Overview
Firms are growing at a dizzying pace just to handle the increased workload being
placed on them. Additionally, their people are continually being asked to wear multiple
hats – technical expert, business development specialist, and manager among others.
While having more work is a good problem to have, rapid firm growth causes other
organizational issues. As a result of the industry’s growth, people are being promoted to
handle new roles and responsibilities. Many of these individuals haven’t yet fully
developed their leadership skills and the vast majority of organizations don’t have a
formal plan for preparing them for their new role.
In response to this all-to-common challenge, we have developed the Emerging Leaders
Academy. The Emerging Leaders Academy is a highly engaging and interactive
workshop series geared for young and/or recently promoted managers (generally 3-5
years). The series provides the knowledge and skills required for this critical audience to
become effective leaders in your organization.
The curriculum encompasses the following 12 courses, one delivered each month at
your location. We strongly recommend rolling it out this way to help maximize retention
and uptake as each workshop is highly thought provoking and is geared towards
application on the job.
To strategically reinforce the learning, the series includes quarterly roundtable sessions
where participants share examples of how they’ve applied their “Leadership Learnings”
to real-world work situations. Coaching and feedback is provided to participants at
each roundtable session.

1. Promoted? Now What? From Managing Yourself to Leading Others
§ Identify the characteristics that define a leader
§ Discuss the role of a leader compared to the role of a “doer”
§ Time Management Essentials
§ Mindful Delegation (note: This is a shortened version of Workshop 2)
§ Effective Coaching and Feedback strategies (note: This is a shortened version of
Workshop 3)
2. Mindful Delegation
§ Identify the key questions to think through when delegating a task (Skill/Will/Learning)
§ Apply the right mode of management when supporting the individual in getting a
delegated task completed (Active/Coaching/Deputizing)
§ Practice delegation discussions using different modes of management
§ Discuss the role of motivation in delegation
§ Managing compliance issues
3. Effective Coaching and Feedback Strategies
§ Describe what motivates people (intrinsic/extrinsic)
§ Define your role in motivating others (reasons, barriers, examples of effective and
poorly delivered FB)
§ Delivering frequent and consistent feedback in a high performance culture
§ List the steps for providing meaningful recognition and constructive feedback
(Situation, Observation, Impact)
§ Discuss ways to ask for constructive feedback
§ Practice preparing for and conducting feedback conversations
4. Performance Reviews
(Note: it’s highly recommended this workshop be conducted along with Effective Coaching
& Feedback Strategies)
§ Elements of effective performance reviews
§ Preparing for a performance review
§ Conducting a performance review
§ Follow up strategies for successful implementation
5. Dealing with Difficult Client Situations
§ Describe the steps required to successfully address difficult client situations
§ Determining a customer’s value to the firm

colleagues for further investigation and pursuit

§ Defining what we mean by ethics (hint – it’s ambiguous)

§ Dealing with unethical behavior in the workplace
