The Hunger Games The Capitol
In The Hunger Games the Capitol is a place of vast wealth while the districts especially the districts of eleven and twelve are living in poverty. This
wealth that the Capitol has it a type of social control because it keeps the districts from being able to gain the ability to fight back against the Capitol
due to their poverty status. The poverty in the districts is so bad that Katniss Everdeen from District Twelve requires that she break a law of the
Capitol's, which is not leaving the fenced area. She does this in order to keep her and her family from starving to death. Katniss states, "Technically,
Gale and I could be whipped on a daily basis for poaching in the woods" (Collins 202–203). This poverty is also seen in District Eleven when Rue
says, "I've never had a whole leg to myself before" (202). Rue also talks about how they grow food but they are not allowed to eat it. (202) The
Capitol makes it illegal to go outside the Districts because it could lead to the Districts to banding together and creating another rebellion and it is a
means for Katniss to keep herself fed without relying on the Capitol to survive from starving to death. This is an issue of social control the Capitol is
deliberately keeping the Districts hunger to have ultimate power over them. They also have a system called a tesserae which allows the children who
are eligible for the reaping to get a "year's supply of grain and oil for one person" (13). They get his if they put their names in the

Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games – Essay By Lauren Wheeler Throughout the whole story of The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins' personal story plays a
major role in the events of the annual hunger games, and is a great influence on the personality and development of the two tributes from District 12
and their struggle to survive in the cruel, harsh arena. The story of the Hunger Games takes place in the destroyed nation of North America, which is
now Panem and contains twelve districts. These districts are ruled by the intimidating Capitol. The Hunger Games was created after the districts of
Panem had tried to rebel against the Capitol ultimately failing in the end. As punishment, each district would have to choose 2 tributes, one female and

The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food stash of the stronger tributes called Careers,
which have also teamed up together. After successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area where
Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue's death at the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to
run even further out into the woods hoping to find a way to survive. While she's running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes from the
same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of
the tributes could find him. Katniss helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the Careers. For the
next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol.
After Peeta is knocked out by medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a feast, but it is
actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the
cave. When she returns, Peeta is somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. Once they arrive, they see

Literary Criticism : ' The Hunger Games '

to be strong and independent or is that a job for men? Not every female character is vulnerable and needs saving by a strong male character.
Females containing strong and brave traits are not very welcomed in many different stories and are usually seen as a rebel. In today's modern day
literature, there are more novels with strong female characters, but are not very welcomed. Katniss Everdeen is an example of a strong female
protagonist, from the novel, "The Hunger Games". Katniss is not a stereotypical female in Panem, many say she is more masculine than really
feminine. When she is sent to the Capital for the games, she is transformed, more like forced, to look like their ideal female. Katniss Everdeen had a
choice to volunteer as tribute, but did not have a choice when it came to the way she looked. Katniss Everdeen in the novel "The Hunger Games", is
not the Capitols ideal female tribute because she is strong, independent, and a warrior with strive to survive. Katniss Everdeen is not a stereotypical
female character, she illegally hunts, climbs trees and is not worried about her appearance. To the Capitol these are not traits that many females poses
because women are seen as desirable, loveable and specifically feminine for females and masculine for males. Katniss Everdeen in particular has more
masculine traits, rather than

Identity and reality are both often skewed and/or compromised to meet the needs and wants of a person or platform. More often than not do people
and markets put on fronts to be perceived in a certain way to gain favor in the public eye. They adapt because they have to in order to stay afloat in
the ever changing world of fleeting beauty and immediate gratification. The world of Panem in The Hunger Games is not much different, in fact, it's
more similar than not. In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Collins uses construction and manipulation of the authenticity of the
characters to show that identity evolves to fit the demands of the prevailing reality.
Much of the Hunger Games is centered around portraying a certain image, or identity if you will. The capital manipulates the weaknesses in their
society and in their people to create an identity of unity and nationalism through the way they present the games to the districts of Panem. This idea of
appearing to be one thing but really being another is ingrained in the society of Panem. District 12, in particular, maintains this image of complacency
for the sake of survival, and Katniss is no exception to this.
To survive, Katniss practices stoicism where she manipulates her emotions to create the identity she needs. She has become accustom to this way of
living, camouflaging her actions and concealing her true emotions to protect not only herself but also the ones she loves (Prim in this instance). She is

Importance Of Hope In The Hunger Games
Hope is the Key to Survival The Hunger Games is a film about survival, and when survival seems impossible there is only one thing left to count on:
hope. When Katniss takes her sister's place in the murderous free–for–all known as the Hunger Games, her life changes, and not for the better.
Suddenly, Katniss finds herself in a world where killing is the only way to survive. Luckily, she has help along the way. A casual observer of the
film is likely to notice the presence of many mentors in Katniss' story, but that observation becomes more important when it is combined with the
importance and relevance of hope. The first mentor present in Katniss' life is her sister, Primrose. When Primrose gets reaped, Katniss steps in and
makes a sacrifice to save her sister. From that point on, Primrose becomes the driving force behind Katniss' will to survive. When Katniss says
goodbye to her family, Prim asks Katniss to try to win, and Katniss promises to try. Primrose has hope for Katniss' return. Primrose's faith in Katniss
is the main reason Katniss decides to fight for her life and, eventually, win. The next mentor in Katniss' life is Haymitch. At first, we think Haymitch
is useless, as he is always drunk, but, as soon as they get to the Capitol, he proves himself. Haymitch is constantly reminding Katniss to "Play the
Game" because he has hope that she will be able to appeal to the public and get sponsors, which will be the key to winning. Haymitch is the one who

