This document discusses different techniques for reading comprehension including prediction, anticipation, inference, skimming, scanning, and reference. Prediction involves expecting what will come next based on background knowledge. Anticipation means continuously guessing what will follow while reading. Inference allows guessing meanings of words from context clues. Skimming provides a general idea by focusing on key parts, while scanning finds specific details. Reference notes words that refer to other previously or upcoming mentioned words.

Before we read a passage, we expect to find
certain things. Our anticipation is related to our
own personal background knowledge on the
subject.

When we are reading we are continuously
asking what will come next in the passage and
as we continue reading we find, through clues,
these predictions are either right or wrong.

When you are reading you may guess:
- The meaning of a word.
- You may see what is implied.
- You may infer from the context, from the
position of the word in the sentence, or from
the words beside
- The unknown word.

Skimming
We go through the passage in order to get a general idea of
what it is about, looking at the important parts: the beginning,
the end, the titles and the 1stsentence of each paragraph.
- All the passage.
- No dictionary.
- No back.
- No stop.
- No jump.
When you finish skimming you must get: Topic and
Main idea.

You go through the passage quickly, in order to
find:
- Specific information, a date, a figure, a name.
- Pieces of the passage
- Dictionary
- Go back
- Stop
- Jump

When you are reading you may find some words
or phrases(personal pronouns, demonstratives
pronouns),which refer to other words or phrases
that has already been mentioned or are going to
be mentioned.
