A challenge for the broiler industry
• Demand for poultry meat is increasing
» population increase
» improved economic prosperity
• Protein is one of the most expensive raw materials in an
animal’s diet and is essential for growth
• Regional food security concerns
• Consumer and regulatory pressure to have a more
environmentally & animal friendly production is increasing
• Utilizing dietary protein sources more efficiently can help
produce more meat whilst meeting the environmental
challenges

changes – soya as an example
1. All soya used in broiler diets comes from
mature agricultural land (sustainable)
2. All soya used in broiler diets comes from
newly established agricultural land (worst
case)
3. The soya used in broiler diets comes from a
mixture of mature and newly established
agricultural land (“best estimate”, PAS 2050)
4. All crops used in broiler diets have indirect
land use change effects (top-down)

Why aren’t home grown protein sources
more effective?
• There are GWP reductions due to reduced
transport emissions and emissions from land
use changes.
• These reductions are relatively small
• Importantly the removal of soya requires the
addition of pure amino acids and vegetable
oil; the GWP of these ingredients per unit of
ingredient is relatively high
Interim Conclusions
1. Home-grown protein crops maybe able to
replace soya beans in non ruminant diets
2. Whether there are reductions in greenhouse
gas emissions as a result of this substitution
will depend on the LUC accounting method
3. Even when direct land use changes related
to soya production are included, the
reduction of GWP does not exceed 15%

Interim Conclusions
• Proteases reduce the environmental impact
of poultry systems, especially their
acidification potential
• These effects may manifest more strongly
on diets based on home grown protein
sources (has this been addressed
adequately?)
• Additives may have a role to play on the
environmental impact of livestock systems.

Tools to assess the environmental impact of
livestock systems are now available
The environmental impact consequences of using
EU-grown protein sources are not dramatic
The consequences of using co-products or additive
solutions may not be spectacular, but are in the
right direction
There are trade-offs between least cost formulation
and reduced environmental impact; the question is
would anyone be willing to pay for the latter?

Page A challenge for the broiler industry • Demand for poultry meat is increasing » population increase » improved economic prosperity • Protein is one of the most expensive raw materials in an animal’s diet and is essential for growth • Regional food security concerns • Consumer and regulatory pressure to have a more environmentally & animal friendly production is increasing • Utilizing dietary protein sources more efficiently can help produce more meat whilst meeting the environmental challenges

Why aren’t home grown protein sources more effective? • There are GWP reductions due to reduced transport emissions and emissions from land use changes. • These reductions are relatively small • Importantly the removal of soya requires the addition of pure amino acids and vegetable oil; the GWP of these ingredients per unit of ingredient is relatively high
  • 15. Interim Conclusions 1. Home-grown protein crops maybe able to replace soya beans in non ruminant diets 2. Whether there are reductions in greenhouse gas emissions as a result of this substitution will depend on the LUC accounting method 3. Even when direct land use changes related to soya production are included, the reduction of GWP does not exceed 15%

Interim Conclusions • Proteases reduce the environmental impact of poultry systems, especially their acidification potential • These effects may manifest more strongly on diets based on home grown protein sources (has this been addressed adequately?) • Additives may have a role to play on the environmental impact of livestock systems.

Some food for thought – in place of Conclusions Tools to assess the environmental impact of livestock systems are now available The environmental impact consequences of using EU-grown protein sources are not dramatic The consequences of using co-products or additive solutions may not be spectacular, but are in the right direction There are trade-offs between least cost formulation and reduced environmental impact; the question is would anyone be willing to pay for the latter?