Essay on Hunger Games
The Hunger Games The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has many characteristics of a dystopian society. Propaganda is used throughout the book
to control the citizens of society. The people of the twelve districts have their Information, independent thought, and freedom restricted. The type of
dystopian control present is corporate control. Propaganda is use to control the citizens of society. "The real message is clear, 'Look how we take
your children and sacrifice them and there's nothing you can do. If you lift a finger we will destroy ever last one of you. Just as we did in District

"Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve defeated the thirteenth obliterate" (Collins 18). The Capitol
used their power and technology they had to defeat the districts, soon after the Capitol created the Hunger Games in order to take control of the
districts and punish them for their rebellion. The dystopian protagonist that is present in the Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen. "Finally, I am
too restless to even stay in bed. I pace the floor, heart beating too fast, breathing too short. My room feels like a prison cell. I run down hall to the
door to the roof. The energy field enclosing the roof prevents any desperate form of escape" (Collins 148) Katniss is often struggling to escape or
feels like she's trap, she knows that she's a tribute in the hunger games and is afraid that she will never see her family again if she doesn't come out as
the victor. Through Katniss's perspective you can easily recognize that there is something wrong with the society that she lives in. " I want to do
something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of
every tribute they can't own" (Collins 237). Katniss knows that the Capitol is cruel and wrong for having the hunger games, forcing the tributes to kill

Oppression In The Hunger Games
For thousands of years, governments have been oppressing their people. Although their reasons for doing so may have been different, the outcomes
were all the same: a revolt of the people. There are many examples of this throughout history, such as in the French Revolution and the American
Revolution. The Hunger Games, a tale of a dystopian society filled with maltreatment by "The Capitol," displays the path to insurrection triggered by
the mounting cases of misery brought on by their government, that was attacking lower classes of people. By using common themes of oppression and
rebellion found throughout history, The Hunger Games is a striking example of how repression by government will eventually lead to a revolt of the
people.
One of the subtle ways a totalitarian government casts its shadow over its people is through class distinction. By making the privilege gap so vast
between The Capitol and the twelve districts, and being able to choose which districts will obtain the advantage not only during the Hunger Games,
but in everyday life, The Capitol discreetly displays its control over the people. For example, Districts 1–3 have far more resources, sponsors, money,
and publicity than the other districts, thus giving them a higher chance in winning the Hunger Games, which is precisely what the government wants.
Conversely, District 12, Katniss' district, is a poverty–stricken mining community that seldom has enough assets to get them through the day. While

Essay on The Hunger Games: Fiction or Reality?
Fiction is "the act of feigning, inventing, or imagining", but in Suzanne Collin's book, The Hunger Games, fiction is merely a reflection of what is
already going on in the world today ("Fiction"). Could this fiction novel, The Hunger Games, really be America's future? Well, major themes in the
book such as inequality between rich and poor, suffering as entertainment, importance of appearance, and government control point toward the answer
being yes. Primarily, the major comparison between the novel and our world today is the theme of inequality between rich and poor. In The Hunger
Games, there is an immense gap between the rich and the poor. The rich living in the city's capitol, Panem, and the poor living in the twelve districts,

Similarly, American's are some of the wealthiest people in the world, but still some of the poorest. There is "nearly 49 million Americans, including
15.9 million children that struggle to put food on the table" ("US Hunger"). The families that are starving are often hard working families who can
simply just not make ends meet. Organizations like Feeding America have food banks that give out food to "over 1 million or more Americans each
week" ("Hunger in America"). Like the citizens in The Hunger Games, American's see these major problems, yet do not get up and try to be proactive.
Thus keeping this vicious cycle on repeat and letting it continue to worsen. Along with inequality, is the additional theme of other people's suffering as
entertainment. The games are all about fighting, suffering, and death. The more that tributes battle one another, more blood is spilt, thus making the
games more entertaining. Katniss specifically speaks about a certain year where half of the tributes died of the cold and she remarks, "It was
considered very anti–climactic in the Capitol, all those quiet, bloodless deaths" (39). The suffering is not just physical though, it is also emotional. For
example, Peeta and Katniss become star–crossed lovers, "meaning ill–fated", therefore catching the attention of the capital and its citizens ("The
Hunger Games"). The two star–crossed lovers are bound for a certain doom intensifying

Theme The book, The Hunger Games, has one main theme throughout. Suffering and brutality as a form of entertainment. In Panem, a tribute's
suffering, physically and mentally, is used and prolonged as a form of entertainment for the people, mostly for those who live in the Capitol. The mind
set is that the more the tributes suffer, especially while battling one another, the more entertaining it becomes. At one time Katniss discussed what made
the Games successful and what didn't. The successes all had in common that they made it so that the tributes did not die immediately which would
limit the entertainment factor. Towards the end of the book, Cato did not die a quick death as he could have, he remained alive. Once the muttations

