MODELS
Elements of Communication
Review
Participants
the sender and the receiver
Message
the main point of having
communication
Feedback
the response of the receiver
Context
the interrelated conditions
that affect the message
Channel
the means of delivering the
message
 presents communication as a
one-way activity in which
information flows from the
sender to the receiver
 shows only a passive receiver
LINEAR MODEL
Essential Question
 shows communication as a two-way
activity
 The sender and the receiver have the
same role in the activity: either one
comes up with an idea, sends a
message, and reacts to it.
 involves feedback
 may also include noise, an element that
affects the interpretation of the
message
Interactive Model
Essential Question
 presents communication as a
simultaneous activity
 senders and receivers - capable of
both sending and receiving
messages anytime or at the same
time
 feedback - includes nonverbal cues
such as gestures, tone of voice, or
body language
TRANSACTIONAL Model
Essential Question
 the first and earliest model by
Aristotle, who was a teacher of
Rhetoric and even put up an
academy to produce good speakers
 although focused on the Speaker
and the Message, the most
important part in his model is the
Setting where the Listener is
situated.
ARISTOTLE’S Model
Essential Question
 developed by Claude Shannon &
Warren Weaver
 Also known as Telephone Model
 assert that Message sent by the Source
(Speaker) is not necessarily the
Message received by the Destination
(Listener).
 This is due to the intervention of noise
or anything that hampers the
communication.
Shannon-Weaver Model
Essential Question
 develop by Wilbur Schramm, the
Father of Mass Communication
 explains why communication
breakdown occurs
 asserts that communication can take
place if and only if there is an overlap
between the Field of Experience of the
speaker and listener
schramm Model
Essential Question
 tells us that communication is circular
and continuous, without a beginning
or end
 the speaker can only receive feedback
if the speaker is monitoring the listener
 the speaker will know what the
listener's response is only if he or she is
paying attention
Eugene-white’s Model
Essential Question
Objectives
Let’s
Begin The following statements are about the
elements and models of communication.
Choose Green Light if the statement is true;
otherwise, choose Red Light.
Choose wisely so that you will
not be eliminated.
Players are you ready?
Red Light , Green Light
18
Let’s
Begin
Feedback is depended on the
receiver, as the receiver may choose
to give or withhold feedback.
19
Let’s
Begin
The Schramm Model presents
communication as a one-way activity.
20
Let’s
Begin
Technically, the receiver encodes the
message to formulate a response.
21
Let’s
Begin
In transactional model, the
participants are regarded as the
sender and receiver at the same time.
22
Let’s
Begin
Setting is the most important part in
Aristotle’s model of communication.
