Abstract
In the course you will include a descriptive abstract with each
lab. Abstracts have a very specific purpose and are not to be
confused with an executive summary or introduction to the lab.
See how to write a descriptive abstract
athttp://writing.colostate.edu/guides/documents/abstract/
The Abstract summarizes four essential aspects of the report:
· The purpose of the experiment (sometimes expressed as the
purpose of the report)
· Key findings
· Most significant point of discussion of the lab relating to
networking
· New insights and conclusions.
Introduction
The Introduction/Setup of the labmust contain the following:
· Purpose of the lab
· Important background and theory
· References to how previous labs help in working through this
lab
· Identify all the hardware and software required for the lab,
don't forget network components
Objectives for this Lab
1) Create a client/server network with at least a single client
and a single server (The MS Server 2012):
2) Set up users and groups in Active Directory
3) Setup basic rights to folders on server and login to the server
as a non-administrative user and test your file/folder
permissions
4) Learn how employ Group Policy objects with Active
Directory
Activities in the Lab
Lab Overview
Step 1: Setup the following folders on your server using
Windows Explorer. Name them as follows:
· Secret files
· Private files
· Public files
Create several text or word docs and put a couple of files in
each folder. It doesn’t matter what is in the files since you will
only be concerned with setting user access to them.
Step 2: Go to the server’s Active Directory Users and Groups
utility to create/manage users and groups
· Create three groups: Administrators, IT staff & Data Entry
Clerks (See section 14-3 in chapter 14 of the book) by right
clicking on the Groups folder and selecting ‘new’
· Create several users: (ie. Doc, Sleepy, Grumpy, Happy,
Sneezy, Bashful, etc.) by right clicking on User folder and
selecting ‘new’
· Create passwords for each. (I recommend using the same
password for all users)
· Assign a few users to each of the groups. You may have a user
in more than one group.
· From Windows Explorer, navigate to the folders you
previously set up. Right click on the folder and choose
PROPERTY to setup the rights for each group to the their
respective folders (See pgs 533-538 in the book)
· Administrators get full rights to all folders
· IT staff gets no rights to the Secret Folder, Full Control rights
to the Private Files & Public Files folders
· The Data Entry Clerks Get full rights to the Public File folder,
Read-only rights to the Private File folder and no rights to the
Secret folder.
Step 3: Share your public folder so that you access the server
from your other desktop. If you bought the MS Server book you
can go to chapter 15 and read about sharing files and folders. If
you didn’t buy the book you will have to use the HELP files in
the File and Server Resource Manger and the Share and Storage
Manger consoles. Log in from your external workstation as
different users and show your attempts to access all three
folders
Step 4: Give a substantial report on how the following MS
Server 2012 services are made available to users. How is
security implemented in the File server? (This should be the
main bulk of the lab)
· Creating folders on the server hard drive
· The uses of users and groups
· How access privileges are assigned
· How external users can access files on the server
Bonus Activity: Set up a printer on your server. Create a shared
printer and print a document from your workstation to the
server printer. Explain the process and the benefits of sharing a
network printer. Show a screen capture of the print queue with
your print job.
Step 5: In the last lab you used Active Directory to create some
users and groups. Now that you are working within a domain
there is another tool that lets you create and manage Group
Policy Objects (GPO). To explore this tool navigate to the
GROUP POLICY MANAGEMENT (GPM) tool within the
Administrative Tools. Acquaint yourself with the GPM console
and read the following 3 papers at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753298.aspx .
· Getting started with GPMC
· Edit, Filter, and Comment Policy settings
· Control the Scope of Group Policy Objects
Show me that you have created and configured an appropriate
object for your network and write me a summary report on the
purpose and possible uses of GPO’s.
Conclusion
I will be looking for your opinions and insights on how the MS
Server 2012 can be used in an organization. What did you think
was slick and what was clumsy? Any Aha’s along the way?
What did you learn in the lab? How do you think you could use
what you learned in the lab?

  • 2. Abstract In the course you will include a descriptive abstract with each lab. Abstracts have a very specific purpose and are not to be confused with an executive summary or introduction to the lab. See how to write a descriptive abstract athttp://writing.colostate.edu/guides/documents/abstract/ The Abstract summarizes four essential aspects of the report: · The purpose of the experiment (sometimes expressed as the purpose of the report) · Key findings · Most significant point of discussion of the lab relating to networking · New insights and conclusions. Introduction The Introduction/Setup of the labmust contain the following: · Purpose of the lab · Important background and theory · References to how previous labs help in working through this lab · Identify all the hardware and software required for the lab, don't forget network components Objectives for this Lab 1) Create a client/server network with at least a single client and a single server (The MS Server 2012): 2) Set up users and groups in Active Directory 3) Setup basic rights to folders on server and login to the server as a non-administrative user and test your file/folder permissions
  • 3. 4) Learn how employ Group Policy objects with Active Directory Activities in the Lab Lab Overview Step 1: Setup the following folders on your server using Windows Explorer. Name them as follows: · Secret files · Private files · Public files Create several text or word docs and put a couple of files in each folder. It doesn’t matter what is in the files since you will only be concerned with setting user access to them. Step 2: Go to the server’s Active Directory Users and Groups utility to create/manage users and groups · Create three groups: Administrators, IT staff & Data Entry Clerks (See section 14-3 in chapter 14 of the book) by right clicking on the Groups folder and selecting ‘new’ · Create several users: (ie. Doc, Sleepy, Grumpy, Happy, Sneezy, Bashful, etc.) by right clicking on User folder and selecting ‘new’ · Create passwords for each. (I recommend using the same password for all users) · Assign a few users to each of the groups. You may have a user in more than one group. · From Windows Explorer, navigate to the folders you previously set up. Right click on the folder and choose PROPERTY to setup the rights for each group to the their respective folders (See pgs 533-538 in the book) · Administrators get full rights to all folders · IT staff gets no rights to the Secret Folder, Full Control rights to the Private Files & Public Files folders · The Data Entry Clerks Get full rights to the Public File folder,
  • 4. Read-only rights to the Private File folder and no rights to the Secret folder. Step 3: Share your public folder so that you access the server from your other desktop. If you bought the MS Server book you can go to chapter 15 and read about sharing files and folders. If you didn’t buy the book you will have to use the HELP files in the File and Server Resource Manger and the Share and Storage Manger consoles. Log in from your external workstation as different users and show your attempts to access all three folders Step 4: Give a substantial report on how the following MS Server 2012 services are made available to users. How is security implemented in the File server? (This should be the main bulk of the lab) · Creating folders on the server hard drive · The uses of users and groups · How access privileges are assigned · How external users can access files on the server Bonus Activity: Set up a printer on your server. Create a shared printer and print a document from your workstation to the server printer. Explain the process and the benefits of sharing a network printer. Show a screen capture of the print queue with your print job. Step 5: In the last lab you used Active Directory to create some users and groups. Now that you are working within a domain there is another tool that lets you create and manage Group Policy Objects (GPO). To explore this tool navigate to the GROUP POLICY MANAGEMENT (GPM) tool within the Administrative Tools. Acquaint yourself with the GPM console and read the following 3 papers at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753298.aspx . · Getting started with GPMC · Edit, Filter, and Comment Policy settings · Control the Scope of Group Policy Objects Show me that you have created and configured an appropriate
  • 5. object for your network and write me a summary report on the purpose and possible uses of GPO’s. Conclusion I will be looking for your opinions and insights on how the MS Server 2012 can be used in an organization. What did you think was slick and what was clumsy? Any Aha’s along the way? What did you learn in the lab? How do you think you could use what you learned in the lab?