Argumentative Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong
will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen,
as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. Collins displays the prodigious amount of persistence of Katniss Everdeen and
her comrade, Peeta Mellark, which allows them to survive throughout the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen lives a life that is based on her ability to
survive long before she becomes a participant in the Hunger Games. The death of Katniss's father left Katniss to provide for her mother and her sister,

Katniss and Peeta were able to kill Cato. Katniss and Peeta encountered Cato on the Cornucopia as they escaped from the muttations. "Cato has
made a beeline for the Cornucopia, and without question I follow him. If he thinks it's the safest place, who am I to argue? " (Collins 327).
Katniss shot an arrow in which Peeta was able to push Cato off of the Cornucopia even though Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in
Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each other,
however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as the victors of the Hunger Games. "We both know they
have to have a victor. Yes, they have to have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd have failed
the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were
both to die, or they thought we were..." (Collins 339). As they were both about to die they heard "the frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts
above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy–fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta

Reaction Paper On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is one of three adventure novels written by Suzanne Collins and it hit the big screen in 2012 when the first movie of the trilogy
was released on March 21, 2012. The movie clearly shows that the totalitarian nation of Panem was originally divided into 13 districts but 13th district
was destroyed by the Capitol because they believe that the district 13 is being the driving force of the rebellion against their rules. The Capitol of
Panem is the only major city mentioned in the trilogy and it is under the tyrannical dictatorship led by President Snow and it controls the whole Panem.
The Capitol enforces inhumane rules that scarred the district people of Panem for generations because they have an annual event which is called the

also the randomly picked boy to accompany Katniss. This is where it got me excited because the Hunger Games is a one of a kind event where the
two tributes from each district will fight other tributes to survive and be able to come out alive. The game is quite complex because the tributes
will never know what will happen to them and how will they survive. The tributes from the same district will help one another in order to kill other
tributes. It is a strategical game, you should know how to attack, when to attack your enemies. For me, it is one example of how unfair life is. The
Hunger Games is one of the movie that got me thinking that the government is really similar to the Capitol. They broadcast the game live for others
to see. If your family member was picked and you will see them get killed live without you

How To Write An Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is a dystopian trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September, 2008 and the story takes place in
Panem, a nation formed from a post–apocalyptic North America.
In a world of limited resources, the despotic government run by the wealthy Capitol maintains its citizens in line by separating them by districts and
reinforcing severe class separations. The annual televised event known as the Hunger Games, created 74 years ago as a punishment for the rebellion
led by the extinct 13Вє district against the Capitol, is their strongest tool to promote disunion and to discourage insubordination. Every year, 24
children from the 12 remaining districts, one male and one female ranging from 12 to 18 years old, are chosen at the annual Reaping ceremonies to
serve as tributes and represent their districts in the games.

It is much more brutal, violent and bloody than "Hunger Games". One of the strongest points of the novel is that it explores what makes regular kids
descend into madness, while others withhold their wits. It is an exceptional entertainment for people with a tolerance for high amounts of violence yet
also a remarkable study of the psychology of extreme fear, with a few insights about totalitarianism as well.
Resemblance between these two books are evident. They both exploit the same premise of teenagers forced to participate in a deadly game where
only one person wins and lives. However, these books are completely different at the same time. While the "Hunger Games" is a personal story of
survival from the point of view of just one player, "Battle Royale" is a complex story which follows all participants of the game, throwing you into the
head of a personage and giving you their full–lenght mental landscape for one or two

The film The Hunger Games Essay
The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy, has become a source of entertainment and intrigue
among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense obsession
for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival,
it is much more than that. As most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological patterns and themes. If
one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and

Although this could be seen as a result of the context in which these characters find themselves, this proclamation by Katniss sheds light on the
possibility that she thinks there could be more to life than just having kids. However, this statement could also be enforcing social norms. Katniss,
who is presumably supposed to want kids as a woman in this story's society, might be stating that, although she wants to have kids, cannot do so.
This could be a result of the fact that she does not feel that she could properly care for them, or that her world in which she lives is not fit to be the
home of her potential offspring. Another instance in which Katniss's character challenges gender roles is when Katniss finds the wounded, suffering
Peeta and saves his life. This goes against the typical concept of a male being the stronger, more protective of the two sexes. When Peeta suggests that
Katniss needs to look out for herself, Katniss utterly dismisses the thought: "No, I'm not gonna leave you. I'm not gonna do that." Instead of Peeta
riding in on a horse in shining knight's armor, he is portrayed to be weak and vulnerable, dependent on Katniss's cunning and skill to save him. Within
this situation, female gender roles are also enforced. Along with coming to Peeta's rescue, Katniss

