Shortly after, she suffered a tragic experience when she moved in with her mother at six. Her mother was a housemaid and was often absent which
allowed for Oprah to be molested from the age of nine to thirteen. After escaping the abuse, she began living alone and soon became pregnant.
Devastatingly her child died in infancy and she traveled to Nashville and moved in with her father. Her father, Vernon gave Oprah a structured home
life and she began flourishing in school. During this time she started speaking in a variety of churches located in Tennessee. Her multiple years of
experience in front of large crowds would later guarantee a job in the talk show business. Along with speaking in front of churches Oprah took speech

In college, Winfrey became the first female co–anchor in Nashville when she applied for a job at WTVF–TV Nashville CBS affiliate. Quickly after she
started, she became quite popular with her large audience and was offered a job in Baltimore, Maryland. However, shortly after arriving in Baltimore,
Oprah soon discovered that she was not only to young for prime time television, but also that she strongly disliked hard news. She then took a different
approach and became the co–host of the talk show People are Talking. Show ratings skyrocketed and Oprah realized that talk show television was her
dream. Later she moved to Chicago, Illinois and hosted the television show A.M. Chicago. The only problem was that only a small margin of people in
the Chicago media were African American. Despite previous inequality, Oprah was able to double the shows ratings due to her strong connection with
the audience that derived from her traumatic

The goal was to make a record–breaking salary such as Barbara Walters with her one million dollars a year. Oprah approached her new job with
typical gusto. But WJZ's management frowned on Oprah's habit of spontaneous reporting and her refusal to read the news copy ahead of time.
The lack of preparation resulted in mistakes. She would mispronounce words and bad grammar. Things did not work out there so the company
decided to send Oprah to get a makeover. She was sent to a salon in New York and received a perm that made her hair come out. She was also sent to a

The Oprah Winfrey Show is highly influential, especially to women because it allows them a forum to talk about numerous topics that are relevant of
example, abuse, molestation and teenage pregnancy on a high rate and others. Winfrey has interviewed political and public figures during the past
twenty years. In earlier times during the show, rather than offering a simple publicity platform, a celebrity would often be featured after a period of
intense media scrutiny. She often interviews celebrities on issues that directly involved them in some way, such as cancer or charity work.
She has risen from a poor background and was ranked the richest African American of the 20th Century, the greatest black philanthropist in American
history and was once the world's only black billionaire. She is also known as the most influential woman in the world, both older generations and young.
"The Angels Network" started in 1998, is a charity founded by Oprah. This network is aimed at encouraging people around the world to make a
difference in the lives of underprivileged families. They work in the area to help make society better and work towards a better life for all. Since the

leader or have a great talent. Oprah Winfrey is considered a role model to many individuals because of her tough childhood, wonderful charity work,
her schools, and the true relationships with her fans. Oprah stands out among many people on her ability to feel others' pain and help those people get

Although Oprah does use a portion of her wealth to support her lavish lifestyle, a large majority of the money she earns goes directly to several
organizations whose goals include improving housing conditions, providing education, sanitizing water, and several other necessities that not

donations are given directly to one of many projects, one being The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. This project,

This change meant relocating to Baltimore, and taking Oprah out of the only true home she had known. Again Oprah endured separation, but this time
her transition was not smooth. Once there, an older cousin sexually molested Oprah, and then she suffered repeated molestation by others throughout
her youth. Oprah then turned to a life on the streets. She was pregnant by the age of fourteen; she miscarried and was left feeling distraught. At the age
of fifteen, Vernita sent
Oprah to Nashville, Tennessee to live with her father. It was here that the life of Oprah took a major turn. Vernon put rules into place, something that
Oprah had not seen since living with Vernita. Vernon encouraged Oprah to focus on life and to begin to concentrate on her education. Vernon

entertainment. (We cannot forget that Freud faced the same controversy in his day.) While I may not change anyone's opinion, I can define her

CHILDHOOD
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born February 1, 1954, out of wedlock, and into an impoverished farm family in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her parents met
on a one day fling in Kosciusko while her father, Vernon Winfrey, was home for the summer in the armed services. Her father and mother never
repeated their union after that first time. Vernon didn't even know that Vernita was pregnant. He received word of Oprah's birth while in Alabama
when Vernita sent a birth announcement with a note that read "Send Clothes!" (King 30). After the birth of her daughter, Vernita Lee, age 18, was
eager to split the farm and head north to Milwaukee, where there was more work and more money to be made. There was no place for a small baby
in the big city so the responsibility fell to Vernon Winfrey's mother.
Life with Grandmother was not particularly an easy one for young Oprah.

In college, Winfrey became the first female co–anchor in Nashville when she applied for a job at WTVF–TV Nashville CBS affiliate. Quickly after she started, she became quite popular with her large audience and was offered a job in Baltimore, Maryland. However, shortly after arriving in Baltimore, Oprah soon discovered that she was not only to young for prime time television, but also that she strongly disliked hard news. The goal was to make a record–breaking salary such as Barbara Walters with her one million dollars a year. Oprah approached her new job with typical gusto. But WJZ's management frowned on Oprah's habit of spontaneous reporting and her refusal to read the news copy ahead of time. The lack of preparation resulted in mistakes. She would mispronounce words and bad grammar. Things did not work out there so the company decided to send Oprah to get a makeover. She was sent to a salon in New York and received a perm that made her hair come out. She was also sent to a speech coach, it was there that she received the best advice of her life. The speech coach told Oprah that she had to have more self–determination and positive attitude and to quit being so nice. Oprah's next job was reading "cut–ins" on ABC's Good Morning America Show. In addition WJZ–TV assigned her as a reporter covering tragedies. After this Oprah was placed to host their talk show People Are Talking, to her this show was considered a demotion. People Are Talking created a change for Oprah. She realized this is what she wanted to do all along. It allowed her to relax and be herself. In a few years the shows popularity passed that of the Phil Donahue Show. In 1984, Oprah took a risk at hosting a Chicago morning talk show. Her father and mother never repeated their union after that first time. Vernon didn't even know that Vernita was pregnant. He received word of Oprah's birth while in Alabama when Vernita sent a birth announcement with a note that read "Send Clothes!" (King 30). After the birth of her daughter, Vernita Lee, age 18, was eager to split the farm and head north to Milwaukee, where there was more work and more money to be made. There was no place for a small baby in the big city so the responsibility fell to Vernon Winfrey's mother. Life with Grandmother was not particularly an easy one for young Oprah.
