date palms are used for making
masks, fans, basket and ropes.
 The sweet date palm sap is used to make jaggery
and sugar.
Family : Arecaceae
 Corypha is a genus of fan palms. There are
only less than ten species are cultivated now
a days.
 Corypha has a thick trunk and massive fan
shaped leaves. A fully mature palm has a
height of 25m.
 After the flowers have set into fruits, the tree
dies.
 Most species of corypha grow very slow.
 They grow well in tropical regions.
 They require full sun and well drained soil to
survive.
 Their leaves are used for thatching.
 Stems are used for paper making and rope making.