Thematic Essay On The Hunger Games
Hunger Games– Thematic Analysis
The Hunger Games is a 2008 top selling science fiction novel by the American writer Suzanne Collins. Set in the dystopian, post–apocalyptic nation of
Panem, Suzanna Collins deals with many issues that each play vital roles in the novel, such as the inequality between the rich and poor and the
importance of appearances.
The inequality between the rich and poor is an integral theme highlighted by Suzanne Collins in the Hunger Games series. In Panem, wealth and
power are dominated by those living in the Capitol, and, as a result, there is a substantial imbalance between the lives of the affluent and that of the
poor. This disparity is between the lives of the rich and poor is apparent in countless aspects of their lifestyles, but undoubtedly the most notable isfood.
In the less wealthy districts, food is a luxury and extremely scarce, consequently, most...show more content...
In numerous crucial moments of the book, Collins hints that physical appearance and behaviour is crucial Katniss' survival in the games. Throughout
the novel, Katniss uses her physical appearance and her actions to manipulate how other citizens viewed her. For instance, during the reaping
ceremony (the place where the candidates of each district were picked for the 'games'), Katniss doesn't allow herself to cry in front of the camera
because she doesn't want to appear weak and incapable (thus a much easier target). Furthermore, at the opening ceremony of the 'games', Collins places
a lot of emphasis on Katniss ornate dress and ostentatious appearance, showing readers the significance physical appearance. Standing out from the rest
and hence trading attention has proved to be much more than just an egotistic attempt to gain recognition. Popular tributes are able to attract sponsors
who could provide items to those candidates during the games which prove to be vital to their

Hunger Games Survival Analysis
The Hunger Games is one of the most popular young adult book series of all time, and it is for good reason too. When Katniss Everdeen, the main
protagonist sacrifices her own safety to protect her little sister Prim, her whole life changes for the worst. This change has forced her to do one
singular thing: survive. Survival is a key theme of The Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen survives and fights for three main things in The Hunger
Games: for herself, for her family, and for others. Katniss fights for herself because she has many perils and experiences in surviving through the
Hunger Games, and even before the actual Games by winning over sponsors to send her some gifts inside of the arena. She fights for family by
sacrificing herself to save her sister when her sister is chosen at the Reaping, Katniss sacrifices her own safety by volunteering to participate for
the Hunger Games. She also fights for others by trying to protect Rue, a nimble twelve year old girl who helps Katniss attack the Careers in the
actual Hunger Games, and her district partner and love interest Peeta Mellark. Surviving is one of her first instincts in life, especially seeing that she
is an amazing bow hunter who feeds her family daily, so being in the Hunger Games puts her at a slight advantage, especially when she gets her
hands on the bow, but others have trained their whole lives for the Hunger Games, a group of kids who were trained at a young age for the Hunger

In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expresses two themes. The first one is that we can't let the government use their power to treat, and use
people like they want, they are oppressing them. "At one o'clock, we head of the square. Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deaths door.
This evening, officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. If not you will be imprisoned." (Collins, 16) we can see that the Capitol
forces the people to participate in the reaping by threatening them. "When I was younger, I scared my mother to death, the things I would blurt out
about District 12, about the people who rule our country, Panem, from the far–off city called the Capitol. Eventually I understood this would only lead

was hard for all of them because Gale was outside seeing how Peeta kiss his girlfriend, and for Peeta because he knows that Katniss was in love
with another boy and not of him, and to Katniss because maybe she was with Gale, but passing time with Peeta and look how he tries to saved her
life make her get confused about her feelings so she focused in what is good for her, and not of what she real want.
The author communicates the important message by using some literary devices, for example she used verbal irony when Peeta say, "Always worried
about our safety." (Collins, 81) It was sarcastic because he was talking with Katniss about what happens if they try to suicide from the top of the

The Hunger Games deal with oppression by many ways. "It's time for the drawing. Effie Trinket says as she always does, "Ladies first!" and crosses to
the glass ball with the girls' names. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the ball, and pulls out a slip of paper." (Collins, 28) The government
oppresses the people of the Seam because they were condemned to play the Hunger Games every year to get some food to live. People suffer because

The book The Hunger Games, portrays a society where people are treated unfairly based on factors that they cannot control. The people are born
into one of 13 districts. There lives vary drastically based on where they are born. Someone born in the Capitol has a completely different life than
someone born in district 12. A person born in the Capitol lives a wealthy life and is always treated with respect. On the other hand someone born in
district 12 has a life of constant back breaking work. They live in poverty and struggle to survive.
In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be treated very unfairly based on where they are born.

Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as
they are comes with some benefits and some disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and weak
compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive
which is basically what the hunger games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper hand in the games.
Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class
system set up by the Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born.
The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the
concept of the hunger games came to her. She was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the game
and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to the hunger games. She published the book in 2008
which was a time when reality shows, like Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a lot of
the same themes arise.

Power In The Hunger Games Essay
Power can easily be used for negative purposes, however is difficult to utilize it in a positive nature. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games explores
re–humanization to resist the capitol's negative power. Negative power is being explored in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut to control the
public's abilities. Positive power is having the courage to resist something that oppresses. Doing something positive with power is hard, doing
something negative with power is easy.
In Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games the resistance is taking the form of re–humanising the people of Panem. The dehumanisation of the Panem over

With the courage to replacing her sister in a public execution, Katniss gives people the power to take back their lives. The motif of appearance in 'I

of imagery throughout the ceremony mirrors how displays and appearances are a key power to overthrow the capitol. Appearance is how she

openly oppressed by the government that he now despises the government and wants to rid the world of what they have done, not only to him, but the

