2. The recovery stage
• In 1713 the new Bourbon King Philip V came to rule and
retained the Spanish overseas empire.
• In 1720 King Philip granted the British the right to slave
trading in Spanish America.
• In 1734 Spanish forces retook Naples and Sicily from the
Austrians in the War of the Polish Succession.
3. Growth
• In the 1740’s rapid shipping growth began reflecting in Philip
V’s success in bringing trade under control.
• 1756-1763 was the Seven Years War which was considered
the first World War which resulted in 1,400,000 deaths.
• Because of the loosening of trade after the Seven Years War,
shipping trade began to expand within the empire which grew
to an extraordinary rate in the 1780’s.
