Fire Tube Boiler Parts
Super heater – The saturated steam goes through the super heater to increase the thermal
efficiency of the cycle. A reason for this is also to make sure that the steam will be unlikely to
condense in the turbine during expansion which can cause corrosion and eventually damage the
blades and the engine.
Economizer – The economizer is the device used to capture the waste heat from the flue gases
and use it to heat the steam or water to increase the performance and energy of the cycle. When
the water and steam is heated by the economizer, it will take less energy for it to be superheated.
In some fire tube boilers, these are added as external inputs to retrieve waste heat. There are also
some fire tube boilers with internal economizers (Roslyakov, 2017)
Downcomer and Riser – These tubes are responsible for supplying the heat to the water. For this
application, the heat will be forced over the tubes since it is fire tube boiler (Ganapathy, 1992)
Furnace or Combustion chamber – This is where the fuel, air and hot gasses circulate and
provide heat to the tubes for the boiling of the water. The fuel is coal but not just any coal, it has
to be boiler – grade coal for the best heat capacity and steam production.
2. Water Tube Boiler
Superheater – Same as the fire tube boiler, the superheater prevents the possibility of the steam
condensing when expanding in the turbine and it also increases efficiency and performance
Economizer – The economizer for the water tube boiler also collects the waste heat in the system
and it helps heat the fluid of the boiler which will in turn, only require less energy to heat up to
superheated level.
Evaporator – This will allow the water to evaporate and absorb the energy surrounding it. This
will cycle to the super heater to be dry steam for better engine output or performance
Downcomer and Riser – These are responsible for supplying the water to the water panel header
from the boiler steam and water drum. The steam will enter through the economizer first then go
through the drum and proceed to the super heater.
Furnace – The furnace is responsible for heating the water tubes and turning it into steam, the fuel
is boiler – grade coal and is also supplied by air for good oxidation. The heat from the flue gases
are absorbed by the economizer and is taken to the tubes. The flue gases exit via the flue gas
chimney or exit.
Maintenance of Water Tube Boiler
For shift maintenance, the boiler blowdown valves must be opened to release some water or solids
accumulation in some parts of the boiler or drums
Daily maintenance will include checking the burner operation, air, steam and water pressure,
appearance of the boiler, and cleaning of the area.
Monthly maintenance will include the maintenance of the refractory if required (scheduled) to
have preventive maintenance, safety and performance checks.
Annual maintenance will be optimally done if a representative from the manufacturers would come
and check all heated and heating sides of the boiler, the valves would be drained and cleaned to
prevent clogs and fouling matter.