The Hunger Games The Capitol

  • 1. The Hunger Games The Capitol In The Hunger Games the Capitol is a place of vast wealth while the districts especially the districts of eleven and twelve are living in poverty. This wealth that the Capitol has it a type of social control because it keeps the districts from being able to gain the ability to fight back against the Capitol due to their poverty status. The poverty in the districts is so bad that Katniss Everdeen from District Twelve requires that she break a law of the Capitol's, which is not leaving the fenced area. She does this in order to keep her and her family from starving to death. Katniss states, "Technically, Gale and I could be whipped on a daily basis for poaching in the woods" (Collins 202–203). This poverty is also seen in District Eleven when Rue says, "I've never had a whole leg to myself before" (202). Rue also talks about how they grow food but they are not allowed to eat it. (202) The Capitol makes it illegal to go outside the Districts because it could lead to the Districts to banding together and creating another rebellion and it is a means for Katniss to keep herself fed without relying on the Capitol to survive from starving to death. This is an issue of social control the Capitol is deliberately keeping the Districts hunger to have ultimate power over them. They also have a system called a tesserae which allows the children who are eligible for the reaping to get a "year's supply of grain and oil for one person" (13). They get his if they put their names in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games – Essay By Lauren Wheeler Throughout the whole story of The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins' personal story plays a major role in the events of the annual hunger games, and is a great influence on the personality and development of the two tributes from District 12 and their struggle to survive in the cruel, harsh arena. The story of the Hunger Games takes place in the destroyed nation of North America, which is now Panem and contains twelve districts. These districts are ruled by the intimidating Capitol. The Hunger Games was created after the districts of Panem had tried to rebel against the Capitol ultimately failing in the end. As punishment, each district would have to choose 2 tributes, one female and ...show more content... The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food stash of the stronger tributes called Careers, which have also teamed up together. After successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area where Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue's death at the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to run even further out into the woods hoping to find a way to survive. While she's running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes from the same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of the tributes could find him. Katniss helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the Careers. For the next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol. After Peeta is knocked out by medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a feast, but it is actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the cave. When she returns, Peeta is somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. Once they arrive, they see Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Literary Criticism : ' The Hunger Games ' Yvette Escobedo 26 May 2016 English 102 #0304 Literary Criticism Research Paper Word Count: Survival through Gender Is it wrong for women to be strong and independent or is that a job for men? Not every female character is vulnerable and needs saving by a strong male character. Females containing strong and brave traits are not very welcomed in many different stories and are usually seen as a rebel. In today's modern day literature, there are more novels with strong female characters, but are not very welcomed. Katniss Everdeen is an example of a strong female protagonist, from the novel, "The Hunger Games". Katniss is not a stereotypical female in Panem, many say she is more masculine than really feminine. When she is sent to the Capital for the games, she is transformed, more like forced, to look like their ideal female. Katniss Everdeen had a choice to volunteer as tribute, but did not have a choice when it came to the way she looked. Katniss Everdeen in the novel "The Hunger Games", is not the Capitols ideal female tribute because she is strong, independent, and a warrior with strive to survive. Katniss Everdeen is not a stereotypical female character, she illegally hunts, climbs trees and is not worried about her appearance. To the Capitol these are not traits that many females poses because women are seen as desirable, loveable and specifically feminine for females and masculine for males. Katniss Everdeen in particular has more masculine traits, rather than Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Identity and reality are both often skewed and/or compromised to meet the needs and wants of a person or platform. More often than not do people and markets put on fronts to be perceived in a certain way to gain favor in the public eye. They adapt because they have to in order to stay afloat in the ever changing world of fleeting beauty and immediate gratification. The world of Panem in The Hunger Games is not much different, in fact, it's more similar than not. In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Collins uses construction and manipulation of the authenticity of the characters to show that identity evolves to fit the demands of the prevailing reality. Much of the Hunger Games is centered around portraying a certain image, or identity if you will. The capital manipulates the weaknesses in their society and in their people to create an identity of unity and nationalism through the way they present the games to the districts of Panem. This idea of appearing to be one thing but really being another is ingrained in the society of Panem. District 12, in particular, maintains this image of complacency for the sake of survival, and Katniss is no exception to this. To survive, Katniss practices stoicism where she manipulates her emotions to create the identity she needs. She has become accustom to this way of living, camouflaging her actions and concealing her true emotions to protect not only herself but also the ones she loves (Prim in this instance). She is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Importance Of Hope In The Hunger Games Hope is the Key to Survival The Hunger Games is a film about survival, and when survival seems impossible there is only one thing left to count on: hope. When Katniss takes her sister's place in the murderous free–for–all known as the Hunger Games, her life changes, and not for the better. Suddenly, Katniss finds herself in a world where killing is the only way to survive. Luckily, she has help along the way. A casual observer of the film is likely to notice the presence of many mentors in Katniss' story, but that observation becomes more important when it is combined with the importance and relevance of hope. The first mentor present in Katniss' life is her sister, Primrose. When Primrose gets reaped, Katniss steps in and makes a sacrifice to save her sister. From that point on, Primrose becomes the driving force behind Katniss' will to survive. When Katniss says goodbye to her family, Prim asks Katniss to try to win, and Katniss promises to try. Primrose has hope for Katniss' return. Primrose's faith in Katniss is the main reason Katniss decides to fight for her life and, eventually, win. The next mentor in Katniss' life is Haymitch. At first, we think Haymitch is useless, as he is always drunk, but, as soon as they get to the Capitol, he proves himself. Haymitch is constantly reminding Katniss to "Play the Game" because he has hope that she will be able to appeal to the public and get sponsors, which will be the key to winning. Haymitch is the one who lays out Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay on Hunger Games The Hunger Games The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has many characteristics of a dystopian society. Propaganda is used throughout the book to control the citizens of society. The people of the twelve districts have their Information, independent thought, and freedom restricted. The type of dystopian control present is corporate control. Propaganda is use to control the citizens of society. "The real message is clear, 'Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there's nothing you can do. If you lift a finger we will destroy ever last one of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen'" (Collins 19). This is the constant message the Capitol is telling the districts of what they can do, and this makes the citizens afraid of...show more content... "Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve defeated the thirteenth obliterate" (Collins 18). The Capitol used their power and technology they had to defeat the districts, soon after the Capitol created the Hunger Games in order to take control of the districts and punish them for their rebellion. The dystopian protagonist that is present in the Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen. "Finally, I am too restless to even stay in bed. I pace the floor, heart beating too fast, breathing too short. My room feels like a prison cell. I run down hall to the door to the roof. The energy field enclosing the roof prevents any desperate form of escape" (Collins 148) Katniss is often struggling to escape or feels like she's trap, she knows that she's a tribute in the hunger games and is afraid that she will never see her family again if she doesn't come out as the victor. Through Katniss's perspective you can easily recognize that there is something wrong with the society that she lives in. " I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can't own" (Collins 237). Katniss knows that the Capitol is cruel and wrong for having the hunger games, forcing the tributes to kill one another Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Oppression In The Hunger Games For thousands of years, governments have been oppressing their people. Although their reasons for doing so may have been different, the outcomes were all the same: a revolt of the people. There are many examples of this throughout history, such as in the French Revolution and the American Revolution. The Hunger Games, a tale of a dystopian society filled with maltreatment by "The Capitol," displays the path to insurrection triggered by the mounting cases of misery brought on by their government, that was attacking lower classes of people. By using common themes of oppression and rebellion found throughout history, The Hunger Games is a striking example of how repression by government will eventually lead to a revolt of the people. One of the subtle ways a totalitarian government casts its shadow over its people is through class distinction. By making the privilege gap so vast between The Capitol and the twelve districts, and being able to choose which districts will obtain the advantage not only during the Hunger Games, but in everyday life, The Capitol discreetly displays its control over the people. For example, Districts 1–3 have far more resources, sponsors, money, and publicity than the other districts, thus giving them a higher chance in winning the Hunger Games, which is precisely what the government wants. Conversely, District 12, Katniss' district, is a poverty–stricken mining community that seldom has enough assets to get them through the day. While Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay on The Hunger Games: Fiction or Reality? Fiction is "the act of feigning, inventing, or imagining", but in Suzanne Collin's book, The Hunger Games, fiction is merely a reflection of what is already going on in the world today ("Fiction"). Could this fiction novel, The Hunger Games, really be America's future? Well, major themes in the book such as inequality between rich and poor, suffering as entertainment, importance of appearance, and government control point toward the answer being yes. Primarily, the major comparison between the novel and our world today is the theme of inequality between rich and poor. In The Hunger Games, there is an immense gap between the rich and the poor. The rich living in the city's capitol, Panem, and the poor living in the twelve districts, ...show more content... Similarly, American's are some of the wealthiest people in the world, but still some of the poorest. There is "nearly 49 million Americans, including 15.9 million children that struggle to put food on the table" ("US Hunger"). The families that are starving are often hard working families who can simply just not make ends meet. Organizations like Feeding America have food banks that give out food to "over 1 million or more Americans each week" ("Hunger in America"). Like the citizens in The Hunger Games, American's see these major problems, yet do not get up and try to be proactive. Thus keeping this vicious cycle on repeat and letting it continue to worsen. Along with inequality, is the additional theme of other people's suffering as entertainment. The games are all about fighting, suffering, and death. The more that tributes battle one another, more blood is spilt, thus making the games more entertaining. Katniss specifically speaks about a certain year where half of the tributes died of the cold and she remarks, "It was considered very anti–climactic in the Capitol, all those quiet, bloodless deaths" (39). The suffering is not just physical though, it is also emotional. For example, Peeta and Katniss become star–crossed lovers, "meaning ill–fated", therefore catching the attention of the capital and its citizens ("The Hunger Games"). The two star–crossed lovers are bound for a certain doom intensifying Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Theme The book, The Hunger Games, has one main theme throughout. Suffering and brutality as a form of entertainment. In Panem, a tribute's suffering, physically and mentally, is used and prolonged as a form of entertainment for the people, mostly for those who live in the Capitol. The mind set is that the more the tributes suffer, especially while battling one another, the more entertaining it becomes. At one time Katniss discussed what made the Games successful and what didn't. The successes all had in common that they made it so that the tributes did not die immediately which would limit the entertainment factor. Towards the end of the book, Cato did not die a quick death as he could have, he remained alive. Once the muttations had surrounded Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Argumentative Essay On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. Collins displays the prodigious amount of persistence of Katniss Everdeen and her comrade, Peeta Mellark, which allows them to survive throughout the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen lives a life that is based on her ability to survive long before she becomes a participant in the Hunger Games. The death of Katniss's father left Katniss to provide for her mother and her sister, Prim....show more content... Katniss and Peeta were able to kill Cato. Katniss and Peeta encountered Cato on the Cornucopia as they escaped from the muttations. "Cato has made a beeline for the Cornucopia, and without question I follow him. If he thinks it's the safest place, who am I to argue? " (Collins 327). Katniss shot an arrow in which Peeta was able to push Cato off of the Cornucopia even though Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each other, however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as the victors of the Hunger Games. "We both know they have to have a victor. Yes, they have to have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd have failed the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were both to die, or they thought we were..." (Collins 339). As they were both about to die they heard "the frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy–fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you – the tributes of District Twelve!" (Collins 340). • 11. Reaction Paper On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games is one of three adventure novels written by Suzanne Collins and it hit the big screen in 2012 when the first movie of the trilogy was released on March 21, 2012. The movie clearly shows that the totalitarian nation of Panem was originally divided into 13 districts but 13th district was destroyed by the Capitol because they believe that the district 13 is being the driving force of the rebellion against their rules. The Capitol of Panem is the only major city mentioned in the trilogy and it is under the tyrannical dictatorship led by President Snow and it controls the whole Panem. The Capitol enforces inhumane rules that scarred the district people of Panem for generations because they have an annual event which is called the Hunger...show more content... But Katniss did not want her younger sister to compete, she volunteered as a tribute and became the representative of district 12 in the 74th Hunger Games. Along with Katniss, Peeta Mellark is also the randomly picked boy to accompany Katniss. This is where it got me excited because the Hunger Games is a one of a kind event where the two tributes from each district will fight other tributes to survive and be able to come out alive. The game is quite complex because the tributes will never know what will happen to them and how will they survive. The tributes from the same district will help one another in order to kill other tributes. It is a strategical game, you should know how to attack, when to attack your enemies. For me, it is one example of how unfair life is. The Hunger Games is one of the movie that got me thinking that the government is really similar to the Capitol. They broadcast the game live for others to see. If your family member was picked and you will see them get killed live without you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. How To Write An Essay On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games is a dystopian trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September, 2008 and the story takes place in Panem, a nation formed from a post–apocalyptic North America. In a world of limited resources, the despotic government run by the wealthy Capitol maintains its citizens in line by separating them by districts and reinforcing severe class separations. The annual televised event known as the Hunger Games, created 74 years ago as a punishment for the rebellion led by the extinct 13Вє district against the Capitol, is their strongest tool to promote disunion and to discourage insubordination. Every year, 24 children from the 12 remaining districts, one male and one female ranging from 12 to 18 years old, are chosen at the annual Reaping ceremonies to serve as tributes and represent their districts in the games. Part entertainment, part brutal...show more content... It is much more brutal, violent and bloody than "Hunger Games". One of the strongest points of the novel is that it explores what makes regular kids descend into madness, while others withhold their wits. It is an exceptional entertainment for people with a tolerance for high amounts of violence yet also a remarkable study of the psychology of extreme fear, with a few insights about totalitarianism as well. Resemblance between these two books are evident. They both exploit the same premise of teenagers forced to participate in a deadly game where only one person wins and lives. However, these books are completely different at the same time. While the "Hunger Games" is a personal story of survival from the point of view of just one player, "Battle Royale" is a complex story which follows all participants of the game, throwing you into the head of a personage and giving you their full–lenght mental landscape for one or two Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. The film The Hunger Games Essay The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy, has become a source of entertainment and intrigue among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense obsession for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival, it is much more than that. As most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological patterns and themes. If one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and ...show more content... Although this could be seen as a result of the context in which these characters find themselves, this proclamation by Katniss sheds light on the possibility that she thinks there could be more to life than just having kids. However, this statement could also be enforcing social norms. Katniss, who is presumably supposed to want kids as a woman in this story's society, might be stating that, although she wants to have kids, cannot do so. This could be a result of the fact that she does not feel that she could properly care for them, or that her world in which she lives is not fit to be the home of her potential offspring. Another instance in which Katniss's character challenges gender roles is when Katniss finds the wounded, suffering Peeta and saves his life. This goes against the typical concept of a male being the stronger, more protective of the two sexes. When Peeta suggests that Katniss needs to look out for herself, Katniss utterly dismisses the thought: "No, I'm not gonna leave you. I'm not gonna do that." Instead of Peeta riding in on a horse in shining knight's armor, he is portrayed to be weak and vulnerable, dependent on Katniss's cunning and skill to save him. Within this situation, female gender roles are also enforced. Along with coming to Peeta's rescue, Katniss Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Thematic Essay On The Hunger Games Hunger Games– Thematic Analysis The Hunger Games is a 2008 top selling science fiction novel by the American writer Suzanne Collins. Set in the dystopian, post–apocalyptic nation of Panem, Suzanna Collins deals with many issues that each play vital roles in the novel, such as the inequality between the rich and poor and the importance of appearances. The inequality between the rich and poor is an integral theme highlighted by Suzanne Collins in the Hunger Games series. In Panem, wealth and power are dominated by those living in the Capitol, and, as a result, there is a substantial imbalance between the lives of the affluent and that of the poor. This disparity is between the lives of the rich and poor is apparent in countless aspects of their lifestyles, but undoubtedly the most notable isfood. In numerous crucial moments of the book, Collins hints that physical appearance and behaviour is crucial Katniss' survival in the games. Throughout the novel, Katniss uses her physical appearance and her actions to manipulate how other citizens viewed her. For instance, during the reaping ceremony (the place where the candidates of each district were picked for the 'games'), Katniss doesn't allow herself to cry in front of the camera because she doesn't want to appear weak and incapable (thus a much easier target). Furthermore, at the opening ceremony of the 'games', Collins places a lot of emphasis on Katniss ornate dress and ostentatious appearance, showing readers the significance physical appearance. • 15. Hunger Games Survival Analysis The Hunger Games is one of the most popular young adult book series of all time, and it is for good reason too. When Katniss Everdeen, the main protagonist sacrifices her own safety to protect her little sister Prim, her whole life changes for the worst. This change has forced her to do one singular thing: survive. Survival is a key theme of The Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen survives and fights for three main things in The Hunger Games: for herself, for her family, and for others. Katniss fights for herself because she has many perils and experiences in surviving through the Hunger Games, and even before the actual Games by winning over sponsors to send her some gifts inside of the arena. She fights for family by sacrificing herself to save her sister when her sister is chosen at the Reaping, Katniss sacrifices her own safety by volunteering to participate for the Hunger Games. She also fights for others by trying to protect Rue, a nimble twelve year old girl who helps Katniss attack the Careers in the actual Hunger Games, and her district partner and love interest Peeta Mellark. Surviving is one of her first instincts in life, especially seeing that she is an amazing bow hunter who feeds her family daily, so being in the Hunger Games puts her at a slight advantage, especially when she gets her hands on the bow, but others have trained their whole lives for the Hunger Games, a group of kids who were trained at a young age for the Hunger Games called the Careers. • 16. The Hunger Games Research Essay In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expresses two themes. The first one is that we can't let the government use their power to treat, and use people like they want, they are oppressing them. "At one o'clock, we head of the square. Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deaths door. This evening, officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. If not you will be imprisoned." (Collins, 16) we can see that the Capitol forces the people to participate in the reaping by threatening them. "When I was younger, I scared my mother to death, the things I would blurt out about District 12, about the people who rule our country, Panem, from the far–off city called the Capitol. Eventually I understood this would only lead us to...show more content... During the game Katniss have to pretend that she loves Peeta, but inside she knows that her real love was Gale and that he was waiting for her. It was hard for all of them because Gale was outside seeing how Peeta kiss his girlfriend, and for Peeta because he knows that Katniss was in love with another boy and not of him, and to Katniss because maybe she was with Gale, but passing time with Peeta and look how he tries to saved her life make her get confused about her feelings so she focused in what is good for her, and not of what she real want. The author communicates the important message by using some literary devices, for example she used verbal irony when Peeta say, "Always worried about our safety." (Collins, 81) It was sarcastic because he was talking with Katniss about what happens if they try to suicide from the top of the building, but they can't because the Capitol want them to be alive for the game. The Hunger Games deal with oppression by many ways. "It's time for the drawing. Effie Trinket says as she always does, "Ladies first!" and crosses to the glass ball with the girls' names. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the ball, and pulls out a slip of paper." (Collins, 28) The government oppresses the people of the Seam because they were condemned to play the Hunger Games every year to get some food to live. • 18. The Hunger Games Essay The book The Hunger Games, portrays a society where people are treated unfairly based on factors that they cannot control. The people are born into one of 13 districts. There lives vary drastically based on where they are born. Someone born in the Capitol has a completely different life than someone born in district 12. A person born in the Capitol lives a wealthy life and is always treated with respect. On the other hand someone born in district 12 has a life of constant back breaking work. They live in poverty and struggle to survive. In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be treated very unfairly based on where they are born. The majority of the plot is based around the fact that...show more content... Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as they are comes with some benefits and some disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and weak compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive which is basically what the hunger games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper hand in the games. Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class system set up by the Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born. The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the concept of the hunger games came to her. She was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the game and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to the hunger games. She published the book in 2008 which was a time when reality shows, like Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a lot of the same themes arise. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Power In The Hunger Games Essay Power can easily be used for negative purposes, however is difficult to utilize it in a positive nature. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games explores re–humanization to resist the capitol's negative power. Negative power is being explored in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut to control the public's abilities. Positive power is having the courage to resist something that oppresses. Doing something positive with power is hard, doing something negative with power is easy. In Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games the resistance is taking the form of re–humanising the people of Panem. The dehumanisation of the Panem over 74 years has been a direct result of negative power. The emotive language used in "twelve to eighteen year olds are herded into roped...show more content... The motif of appearance in 'I want the audience to recognize you when you're in the arena,' displays how Cinna recognises how important appearances are in the Capitol. The use of imagery throughout the ceremony mirrors how displays and appearances are a key power to overthrow the capitol. Appearance is how she survived, and how she, with others help, overthrows President Snow. T.E.E. As Harrison Bergeron attempts to overthrow the government alone he delivers the people of the theatre the power to revive their lost individuality. Emotive language performed in 'Harrison stripped them of their handicaps' is used to show the audience how Harrison wants a society where people aren't handicapped. This is a result of him being so severely and openly oppressed by the government that he now despises the government and wants to rid the world of what they have done, not only to him, but the the society too. The metaphor of gravity in 'neutraling gravity with love and pure will' is depicting how the government is gravity holding the handicapped people down, and removing the handicaps will allow the people to neutralize gravity.
